🌸 White flowers with an enchanting fragrance • 🌿 Evergreen foliage • ☀️ Soft sun to partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to −15 °C • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
Lonicera japonica 'Halliana' is an evergreen climbing honeysuckle native to Japan, famous for its white flowers turning creamy yellow after 48 hours and its sweet, captivating scent. Flowering from June to September, it attracts bees and butterflies throughout the summer and gracefully wraps around trellises, railings, and balconies.
Hardy down to −15 °C, its foliage remains green for most of the winter — one of the most resilient and fragrant climbers in the catalog.
Which variety of Honeysuckle to choose?
The Lonicera genus offers species with very different characteristics. Here is how Lonicera japonica 'Halliana' stands out from other varieties in the catalog:
- Lonicera japonica 'Halliana' (this plant) — very fragrant white then creamy yellow flowers, deep green evergreen foliage, continuous flowering from June to September. The most fragrant and persistent version.
- Lonicera henryi — very dense dark green evergreen foliage, small pink-red flowers, vigorous. The most covering and graphic version.
- Lonicera periclymenum 'Serotina' — very fragrant bicolor pink-cream flowers, deciduous foliage. The late bicolor and most romantic version.
- Lonicera periclymenum 'Belgica' — fragrant pink and yellow flowers, early spring flowering then remontant. The early rustic version.
Exposure & location
'Halliana' honeysuckle enjoys soft to bright light — it tolerates partial shade very well but flowers more in bright exposure. Like clematis, it thrives better when its roots stay cool and shaded: mulch the base of the pot or cover it with a low plant.
- Exposure: soft sun to partial shade — avoid the harsh full afternoon sun.
- Support: trellis, wire mesh, railing, or wall — it climbs by natural twining.
- Soil: rich, fresh, and well-drained.
- Hardiness: down to −15 °C — very resistant to European winters.
Place it near a seat or an open window to fully enjoy its sweet fragrance in the evening — honeysuckle scents more strongly at dusk and in warm weather.
Watering & care
'Halliana' honeysuckle is very undemanding once well-rooted. Water regularly the first year, then gradually space out. If leaves yellow, our guide on yellow leaves helps identify the cause — overwatering, lack of light, or nutrient deficiency.
- First year: regular watering to encourage rooting.
- Afterwards: moderate — tolerates periods without watering once established.
- Pruning: light pruning after flowering to maintain shape and stimulate new flowering shoots.
- Winter care: remove dry stems at the end of winter to keep a dense silhouette.
Regularly remove faded flowers during the season to prolong flowering — honeysuckle continuously forms new buds as long as light conditions are favorable.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The deep green evergreen foliage of 'Halliana' honeysuckle structures the support all year round, with the fragrant flowering as the summer highlight. It fits well in both romantic and contemporary compositions.
- For a duo of fragrant white climbers, Trachelospermum 'Star of Venice' extends the olfactory palette — its white star jasmine evergreen takes over before the honeysuckle and dresses the lower part of the wall while the Lonicera occupies the height.
- To add a contrasting purple note, Clematis 'The President' is an ideal companion — the large purple star-shaped clematis flowers contrast with the fragrant white honeysuckle on the same trellis.
- For a romantic wisteria upstream, Wisteria floribunda 'Alba' white opens the season in May-June with its hanging clusters, before 'Halliana' honeysuckle takes over until September.
- On a balcony in a planter, the Elho Greenville Easy Balcon green planter Ø25 cm matches the deep green foliage of the honeysuckle for a natural and leafy composition on a sunny railing.
Verdeia tips
- Guide the first stems at planting: honeysuckle naturally twines around supports — the first stems should be directed in the desired direction from the start, as they will serve as the main framework for the entire structure to come.
- Mulch the base generously: 'Halliana' flowers better when its roots stay cool — a thick mulch of 5 to 8 cm at the pot base retains summer moisture and protects roots from winter frost.
- Prune after flowering, not before: light pruning in late September-October maintains the shape and stimulates flowering shoots for the following year — pruned stems root easily to propagate the plant.
