Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the fronds of an Asparagus Sprengeri turn yellow? It is almost always related to air that is too dry, lack of light, or insufficient watering in summer — mist regularly, keep the soil slightly moist, and remove yellowed stems at the base to encourage new growth.
Can Asparagus Sprengeri grow hanging? Yes, it is actually its ideal growing method — its thin, flexible stems naturally cascade very densely and generously, a particularly spectacular effect when hung in macramé near a bright window.

🌿 Tender green fine foliage cascading • 🪴 Airy and light cascade • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H35 cm | Pot Ø17 cm
Asparagus densiflorus 'Sprengeri', also called ornamental asparagus, is a trailing tropical plant native to South Africa. Its thin, flexible stems covered with light and dense foliage cascade in an airy waterfall — a soft and natural volume effect that few trailing plants can reproduce with such lightness and density at the same time.
Robust and easy to care for, it is one of the most versatile decorative trailing plants in the catalog, alongside other Asparagus varieties in the range.
Which trailing Asparagus to choose?
Verdeia’s Asparagus range offers three very distinct shapes:
- Asparagus densiflorus 'Sprengeri' (this plant) — thin, flexible stems covered with very dense foliage cascading generously, with a wide and airy habit. The most trailing and voluminous in the range.
- Asparagus densiflorus 'Meyers' — upright stems shaped like thick, dense feathers, architectural and vertical habit. The choice for a structured and upright effect rather than trailing.
- Asparagus setaceus — very fine, feathery light green foliage, habit initially upright then trailing. The most delicate and airy in the range, with almost transparent foliage.
Light & placement
Asparagus 'Sprengeri' enjoys bright indirect light — this is essential to maintain dense foliage with a vibrant green color. It is one of the trailing plants best suited for hanging baskets and high shelves in a bright interior.
- Light: bright indirect to partial shade — protected from direct sun which dries out and yellows the fine fronds.
- Placement: living room, kitchen, office, bright bathroom — hanging or on a high shelf to let the stems cascade freely.
- Ideal: near an east or north-facing window — soft morning light is perfect to preserve the brightness of the fine foliage.
- Temperature: 18 to 25 °C, away from cold drafts.
Asparagus 'Sprengeri' likes stability — avoid moving it frequently and choose its permanent spot at installation to preserve harmonious growth.
Watering & care
Asparagus 'Sprengeri' is tolerant but appreciates regular moisture — its fleshy rhizome stores water and allows it to endure dry periods without immediate damage. The principles of good watering for tropical plants fully apply here.
- Frequency: about once a week — water when the substrate is dry on the surface.
- In summer: increase frequency if the air is warm or dry.
- In winter: reduce watering and keep the plant away from direct heat sources.
- Humidity: mist the foliage to prevent dry tips and recreate the tropical atmosphere of origin.
- Fertilizer: a mild liquid fertilizer every 3 to 4 weeks in spring and summer.
Remove stems that are completely yellowed at the base — they will never green again and consume energy from healthy stems. This regular pruning stimulates the growth of denser new shoots.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The light and generous cascade of Asparagus 'Sprengeri' brings a soft and natural volume that few trailing plants can reproduce — it pairs perfectly with more graphic and structured foliage, as detailed in our guide on hanging plants versus large plants.
- Hanging in a macramé in a bright living room, pair Asparagus 'Sprengeri' with a Scindapsus pictus 'Argyraeus' — the dense and light cascade of Asparagus contrasts with the finer stems and satin silver spots of Scindapsus for a very graphic and complementary hanging composition.
- On a high shelf in a duo, pair it with a Philodendron scandens — the very fine and airy foliage of Asparagus contrasts with the broader, shiny heart-shaped leaves of Philodendron for a very balanced trailing plant composition between lightness and volume.
- For a trailing plant composition in the bathroom, pair it with a Nephrolepis Green Lady — the two fine green foliages create a very harmonious set well suited to the ambient humidity of this space.
- In a matte white ceramic or natural macramé decorative pot, soft and organic materials naturally complement the lightness of the foliage — choose a hanging decorative pot that lets the stems cascade freely on all sides for a maximum waterfall effect.
Verdeia tips
- Mist year-round, especially indoors with heating: Asparagus 'Sprengeri' is sensitive to the dry air of heated apartments in winter — misting 2 to 3 times a week prevents browning of frond tips and keeps the foliage dense and green.
- Repot every 2 years in spring with a draining substrate: the Asparagus rhizome gradually grows and eventually fills the pot — a substrate made of universal potting soil and perlite with a layer of clay pebbles at the bottom ensures optimal drainage.
- Avoid frequent moves: unlike most trailing plants, Asparagus 'Sprengeri' acclimates slowly to changes in exposure — each move causes slight temporary yellowing of the foliage that disappears within a few weeks if the new conditions are favorable.
