Frequently Asked Questions
How do you care for a Cyperus Zumula? It’s a semi-aquatic plant: keep the soil constantly moist and maintain 1-2 cm of water in the saucer at all times. Water 2-3 times a week in summer. Place it in bright light. Regularly trim old stems to encourage new tender shoots that your cat will prefer.
Why are the stems of my Cyperus turning yellow? Yellowing is almost always due to a lack of water — the soil has dried out. Water immediately and refill the saucer. Unlike other houseplants, Cyperus doesn’t mind excess water but quickly suffers from dryness.

🐱 Natural catnip • 🌿 Graphic dwarf papyrus • ☀️ Bright light • 💧 Constantly moist substrate • 📏 H23 cm | Pot Ø12 cm • 🪴 Pet Candy Pot with included cat photos • 🐾 Non-toxic
The Cyperus Zumula, also called Dwarf Papyrus, is a semi-aquatic plant with thin stems topped by umbels of soft green leaves. Its fine, tender leaves are a natural and safe cat grass — felines love nibbling on them, which aids digestion like traditional cat grass. Presented in a Pet Candy pot with cat photos, it’s ready to place and gift.
Native to the wetlands of Madagascar, it loves having its roots in water and bright light — care differs from classic houseplants but is very simple once understood. Completely non-toxic to cats and dogs, it’s one of the most recommended plants in our pet-friendly selection.
Which Cyperus variety to choose?
Two Cyperus varieties are available in our catalog — same care, slightly different shape:
- Cyperus Zumula with cat pot (this plant) — compact size H23 cm, Pet Candy pot with cat photos included, fine and dense foliage. The ready-to-go cat grass version.
- Cyperus Alternifolius Zumula — slightly larger size H28 cm, foliage more structured in umbels. The decorative and graphic version.
If you have a cat, choose the Cyperus Zumula with cat pot — it’s designed to be accessible to your feline, and the pot clearly shows it’s for them. For a purely decorative plant, the Alternifolius Zumula is more graphic.
Exposure & location
The Cyperus Zumula is a plant from sunny, wet areas — it needs light to quickly produce new stems and keep its foliage dense and appealing for your cat.
- Ideal exposure: bright to very bright light — near a south- or west-facing window.
- Tolerates: a few hours of direct sunlight without issue.
- Avoid: full shade that slows growth and makes the foliage less attractive.
- Location: kitchen near the sink, bright bathroom, or windowsill — areas with natural humidity.
- Temperature: 15–25 °C, sensitive to frost.
Place it within your cat’s reach — on a coffee table, windowsill, or directly on the floor. It’s a plant made to be nibbled.
Watering & care
Cyperus is a semi-aquatic plant — its care is the opposite of other houseplants: here, excess water is not feared, dryness is.
- Watering: keep the substrate constantly moist — you can leave 1 to 2 cm of water in the saucer at all times.
- Frequency: 2 to 3 times a week in summer, 1 to 2 times a week in winter. Never let the substrate dry out completely.
- Water: use room temperature water, filtered or rainwater if possible.
- Fertilizer: liquid green plant fertilizer diluted by half, once a month in spring and summer.
- Pruning: cut yellow or dry stems at the base to encourage new growth — this is what your cat will prefer to nibble on.
Unlike most houseplants, a saucer full of water is the rule here, not the exception. If the substrate dries out, the stems quickly yellow — this is the only real risk with this plant.
Decor ideas & combinations
The Pet Candy pot clearly positions the Cyperus Zumula as a plant dedicated to your feline — decorative for you, functional for them.
- Cat plant corner: pair it with other non-toxic plants like a Calathea or a Peperomia to create a fully safe green space for your pet.
- In a bright bathroom: the natural humidity and indirect light make it an ideal spot — accessible to your cat and decorative for you.
- As a gift: the Pet Candy pot makes it an original and thoughtful present for any cat owner. Find our ideas in our selection of ready-to-gift plants.
If your cat nibbles too intensely, trim the damaged stems at the base and water generously — new tender shoots will appear within a few days.
Verdeia advice
- Never let the substrate dry out — this is the number one mistake with Cyperus. Unlike almost all other houseplants, here excess water is not a problem — dryness is. A saucer full of water = a happy plant.
- Yellow stems: lack of water or humidity — if stems turn yellow, water immediately and check that the saucer contains water. In too dry an atmosphere, mist the foliage regularly.
- Prune regularly for your cat — young tender shoots are what cats prefer. Regular pruning of old stems encourages new fresh leaves and keeps the plant attractive.
- Propagate easily in spring — divide the clump by separating the roots and repot each part in moist substrate. You get several plants in just a few minutes.
- Take it outside in summer if possible — on an exposed balcony or terrace, it will benefit from natural rain and produce even denser foliage.
- 🐾 100% non-toxic — Cyperus Zumula is completely safe for cats and dogs. Let your pet nibble the leaves without worry. Find more ideas in our pet-friendly plant selection.
