Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Bear's Foot fern grow in a bathroom? Yes, it’s actually the ideal spot — the natural humidity after showers perfectly replicates the conditions of its tropical habitat and keeps the fronds fresh and dense.
What is the difference between Humata tyermannii and Davallia? Both are epiphytic ferns with hairy rhizomes from the same family, but Humata has finer, more delicately divided fronds, and particularly visible, silvery-white, fuzzy rhizomes.

🌿 Hairy rhizomes reminiscent of bear paws • 🐾 Non-toxic • 💧 Moderate watering • ☀️ Indirect light • 🌫️ Loves humidity • 📏 H20 cm | Pot Ø17 cm
Humata tyermannii, nicknamed Bear's Paw Fern, is a rare tropical epiphytic fern native to Southeast Asia. Its finely divided, deep green fronds emerge from thick, fuzzy rhizomes - these silvery-white "bear paws" that creep over the edge of the pot are its most fascinating distinctive feature, and what immediately sets it apart from all other ferns.
Non-toxic to animals and easy to care for, it fits among the original and rare plants and in the indoor ferns in the Verdeia catalog.
Light & placement
Humata tyermannii naturally grows beneath the tropical forest canopy - it appreciates soft light and a humid atmosphere, exactly what the bathrooms and spaces with high ambient humidity provide. Its ideal placement depends on the balance between light and humidity indoors.
- Light: soft indirect light to partial shade - without direct sun, which dries out the fronds and yellows the foliage.
- Ideal locations: bright bathroom, living room, office - anywhere ambient humidity is naturally present.
- Avoid: direct heat sources such as radiators, cold drafts, and temperatures below 15 °C.
- Temperature: ideally 18 to 25 °C.
Place it in a bright, quiet spot where its fuzzy rhizomes can naturally extend over the edge of the pot - this slow movement of the "paws" out of the pot is a sign of a healthy plant.
Watering & care
Humata tyermannii is an epiphytic fern - its rhizomes allow it to tolerate occasional dry periods better than classic ferns grown in substrate. The balance is the same as for other tropical indoor plants: slightly moist substrate, never waterlogged.
- Frequency: approximately once a week - water when the surface of the substrate begins to dry.
- In winter: slightly space out watering.
- Humidity: mist the fronds regularly to preserve their freshness and shine.
- Fertilizer: a gentle fertilizer for green plants once a month in spring and summer.
- Cleaning: gently dust the fronds with a soft, damp cloth.
A tray of damp clay pebbles beneath the pot maintains constant humidity around the rhizomes - this is the most effective way to recreate the damp woodland atmosphere Humata needs without risking root rot.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Humata tyermannii's fuzzy rhizomes make it a plant to display prominently - hanging or on a high shelf, its "paws" naturally spilling over the pot are just as decorative as its fronds, as suggested by our guides to the best hanging plants.
- For a fern collection with highly contrasting textures, pair Humata with a Phlebodium Blue Star and an Asparagus setaceus - Humata's hairy rhizomes, Phlebodium's velvety blue-green fronds, and Asparagus's feathery foliage create a highly sophisticated trio of botanical textures.
- Hanging in a bathroom, let the rhizomes fall freely over the sides of the hanging pot - the natural humidity after showers perfectly recreates the conditions of its habitat, and the fuzzy "paws" are especially visible and graphic from below.
- For a wall-mounted epiphytic display, pair it with a Davallia bullata on a wooden board - the two ferns with climbing rhizomes naturally spread across the support and create a vibrant plant display.
- To highlight the contrast between green fronds and white rhizomes, choose a terracotta or anthracite ceramic decorative pot - the warm or dark ceramic tones make the rhizomes' fuzzy silvery-white color stand out by contrast.
Verdeia tips
- Never cut rhizomes that extend beyond the pot: these fuzzy extensions are not aerial roots to be removed but the plant's most distinctive living part - cutting them weakens Humata and deprives your arrangement of its most original element.
- Repot every 2 years in a rich, well-draining mix: a substrate made of universal potting soil, peat, and perlite provides the necessary drainage when repotting indoor plants.
- Avoid overly dark areas: if the fronds gradually turn yellow, it is almost always a sign of insufficient light or excess water - move the plant to a slightly brighter location before changing your watering routine.
