Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Pilea leaning to one side? It naturally grows towards the light source — turn the pot a quarter turn each week to maintain a symmetrical and balanced shape.
What is the difference between Pilea Peperomioides and Pilea Sugar? The Peperomioides has large bright green round leaves on upright stems, while the Sugar has small dark green leaves with silver patterns and a dense, compact shape — two very different silhouettes in the same family.

🌿 Glossy bright green round leaves • 🏡 Compact upright growth • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🐾 Non-toxic • 🏙️ 2 sizes available
The Pilea Peperomioides, nicknamed Chinese money plant, is native to the mountains of southwestern China, where it naturally grows in shaded rocky areas. Its glossy round leaves, carried on long upright stems, create a light, graphic silhouette that is instantly recognizable. It is one of the easiest plants to care for in the catalogue.
Non-toxic to cats and dogs, it is perfectly suited to homes with pets, among the pet-friendly indoor plants.
Which Pilea variety should you choose?
The Pilea genus offers a wide diversity of shapes and colours. Here is how Pilea Peperomioides differs from the other varieties in the catalogue:
- Pilea Peperomioides (this plant) — large glossy bright green round leaves carried on upright stems, with an airy, graphic shape; regularly produces offsets. The iconic version.
- Pilea Sugar — dark green leaves with bright silver patterns, compact and dense growth, highly decorative. The silver version.
- Pilea 'Mojito' — soft green leaves marbled with silver, with very bright irregular patterns and a compact shape. The marbled version.
- Pilea depressa — very small bright green leaves, trailing or creeping growth, ideal for hanging baskets. The miniature trailing version.
Light & placement
Pilea Peperomioides enjoys bright indirect light — bright enough to maintain its vivid green leaves and encourage balanced growth, but never direct sun, which would stain and scorch its round leaves. Among the easy-care plants for city dwellers, it is one of the best suited to bright apartments.
- Light: bright indirect light — avoid direct sun.
- Placement: desk, living room, shelf, windowsill — anywhere with stable, bright light.
- Temperature: 15–27 °C, without sudden fluctuations.
- Substrate: light, rich and well drained — universal potting soil with perlite.
Turn the pot a quarter turn each week — Pilea tends to lean towards the light, and regular rotation ensures balanced, symmetrical growth.
Watering & care
Pilea Peperomioides likes slightly moist soil but never waterlogged — excess water causes yellowing leaves and root rot. Allow the surface to dry between waterings. Watering indoor plants should be adjusted to the season: more frequent in summer and much less frequent in winter.
- Frequency: once a week in spring and summer, every 2 weeks in winter.
- Drainage: essential — pot with drainage holes and well-draining substrate.
- Fertiliser: once a month in spring and summer, using diluted liquid fertiliser.
- Propagation: separate the offsets that grow at the base and replant them in fresh substrate — they root easily within a few weeks, as with propagation from cuttings.
Leaves yellowing at the base almost always indicate excess water — let the soil dry out more and check that the pot drains properly before watering again.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The light, graphic silhouette of Pilea Peperomioides — round leaves floating on upright stems — naturally suits modern, minimalist interiors. Its bright green foliage catches the light and livens up bright spaces without weighing them down.
- On a shelf or desk, place it in the white round Gabriel ceramic Ø14 cm — the pot's matte white finish highlights the bright green of the round leaves in a clean, luminous arrangement.
- For a warm, natural combination, pair it with the ochre Gabriel ceramic Ø14 cm — the warmth of the matte ochre complements the Pilea's bright green for a soft, botanical arrangement on light wood furniture.
- For a graphic pairing, combine it with a Pilea Sugar — the Sugar's dense silver leaves contrast with the Peperomioides' upright round leaves for a highly effective textural duo within the same family.
- On a windowsill, place it in the pink embossed ceramic Ø13.5 cm — the pot's raised texture and soft pink complement the lightness of the round foliage for a fresh, spring-like arrangement.
Verdeia tips
- Turn the pot a quarter turn each week: Pilea naturally leans towards the light — regular rotation ensures symmetrical growth and harmonious development of all the stems.
- Separate the offsets when they reach 5–6 cm: Baby Pilea plants growing at the base can be separated from the mother plant with their roots and repotted directly into fresh substrate — it is the easiest way to propagate and share the plant.
- Wipe the round leaves regularly: a damp cloth once a month is enough to preserve their characteristic glossy shine and remove dust that blocks the stomata.
