Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the leaves of my Calathea Flamestar stop moving at night? Nyctinastic movement decreases or disappears in case of low light, water stress, or drafts. Move the plant to a slightly brighter spot, ensure the soil stays slightly moist, and keep it away from cold sources. The movement should resume within a few days.
Is the Calathea Flamestar toxic to pets? No, Calathea is completely non-toxic to dogs and cats. It is one of the few large graphic plants that is entirely pet-friendly, making it an ideal choice for homes with animals.

🔥 Striking graphic patterns • 💜 Deep purple undersides • ☀️ Bright to medium indirect light • 💧 Regular watering • 📏 H75 cm | Pot Ø19 cm • 🌬️ Air-purifying • 🐾 Non-toxic
The Calathea Flamestar, also called Peacock Plant, is a tropical plant native to the humid understory of South America. Its large dark green leaves striped with light green, and their deep purple underside visible when the leaves rise, create a two-act visual show — top by day, underside by night.
Like all Marantaceae, it exhibits nyctinasty: its leaves fold up each evening and unfold in the morning — a natural movement that signals the plant’s good health. Completely non-toxic to pets, it is a rare graphic pet-friendly plant. Discover it in our Calathea collection and our new plant care guide.
Which Calathea variety should you choose?
The Calathea genus offers a unique diversity of patterns and textures. Here are the most distinctive profiles from our catalog:
- Calathea Flamestar (this plant) — striking graphic patterns, deep purple undersides, size H75 cm | Pot Ø19 cm. The largest and most contrasting.
- Calathea Warscewiczii — dark green velvety foliage with feather-like patterns, burgundy underside. The most velvety and darkest.
- Calathea Orbifolia — large round silver-green leaves with wide stripes. The largest and brightest.
- Calathea Ornata — fine pale pink stripes on a dark green background. The most delicate and elegant.
- Calathea Medallion — light green medallion patterns on a dark green background, purple underside. The most classic.
Other varieties are available in our catalog — Stripestar, Bluegrass, Fusion White, Majestica, and more.
Exposure & location
The Calathea Flamestar naturally grows under tropical forest canopy — it prefers diffused light and constant humidity, and does not tolerate direct sun or dry air.
- Ideal exposure: bright to moderate indirect light — a few meters from a window, never in direct sunlight.
- Avoid: direct sunlight that burns leaves and fades patterns, very dark corners that slow growth and make stripes disappear.
- Temperature: 18–24 °C, without sudden changes or drafts — very sensitive to temperature shocks.
- Humidity: 60–70% essential — place on a bed of moist clay pebbles or use a humidifier nearby.
- Substrate: light and well-drained — universal potting soil with perlite.
If the leaves no longer lift in the evening, it’s often due to lack of light or water stress. Move to a slightly brighter spot and check watering.
Watering & care
- Watering: regular — keep the substrate slightly moist at all times without ever soaking it.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times a week in spring-summer, reduced in winter.
- Water: non-calcareous water is essential — filtered or rainwater. Hard water causes characteristic brown edges on leaves.
- Humidity: mist the foliage 2 to 3 times a week in dry air.
- Drainage: pot with drainage holes required, empty the saucer after watering.
- Fertilizer: liquid green plant fertilizer diluted by half, once a month from April to September.
Brown edges on leaves are almost always caused by hard water or dry air — rarely by watering issues. Start by changing the water before adjusting watering frequency. Check our complete watering guide to master frequency by season.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The Calathea Flamestar is a plant that enlivens a space on two levels — its patterns by day, the purple underside that appears when the leaves lift in the evening.
- Solo in a bright living room: its D19 x H75 cm size makes it a statement plant — in a terracotta or beige ceramic pot, it creates an immediate tropical focal point.
- In arrangement: pair it with a Maranta or an Alocasia for a contrast of shapes and patterns in the same tropical corner.
- Ideal pot: natural terracotta, matte beige or white ceramic — warm, neutral tones highlight the graphic foliage without competing with it.
Its purple underside is especially visible in the evening when the leaves lift — place it where you can watch it from your sofa or desk at the end of the day.
Verdeia advice
- Limescale is its number one enemy — the characteristic brown edges on Calathea are not a sign of overwatering but a reaction to limescale and fluoride in tap water. Switch to filtered water or water left to sit overnight before use.
- Humidity is essential — native to humid tropical understories, it suffers from dry air in heated apartments during winter. Mist 2 to 3 times a week or place the pot on a bed of constantly moist clay pebbles.
- Leaf movement indicates health — a plant that closes well at night and opens in the morning is a happy plant. If movement stops, check light and humidity first.
- Protect from drafts — Calathea is especially sensitive to sudden temperature changes. Keep it away from poorly insulated windows in winter and air conditioners in summer.
- Repot every 2 years in spring — use a light, well-draining substrate (universal potting soil + perlite). A pot that’s slightly too large retains too much moisture — choose a size just a bit bigger.
- 🐾 Non-toxic — Calathea is completely safe for dogs and cats. One of the few large graphic plants that is fully pet-friendly. Find more ideas in our plants and pets guide.
