Does Henry's Virginia creeper damage walls? Its adhesive suckers can mark painted or delicate plastered surfaces — it is better suited for stone, brick, or raw concrete walls, and metal fences.
Is Henry's Virginia creeper evergreen? No, it is a deciduous plant — its foliage falls in winter after the autumn blaze, leaving the wall bare from November to March and highlighting architectural facades during the cold season.

🍂 Silvery green and purple foliage • 🔴 Crimson red blaze in autumn • 🌿 Clings by suction cups • ❄️ Hardy down to −20 °C • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
Parthenocissus henryana, or Henry's Virginia creeper, is a climbing plant native to China, with deep green compound leaves veined with silver and purple highlights. Unlike common Virginia creeper, it stands out with its very decorative silver veins and a more refined habit. In autumn, its foliage bursts into a spectacular crimson red before falling.
Among the hardy climbers in the catalog, it is one of the easiest — it clings to walls by itself thanks to its adhesive suction cups, without stakes or ties.
Which variety of Virginia creeper to choose?
The Parthenocissus genus offers two species with distinct characteristics — both available in the catalog:
- Parthenocissus henryana (this plant) — deep green compound leaves veined with silver and purple highlights, more refined and less vigorous habit, prefers partial shade. The elegant and decorative version all year round.
- Parthenocissus quinquefolia 'Engelmannii' — shiny green leaves with 5 leaflets, very vigorous and covering, tolerates full sun. The most powerful and fastest wall-covering version.
Exposure & location
Parthenocissus henryana prefers partial shade or gentle sun — these conditions bring out its most pronounced silver veins and the most intense autumn red. In full sun, the foliage suffers and loses its characteristic silver highlights. Ideal for shaded facades or north- or east-facing balconies.
- Exposure: partial shade to gentle sun — avoid harsh full sun.
- Support: wall, fence, pergola, or facade — it clings by itself with suction cups without any ties.
- Soil: ordinary, fresh, and well-drained.
- Hardiness: down to −20 °C — among the most frost-resistant climbers.
Beware of painted or delicate plaster surfaces — the adhesive suction cups of Parthenocissus can mark and damage delicate surfaces during pruning or removal.
Watering & care
Parthenocissus henryana is very undemanding once well established. Water regularly during the first year, then the plant becomes almost self-sufficient. An annual pruning at the end of winter helps control its growth and encourages denser foliage. Semi-woody stem cuttings taken in summer root easily. If leaves yellow outside of autumn, check for overwatering or too sunny a location.
- Watering: regular during the first year, moderate afterwards — tolerates drought well once established.
- Pruning: light at the end of winter to control growth and thicken foliage.
- Foliage: deciduous — the wall is bare in winter, covered from March to November.
- Care: very easy — no guidance or tying needed.
Avoid walls exposed to dry, cold winds — a sheltered location significantly extends the decorative season and preserves the brightness of the silver veins until the first frosts.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Parthenocissus henryana creates a textured and changing green backdrop — silvery green and purple in spring and summer, blazing crimson red in autumn. Its deciduous foliage lets the wall breathe in winter, highlighting an architectural facade or fence.
- To dress the wall in winter too, pair it with the evergreen Lonicera henryi — its dark green foliage year-round complements Parthenocissus during the months when it is bare, for a permanently dressed facade.
- For a texture contrast on a fence, the variegated white and green evergreen Hedera algeriensis 'Gloire de Marengo' contrasts elegantly with the dark foliage of Parthenocissus — two climbers, evergreen and deciduous, that complement each other all year.
- To add fragrant blooms, the evergreen Clematis armandii with very fragrant white flowers naturally integrates into the Parthenocissus backdrop — its flowers in March-April precede the full leafing of the Virginia creeper.
- For maximum autumn effect, pair it with Engelmannii on the same large wall — the two Virginia creepers with slightly different foliage create a spectacular gradient of reds and oranges in October-November.
Verdeia Tips
- Plant it in partial shade for more pronounced silver veins: in full sun, the foliage turns uniformly green and loses its characteristic silver highlights — a shaded or east-facing exposure preserves the full color richness of the foliage throughout the season.
- Let it cling by itself: its adhesive suction cups allow it to climb unaided on any rough surface — do not tie the stems, they will find their way naturally and create a more organic and uniform green wall.
- Prune at the end of winter before leafing: this is the only time you can clearly see the stem structure — a light pruning on shoots extending beyond the support is enough to maintain a neat silhouette without sacrificing the upcoming autumn bloom.
