🌿 Green and white marbled veined foliage • ✨ "Living" plant that opens and closes its leaves • ☀️ Partial shade bright • 💧 Substrate always slightly moist • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H50 cm | Pot Ø19 cm
The Calathea ornata 'Whitestar' — also called Peacock Plant — captivates with its spectacular deep green foliage marked with fine white-silver stripes reminiscent of a peacock's plumage. Native to the tropical forests of South America, it is part of the Calathea catalog, these fascinating plants nicknamed "praying plants" because of the movement of their leaves in rhythm with the day.
Nicknamed "the living plant," the Calathea opens its leaves during the day and closes them at nightfall in a subtle but fascinating nyctinastic movement. It offers a plant presence that is both architectural and soothing, ideal in a living room, bedroom, or bright office corner.
Exposure & location
The Calathea Whitestar appreciates bright but filtered light, never direct sun which fades its foliage and damages the characteristic silver stripes. A location 1 or 2 meters from a window facing east, west, or southeast suits it perfectly. It also tolerates partial shade, making it an excellent candidate for less exposed rooms like a bedroom or bright hallway.
- Exposure: bright partial shade — prolonged direct sun to avoid, especially in summer.
- Location: living room, bedroom, bright bathroom, office — away from heat sources and cold drafts.
- Temperature: 18 to 24 °C — minimum 15 °C, protected from sudden changes.
- Soil type: light and well-drained potting soil, rich in organic matter, slightly acidic.
If the leaves curl during the day and remain upright, it is usually a sign of too much light or too dry air — move the plant one meter away from the light source and increase ambient humidity.
Watering & care
The Calathea appreciates a substrate that is constantly moist but never waterlogged: this is the key balance to keep foliage healthy. Finding the right balance between light and humidity is crucial for this tropical plant. Prefer soft, non-calcareous water at room temperature — rainwater or filtered water remains ideal. If you hesitate about frequency, spacing out indoor plant waterings is almost always the right decision to avoid root rot. Calatheas love ambient humidity: regularly mist the foliage with low-calcium water to recreate its original tropical atmosphere.
- Watering: regular — substrate always slightly moist, about every 4 to 6 days in summer, spaced out in winter.
- Drainage: essential — empty the saucer after each watering and avoid stagnation around the roots.
- Humidity: high — mist the foliage 2 to 3 times a week or place a humidifier nearby.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants diluted by half, once a month in spring and summer.
- Repotting: every 2 years in spring into a pot just slightly larger, with fresh and draining substrate.
If the leaf edges brown, it is almost always a water problem: too calcareous, too cold, or air too dry — let tap water rest 24 hours before watering and group the Calathea with other tropical plants to create a humid microclimate.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The white and green striped foliage of the Whitestar plays the role of a graphic piece in any tropical composition. Its compact silhouette and upright habit make it an ideal candidate for balanced tropical compositions, structuring without dominating its neighbors. In case of damaged or discolored leaves, the diagnosis of common symptoms quickly identifies the cause and allows action before the problem spreads.
- For a contrasting Marantaceae trio, pair it with a Calathea Orbifolia with large round silver leaves and a Maranta Fascinator with red veined foliage — three textures, three graphic rhythms, same water and humidity needs for a coherent plant corner.
- For a graphic silver duo, place the Whitestar next to a Scindapsus Pictus Trebie with silver spotted foliage — the vertical white stripes of the Calathea respond to the spots of the Pothos for a refined tropical dialogue.
- For a soothing bedroom corner, pair it with an Asparagus Sprengeri with soft green feathery foliage — the delicacy of the light foliage balances the graphic rigor of the stripes, creating a soft tropical balance at bedside table height.
- To enhance the foliage in a tone-on-tone decorative pot, choose a Gabriel ceramic decorative pot Bordeaux Ø14 cm that highlights the green-silver contrast of the foliage, or a Celestial jute decorative pot Ø20 cm for a natural and soothing note.
Grouping several Calathea together creates a natural humid microclimate through shared evapotranspiration — it is the simplest and most aesthetic solution to offer them the tropical atmosphere they love.
Verdeia Tips
- Prefer rainwater or filtered water: Calatheas are particularly sensitive to lime and chlorine which quickly brown leaf edges — collecting rainwater or letting tap water rest 24 hours before each watering makes all the difference for foliage longevity.
- Observe the nyctinastic movement: leaves straighten and close each evening then open in the morning — this natural movement is an excellent health indicator: if the plant remains still day and night, it suffers from a watering or light problem to correct.
- Cut damaged leaves at the base: remove fully yellowed or browned leaves at soil level rather than waiting for them to dry out — this stimulates new shoots from the rhizome and preserves the compact and dense appearance of the clump.
