Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the leaves of my Philodendron melanochrysum losing their velvety texture? Lack of light or excess dust on the foliage are the most common causes — move it closer to a window and gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth.
Is Philodendron melanochrysum toxic to pets? Yes — like all Philodendrons, it contains calcium oxalate crystals, keep it out of reach of cats, dogs, and young children.

🌿 Dark velvety green foliage • 🎨 Elegant light veins • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H75 cm | Pot Ø21 cm
The Philodendron melanochrysum is one of the most sought-after species in the genus — its dark velvety green foliage with very pronounced light veins gives it a unique luxurious texture that no other Philodendron has. A climbing plant native to the tropical forests of Colombia, its leaves grow larger with age and reach spectacular sizes on a support. Discover our entire Philodendron collection and our Philodendron vs Monstera guide.
Its special feature: it is a climbing plant — placed on a moss pole, each new leaf emerges larger than the previous one. Our large indoor plants guide explains how to incorporate it into a space.
Exposure & Location
The Philodendron melanochrysum needs bright indirect light to maintain the velvety texture of its foliage — in partial shade, the leaves lighten and lose their luxurious look.
- Exposure: bright indirect light — window without direct sun.
- Ideal for: bright living room, office, well-lit bedroom.
- Temperature: 18 to 27 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
- Substrate: light, rich, and well-draining — universal potting soil with perlite.
Watering & Care
- Watering: moderate — let the top 3 to 5 cm of substrate dry out between waterings. Check our light and humidity guide to find the right balance.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring-summer, every two weeks in winter.
- Drainage: essential — pot with drainage holes and well-draining substrate.
- Humidity: prefers 60 to 70% humidity — mist occasionally or group plants together.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring and summer, diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants.
- Cleaning: gently wipe leaves with a damp cloth to preserve their velvety texture.
Decor Ideas & Plant Pairings
Its very dark velvety foliage creates a strong contrast with light or variegated foliage plants — this contrast is the key to a composition featuring the melanochrysum.
- Texture contrast: pair it with an Alocasia macrorrhiza with large smooth, shiny leaves — dark velvet vs smooth shine, two radically opposite textures in the same tropical XXL style.
- Philodendron collection: pair it with the variegated Philodendron White Princess — the very dark green of the melanochrysum dramatically highlights the white patches of the White Princess.
- Support: place it on a moss pole or a natural Selin basket — the natural mesh highlights the climbing silhouette without weighing it down.
Verdeia Tips
- Set up a support now: the Philodendron melanochrysum is a climbing plant — on a moss pole, each new leaf grows larger than the previous one; without support, growth stays compact and leaves remain small.
- Wipe leaves regularly: dust dulls the velvety texture of the foliage — a monthly wipe with a slightly damp cloth is enough to revive the leaves’ luxurious look.
- Avoid direct sunlight: it quickly burns the velvety foliage and leaves irreversible spots on the leaves — bright indirect light less than 2 meters from a window is ideal.

FAQ – Everything to know before adopting your Verdeia plant
How are my plants prepared before shipping?
All our plants are selected from our European partner nurseries. Before shipping, they are watered, cleaned, and protected with breathable, secure packaging. Each package is designed to ensure your plant arrives in perfect health, without any transport-related stress.
Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.
What are the delivery times and conditions?
Shipping is done within 48 business hours, with tracked delivery within 2 to 5 business days. Delivery costs €5.60 — free for orders over €50. You will receive a tracking link as soon as the package is shipped.
What to do upon receiving my plant?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What to do if my plant arrives damaged?
Contact us within 48 hours with a photo of the issue. Our team will assess the situation and offer you the best solution: replacement, partial refund, or recovery advice.
Can I return a plant?
Since plants are living beings, standard returns are not possible. However, we guarantee good health upon delivery: if the plant arrives damaged, it will be replaced free of charge. For any other cases (order error, decorative pot, accessory), returns are possible within 14 days.
