🐾 Non-toxic • 🌤️ Partial shade / Soft light • 🌿 Green, silver and purple striped foliage • 💧 Moderate watering
The Ctenanthe oppenheimiana, also known as the "Never Never Plant", captivates with its large, lance-shaped leaves finely striped in green and silver, with a spectacular purple underside revealed when the leaves fold. Native to the humid forests of Brazil, it belongs to the same family as Calatheas and Marantas. Pair it with Ctenanthe and Calatheas and Marantas.
Tolerant of partial shade and non-toxic, it adapts perfectly to interiors without direct sun, among plants for low-light rooms.
Light & placement
Ctenanthe naturally grows beneath the tropical canopy - it appreciates soft, filtered light and tolerates partial shade well, provided you avoid complete darkness, which dulls its silver patterns.
- Light: partial shade to indirect light - direct sun fades the patterns and scorches the leaves.
- Ideal for: living room, entryway, bright bathroom, reading nook.
- Temperature: 15 to 27 °C, protected from drafts and sudden changes.
- Growing medium: rich, well-drained - universal potting soil with organic matter.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate - keep the growing medium slightly moist without waterlogging it. Use low-limescale water at room temperature to prevent spots on the leaves. Its ideal placement depends on the balance between light and humidity.
- Frequency: approximately once a week in spring and summer, every 10 to 12 days in winter.
- Humidity: enjoys a humid atmosphere - mist regularly or place the pot on a bed of damp clay pebbles.
- Fertilizer: every 2 to 4 weeks in spring and summer, using a gentle fertilizer for green plants.
- Pruning: remove old leaves at the base to encourage new growth.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its two-tone striped foliage adds depth and contrast - it works particularly well paired with plants with solid-colored foliage that let its patterns take center stage.
- Within the Marantaceae family: pair it with a Maranta Leuconeura and a Calathea orbifolia - three plants from the same family, three different patterns, with the same care requirements.
- For a more compact version: discover the Ctenanthe setosa with lighter silver foliage - same genus, two distinct personalities for a cohesive arrangement.
- Decorative pot: light matte ceramic or a beige terracotta pot highlights the striped patterns without competing with them.
Verdeia tips
- Low-limescale water: use filtered water or let water stand in the open air for 24 hours - limescale leaves white deposits on the leaves that dull the silver and striped patterns.
- Ambient humidity: Ctenanthe suffers more from a lack of humidity than from underwatering - a humidifier or a damp pebble nearby makes a real difference, especially in winter with the heating on.
- Turn the pot every two weeks: to encourage balanced, even foliage on both sides and allow each leaf to receive the same amount of indirect light.

FAQ – Everything to know before adopting your Verdeia plant
How are my plants prepared before shipping?
All our plants are selected from our European partner nurseries. Before shipping, they are watered, cleaned, and protected with breathable, secure packaging. Each package is designed to ensure your plant arrives in perfect health, without any transport-related stress.
Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.
What are the delivery times and conditions?
Shipping is done within 48 business hours, with tracked delivery within 2 to 5 business days. Delivery costs €5.60 — free for orders over €50. You will receive a tracking link as soon as the package is shipped.
What to do upon receiving my plant?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What to do if my plant arrives damaged?
Contact us within 48 hours with a photo of the issue. Our team will assess the situation and offer you the best solution: replacement, partial refund, or recovery advice.
Can I return a plant?
Since plants are living beings, standard returns are not possible. However, we guarantee good health upon delivery: if the plant arrives damaged, it will be replaced free of charge. For any other cases (order error, decorative pot, accessory), returns are possible within 14 days.
