The Dieffenbachia 'Camilla', or Dumb cane, is a tropical plant native to the humid forests of Central and South America. Its large oval leaves, with a bright creamy-white center bordered by a fine dark green edge, create luminous, contrasting foliage that immediately brightens dimly lit interiors.
Its distinctive feature is the sharpness of the boundary: unlike speckled varieties, the white here covers the entire center of the leaf blade in one continuous area, framed by a regular green border. Two sizes available, from a desk plant to a low-cabinet plant.
Which Dieffenbachia variety should you choose?
The Dieffenbachia genus comes in several sizes and variegation patterns:
- Dieffenbachia 'Camilla' (this plant) — a continuous creamy-white center bordered by dark green (2 sizes: H35 cm | Pot Ø12 cm and H45 cm | Pot Ø17 cm). The most contrasting version.
- Dieffenbachia 'Tropic Snow' — white areas covering most of the leaf blade on an upright plant. The brightest and most imposing version.

Light & location
'Camilla' tolerates partial shade but gradually loses its distinctive character there: new leaves unfurl greener as the plant compensates for the lack of light by producing more chlorophyll.
- Light: soft indirect light to partial shade — never direct sun, which burns the leaf blade and causes the white to fade.
- Location: hallway, bedroom, office, or dimly lit room — away from radiators and drafts.
- Temperature: 18 to 27°C, with no sudden fluctuations.
- Soil type: rich and well-draining — universal potting soil amended with perlite.
Its cream-white center reflects the available light and visually brightens the space: it is one of the few plants that benefits from being placed in a dim corner rather than in front of a window.
Watering & care
Dieffenbachia prefers slightly dry substrate to waterlogged substrate: excess water causes the stem bases to rot before the foliage reacts. A lightened mix of perlite and clay pebbles helps limit this risk.
- Watering: moderate — let the surface of the substrate dry to a depth of 2 cm, approximately once a week in spring and summer, and much less frequently in winter.
- Drainage: a pot with drainage holes is essential — place clay pebbles at the bottom and empty the saucer after each watering.
- Humidity: prefers 50 to 70% — mist the foliage during the heating season.
- Foliage: regularly wiping the leaves with a damp cloth preserves the cream-white sheen.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants, diluted by half, once a month from April to September only.
- Repotting: every 2 to 3 years in spring, using a slightly larger pot and wearing gloves.
Yellowing lower leaves normally accompanies stem growth; yellowing that spreads to the upper leaves, however, indicates overwatering.

Verdeia tips
- Wear gloves whenever handling it: the sap contains calcium oxalate crystals that strongly irritate the skin and mucous membranes. Repotting, propagation, pruning dry leaves—always wear gloves, then wash your hands.
- Move it closer to the light if the white fades: newly unfurled leaves that are greener than the older ones indicate insufficient light. Changing its location restores the variegation on subsequent shoots, never on leaves that have already formed.
- Revive a bare stem: with age, the base loses its leaves and becomes bare. A clean cut 15 cm above the substrate in spring triggers new shoots, and the removed section can be propagated directly in the water.
