Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Philodendron White Princess and the White Knight or White Wizard? All three are green and white variegated Philodendrons, but they differ in their petioles and leaf shape. The White Princess has green petioles, the White Knight has burgundy red petioles, and the White Wizard has completely white petioles. The White Princess is generally the easiest of the three in terms of care and price.
Is a completely white leaf on my Philodendron normal? Yes — a completely white leaf is striking but temporary. Without chlorophyll, it cannot photosynthesize and will gradually turn brown. This is a natural feature of the unstable variegation of this variety. Cut the leaf once it has fully browned to encourage the plant to produce new leaves.

🌿 Unique green and white variegation on each leaf • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🌱 Rare collectible plant • 🏙️ 3 sizes available
The Philodendron White Princess is a collectible tropical plant with heart-shaped leaves adorned with creamy white variegation contrasting with deep green. Each leaf is different from the last — the distribution of white and green is unpredictable with each new growth, making each plant absolutely unique and its observation over time particularly fascinating.
Native to the tropical forests of Central and South America, it is one of the most sought-after hybrid varieties of the Philodendron genus — it combines the family’s characteristic robustness with spectacular variegated foliage rarely available at this price. It is also featured in our selection of original and rare plants.
Which Philodendron variety to choose?
The Philodendron genus offers very different foliage — here is how the White Princess stands out:
- Philodendron White Princess (this plant) — variable green and white variegation, each leaf unique, compact climbing habit. The collectible variegated version.
- Philodendron Birkin — dark green foliage with fine, structured, and regular white stripes. The geometric variegation version.
- Philodendron Green Princess — shiny solid green foliage, compact habit, very easy. The classic version without variegation.
- Philodendron Prince of Orange — new bright orange leaves that gradually turn green. The warm colorful version.
- Philodendron Imperial Red — spectacular red-bronze foliage with large smooth leaves. The colorful XXL version.
- Philodendron Billietiae — elongated leaves with orange petioles, rare climbing habit. The elongated collector’s version.
If you’re undecided between White Princess and Pink Princess — both have similar variegation instability, but Pink Princess produces pink areas instead of white, which is much rarer and more demanding to grow.
Exposure & placement
The White Princess needs bright indirect light to maintain its white variegation — this is its main requirement. In insufficient light, new leaves tend to gradually turn green to compensate for the lack of chlorophyll, and the plant progressively loses its decorative appeal. The white parts of the leaves are also much more sensitive to direct sun than the green areas — exposure to hot sun quickly causes necrosis.
- Ideal exposure: bright indirect light — east or west-facing window, bright shelf, well-lit desk.
- Avoid: direct sunlight that burns the delicate white parts, and partial shade that makes the foliage turn green again.
- Temperature: 18–27 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
- Soil: light, airy, and very well-draining — tropical plant potting mix with perlite and bark.
If new leaves mostly emerge green without white variegation, it’s almost always due to lack of light — move the plant to a brighter spot and the following leaves will regain their white areas.
Watering & care
The White Princess tolerates slight underwatering better than excess water — its roots are sensitive to rot in constantly soggy soil. Yellowing leaves are almost always a sign of too frequent watering; the finger test remains the best guide to find the right watering rhythm.
- Watering: moderate — let the top 2 to 3 cm of soil dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring and summer; reduce in winter.
- Humidity: 60 to 70% — mist occasionally or place near a humidifier.
- Drainage: essential — pot must have drainage holes, empty saucer after watering.
- Fertilizer: diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants, once a month in spring and summer.
A fully white leaf without chlorophyll will eventually brown — this is inevitable and normal. Only remove it when it is completely dry to avoid unnecessary stress on the plant.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The white variegation of the White Princess naturally makes it the star plant of any arrangement — it immediately draws the eye and brings rare sophistication. To create arrangements around it with other graphic plants, check out our ideas for creating a tropical atmosphere.
- In a variegated duo: pair it with a Scindapsus Pictus Trebie — the shimmering silver spots of the Scindapsus interact with the creamy white areas of the White Princess for a composition entirely in pale, bright tones.
- In a Philodendron collection: group it with a Birkin and a Prince of Orange on the same shelf — three very different variegation patterns (free areas, regular stripes, color gradient) within the same family.
- On a bright shelf: the H25 cm | Pot Ø12 cm size is ideal for a shelf — slip it into a white relief ceramic decorative pot for a harmony of white and green that highlights each leaf individually.
- Decorative pot and colorimetry: the creamy white areas stand out particularly well against a blue relief ceramic decorative pot — the cool contrast between warm white and matte blue creates an elegant and unexpected effect.
Verdeia Tips
- Observe each new leaf as a surprise: the distribution of white and green varies with each shoot — some will be mostly white, others mostly green. It is the natural instability of the variegation that makes this plant fascinating to watch over time.
- Install a moss support at purchase: the White Princess is naturally climbing — a moist moss support encourages vertical growth, stimulates aerial root development, and promotes the appearance of progressively larger leaves.
- Maintain bright and consistent light: do not move the plant frequently — a stable and bright exposure produces the most generous and contrasting variegation, while repeated location changes disrupt growth.
The White Princess is one of the rare accessible variegated plants that offers real visual evolution over time — each new leaf is a discovery, making it a particularly endearing plant for beginner collectors.
