Frequently Asked Questions
How can I get more deeply split leaves on my Rhaphidophora tetrasperma? Place it near a source of bright indirect light and set up a stake — the leaves grow larger and more split as the plant climbs and matures.
Can Rhaphidophora tetrasperma be propagated by cuttings? Yes, it is one of the easiest Araceae to propagate — take a stem with at least one node and one leaf, place it in a glass of water in indirect light, and the first roots will appear in 2 to 3 weeks.

🌿 Split green foliage • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🌱 Easy to care for • 🐾 Toxic to pets
Native to the tropical forests of Thailand and Malaysia, Rhaphidophora tetrasperma belongs to the Araceae family and naturally climbs trees in the canopy. Its deeply split green foliage has earned it the nickname "Monstera Minima" — although it is not a true Monstera but a distinct species, more compact and significantly faster-growing. Pair it with Monstera and relatives and collector's plants.
Versatile, it can be grown on a support to climb or left to trail freely from a shelf. Its vigorous growth regularly produces new leaves that become increasingly split as the plant matures.
Rhaphidophora tetrasperma or Monstera: which should you choose?
Split foliage is shared by several species in the catalogue. Here's how to choose between Monstera and its close relatives according to your space and preferences:
- Rhaphidophora tetrasperma (this plant) — compact, split leaves, fast growth, climbing or trailing growth. The mini version, ideal for small spaces.
- Monstera Deliciosa — large perforated and split leaves, imposing growth, slow-growing. The classic XXL version.
- Monstera Adansonii — smaller perforated leaves, trailing or climbing growth, delicate foliage. The trailing, fenestrated version.
- Monstera Thai Constellation — cream-and-green variegated foliage with stable marbling, a rare collector's plant. The rare variegated version.
Display & placement
Rhaphidophora tetrasperma needs bright indirect light to produce deeply cut leaves and maintain its rapid growth. In partial shade, the leaves remain less deeply cut - the balance between light and humidity is crucial for foliage quality.
- Position: bright indirect light - tolerates partial shade, avoids direct sun.
- Ideal: a bright shelf, living room, office or bedroom with a well-lit window.
- Temperature: 18 to 27 °C, without sudden fluctuations or drafts.
- Substrate: light, rich and well-draining - universal potting soil mixed with perlite.
Watering & care
Its rapid growth calls for regular but measured watering - the substrate should remain slightly moist without ever becoming waterlogged. Yellowing leaves are almost always a sign of excess water, a common mistake to avoid with indoor plants.
- Watering: moderate - let the top 3 to 5 cm of substrate dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: approximately once a week in spring and summer, and every 2 weeks in winter.
- Drainage: essential - use a pot with drainage holes and a well-draining substrate.
- Humidity: it thrives in 50–70% ambient humidity; mist occasionally or place it near other plants.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring and summer, use diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants.
- Support: a moss pole or coir pole encourages upward growth and larger leaves.
- Pruning: pinch the stems to encourage a bushier, more branched shape.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
- On a support: guide it upward along a moss pole for a vertical silhouette; the leaves become larger and more deeply cut as it grows taller.
- Hanging: left to trail down from a high shelf, it creates a graphic plant curtain - trailing plants are among the easiest to incorporate into an urban interior.
- Pairs well with: a Monstera Adansonii to combine two types of split foliage in different sizes, or a Golden Pothos for a contrast of textures.
- Ideal pot: matte ceramic (white, grey, terracotta) or a woven basket to showcase the green, deeply split foliage.
Verdeia tips
- Repot it as soon as roots appear through the drainage holes of the pot: its rapid growth quickly depletes the substrate — annual repotting in a slightly larger pot keeps it vigorous and maintains the size of its leaves.
- The brighter the light, the more deeply split the leaves: move it closer to a well-lit window (without direct sun) to achieve the most graphic foliage possible.
- Keep it out of reach of animals: like all Araceae, it contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals and is one of the plants toxic to animals and children.
