Frequently Asked Questions
Does the white passionflower produce fruit? Yes — after flowering, it produces small decorative orange fruits in autumn, edible but not very tasty, mainly appreciated for their ornamental look and by birds.
What is the difference between Passiflora 'Constance Elliot' and the blue Passiflora caerulea? 'Constance Elliot' is a selection with ivory cream-white flowers, slightly more fragrant than the blue caerulea with violet and white filaments — both varieties have the same hardiness and cultural requirements.

🌸 Large exotic ivory flowers with a slight fragrance • 🌿 Persistent dissected foliage • ☀️ Full sun to partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to −8 °C • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
Passiflora caerulea 'Constance Elliot', or White Passionflower, is a tropical climber native to South America, with a rare elegance in its flowering. Its large ivory flowers with spectacular botanical details — radiant filaments, complex crown — bloom from June to September, slightly scented, before giving way to decorative orange fruits in autumn.
Perfectly suited for European terraces and balconies, hardy down to −8 °C — more resilient than most tropical passionflowers.
Which Passionflower Variety to Choose?
The Passiflora genus offers several colors with distinct characters. Here’s how Passiflora 'Constance Elliot' stands out from other varieties in the catalog:
- Passiflora caerulea 'Constance Elliot' (this plant) — large ivory cream-white flowers with a slight fragrance, very hardy down to −8 °C. The most elegant and resilient white version.
- Passiflora caerulea — large blue and white flowers with violet filaments, the classic and most widespread blue variety. Same hardiness.
- Passiflora 'Purple Haze' — spectacular intense violet flowers, very generous flowering. The most flamboyant purple version.
Exposure & Location
The 'Constance Elliot' passionflower enjoys bright, warm spots sheltered from the wind. It flowers more in full sun but tolerates bright partial shade. Its tendrils allow it to climb alone on a trellis or railing — guide the first stems to direct growth.
- Exposure: full sun to bright partial shade — full sun for maximum flowering.
- Support: trellis, arch, fence, or railing.
- Soil: fresh, fertile, and well-drained.
- Hardiness: down to −8 °C — protect the base with mulch in winter.
If the passionflower seems to die back in winter after frost, do not cut the stems — the plant regrows vigorously from the root in spring, even if the aerial parts have frozen.
Watering & Care
The passionflower is undemanding once well established. Water regularly in summer, more sparingly in winter — in a pot, good drainage is essential to avoid root rot. Semi-woody cuttings in summer root easily. If leaves yellow out of season, check drainage and exposure.
- Watering: regular in summer, very sparse in winter.
- Pruning: light in spring to control growth and stimulate flowering branching.
- Fertilizer: potassium-rich in spring to boost flowering.
- Winter protection: thick mulch at the base, frost cloth if prolonged frost below −5 °C.
In pots, slightly elevate the container to avoid stagnant water at the bottom — root rot is the main risk for passionflower in winter.
Decoration Ideas & Plant Combinations
The large ivory flowers of 'Constance Elliot' are botanical sculptures in themselves — their radiant filaments and complex structure create a unique visual effect, very different from all other flowering climbers.
- For a tropical white and fragrant white duo, the evergreen Trachelospermum 'Star of Venice' complements the deciduous passionflower — its evergreen foliage and star-shaped summer flowers dress the support when the passionflower is bare in winter and extend the fragrant white flowering.
- For a spectacular tropical contrast, the purple Passiflora 'Purple Haze' combined with the ivory 'Constance Elliot' creates a very exotic two-tone floral curtain on the same trellis — two passionflowers simultaneously with very contrasting colors.
- For a spring white harmony before flowering, the evergreen Clematis armandii with very fragrant white flowers opens the season in March-April before the passionflower takes over from June to September — two fragrant white climbers in succession.
- To anchor the composition in a tropical style, the evergreen white Honeysuckle 'Halliana' creates a dense dark green background that highlights the spectacular ivory flowers of the passionflower and extends floral scents until September.
Verdeia Tips
- Choose the sunniest and most sheltered location: the passionflower flowers much better in full sun in a warm, wind-protected spot — a favorable exposure largely compensates for harsh winters and guarantees generous flowering from June to September.
- Never prune before spring: even if stems seem dead after frost, wait until March-April — the passionflower almost always regrows from the root and low stems, pruning too early can remove the points of vegetative regrowth.
- Mulch generously at the base in November: a thick 10 cm mulch protects the collar during harsh winters — this is the most frost-sensitive part, and its protection directly conditions vigorous regrowth the following spring.
