Frequently Asked Questions
When should you prune a climbing passionflower? Cut all stems back to 20-30 cm from the ground in March — the passionflower blooms on new shoots and regrows with remarkable vigor as soon as the first warm days arrive.
Can the Purple Haze passionflower be grown in a pot on a balcony? Yes, in a large, well-drained container exposed to full sun, provided you bring the pot indoors or protect it as soon as temperatures drop below -5 °C.

💜 Large violet and white flowers from June to first frost • 🌿 Vigorous and spectacular • ☀️ Full sun • 🌡️ Hardy down to -5 °C • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
The Passiflora 'Purple Haze' is a climbing hybrid native to South America, resulting from the cross of two wild passionflowers: Passiflora caerulea from which it inherited hardiness, and Passiflora amethystina from which it gets its intense violet color. Its large 10 cm graphic flowers — pale mauve crown, bluish violet filaments, yellow-green stamens — are among the most spectacular in the outdoor climbers catalog. From June until the first frosts, it quickly covers balconies, terraces, and pergolas with a tropical and refined decor.
Vigorous, floriferous, and easy to train, it stands out as one of the most accessible exotic climbers to create a terrace jungle in full sun.
Which passionflower to choose?
Verdeia offers three passionflowers with distinct characters. Here’s how to place 'Purple Haze' among the varieties in the catalog:
- Passiflora 'Purple Haze' (this plant) — large violet and white graphic flowers, blooming from June until frost. The most colorful and spectacular variety.
- Passiflora caerulea — classic white and blue flowers, the hardiest of the passionflowers (down to -15 °C). The choice for regions with colder winters.
- Passiflora caerulea 'Constance Elliott' — large, fully white, lightly scented flowers. The choice for a fresh and elegant atmosphere on a pergola or white wall.
Exposure & location
The 'Purple Haze' is a full sun climber — the warmer and brighter the exposure, the more abundant the flowering and the more intense the colors. It tolerates light partial shade but flowers less generously then. A location sheltered from cold winds is essential to extend the season and protect the plant in winter.
- Exposure: full sun — south or west facing, sheltered from cold winds.
- Support: trellis, wire mesh, arch, or pergola — its tendrils cling by themselves to any support.
- Soil: fertile, light, well-drained — tolerates poor soils but not excess moisture.
- In pot: large deep container with good drainage, brought indoors or protected as soon as temperatures drop below -5 °C.
Against a south-facing wall that retains accumulated heat, 'Purple Haze' blooms from June until the first frosts and can even overwinter without protection in Mediterranean or coastal climates.
Watering & maintenance
'Purple Haze' is undemanding once established. The key is to avoid two extremes: soil too dry in summer which slows flowering, and excess water in winter which rots roots. A potassium-rich fertilizer during flowering intensifies colors. To propagate the plant, herbaceous stem cuttings in summer root easily.
- Watering: regular in summer — soil slightly cool but never waterlogged; reduce in winter.
- Pruning: cut back short at the end of winter (March) to trigger vigorous regrowth and dense flowering.
- Fertilizer: rich in potassium from June to September to intensify colors and extend flowering.
- Winter care: protect the base with thick mulch or bring the pot indoors before frost at -5 °C.
- Support: plan a sturdy structure — the passionflower is a very vigorous climber that can reach 5 m in a few seasons.
Prune short and without hesitation in March — even cut back to 20-30 cm from the ground, 'Purple Haze' regrows with remarkable vigor at the first warmth and blooms from June.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The exceptional graphic design of the purple and white flowers of 'Purple Haze' makes it a standout solo on a support, but it also pairs remarkably well with climbers with staggered flowering for a tropical and green terrace throughout the season.
- For a very elegant purple and white duo on a pergola, the Trachelospermum 'Star of Venice' evergreen covers the lower part of the support all year — its shiny green permanent foliage and fragrant white summer flowers create a sober and very refined contrast with the graphic flowers of the passionflower.
- To extend the season with spring flowering, the Clematis 'The President' violet blooms from May to July before the passionflower takes over — the two climbers thus cover the support from May to the first frosts with complementary purple shades.
- For a very dramatic purple and red combination, the Clematis 'Jackmanii' deep purple pairs on the same trellis from July to September — the two simultaneous summer blooms create a dense plant curtain with very spectacular intense purple shades.
- To enhance the exotic look in a pot on a sunny terrace, the Gabriel Bordeaux ceramic pot provides a warm and deep color resonance with the purple flowers — the pot’s intense Bordeaux color reinforces the tropical and passionate identity of this climber.
The 'Purple Haze' naturally attracts bees, bumblebees, and butterflies throughout the summer — place it near a seating area to watch this pollinator ballet alongside its spectacular flowers.
Verdeia tips
- Be sure to plant it against a warm south-facing wall: the heat accumulated by the wall during the day significantly extends the flowering season in autumn and improves winter hardiness — this is the most rewarding spot for this climber, which grows better the warmer the temperature.
- Cut back short every spring without fear of pruning too severely: passionflower blooms on the current year's shoots — severe pruning in March stimulates vigorous regrowth and much denser flowering than a plant left unpruned for several years.
- Mulch generously around the base before winter: 10 to 15 cm of organic mulch insulates the roots from frost and allows the plant to regrow even if the stems have frozen — well-protected crowns always regrow from the following spring.
