Frequently Asked Questions
Why isn’t my Pyracantha producing berries? The most common cause is pruning at the wrong time — before flowering, which removes the flower buds. Too much shade also reduces fruiting. Prune only after flowering in June and ensure a sunny location.
Is Pyracantha dangerous for birds? No — on the contrary, its berries are a valuable food source for birds in winter, especially blackbirds and thrushes. Its dense thorns also provide a natural refuge from predators. It is one of the most beneficial plants for urban wildlife.

🌿 Shiny dark green evergreen foliage • 🟡 Abundant golden yellow berries in autumn-winter • 🐦 Shelter and food for birds • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • ❄️ Very hardy • 🐾 Slightly toxic berries
The Pyracantha 'Soleil d'Or', or Firethorn, is an evergreen shrub native to Southern Europe and Western Asia with long thorns and shiny dark green foliage, covered with spectacular clusters of golden yellow berries in autumn and throughout winter. Traditionally trained as a espalier against a wall or fence, it elegantly and effectively dresses vertical surfaces. H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm at delivery.
Very hardy, honey-producing, bird refuge. Discover it in our Pyracantha collection.
Which Pyracantha variety to choose?
Two Pyracantha varieties are available in our catalog — same growth habit, same care, different berry colors:
- Pyracantha 'Soleil d'Or' (this plant) — bright golden yellow berries. The warmest and most original.
- Pyracantha 'Orange Glow' — abundant bright orange berries. The most classic and berry-rich.
Both varieties combine very well — yellow and orange create a warm and generous composition on the same facade or fence.
Exposure & location
- Ideal exposure: full sun to partial shade — good exposure encourages abundant fruiting.
- Espalier training: ideal against a wall, fence, or trellis — easily fixed with regular tying.
- Hedge: its long thorns make it a very effective defensive hedge.
- Hardiness: very hardy — withstands freezing temperatures without protection.
- Soil: tolerates all well-drained soil types.
When trained as an espalier against a south- or east-facing wall, its golden yellow berries will be especially abundant and bright. Check our spring preparation guide for the right seasonal care.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — drought tolerant once established.
- Pruning: after flowering in June, prune lightly to maintain shape — avoid cutting flowering branches before berries form.
- Tying: regularly tie new shoots to the support to guide espalier growth.
- Fertilizer: minimal — a light application in spring is sufficient.
Wear gloves for any handling — its thorns are long and sharp. Check our care calendar to not miss the post-flowering pruning.
Decoration ideas & plant combinations
Its golden yellow berries persist throughout winter — a precious color when the garden is resting.
- Espalier: against a facade wall, fence, or trellis, it creates a persistent and colorful green screen — elegantly dresses bare vertical surfaces.
- Defensive hedge: its long thorns make it an impenetrable hedge that protects as much as it decorates.
- For birds: its berries are a valuable food source for birds in winter — a plus for urban biodiversity.
- In combination: pair it with a Pyracantha 'Orange Glow' for a spectacular two-tone yellow and orange espalier. Find more inspiration in our balcony and terrace plant selection.
Verdeia tips
- Tie from planting — attach main stems to the support from the start to guide growth in the desired direction. Once stems lignify, they are hard to straighten.
- Do not prune before fruiting — prune after flowering in June, not before. Pruning too early removes flower buds and thus future berries.
- Wear thick gloves — the thorns are long and sharp. An accident with a Pyracantha is always painful. Check our common mistakes guide to avoid usual pitfalls.
- ⚠️ Slightly toxic berries — berries are irritating if ingested in large quantities by humans and animals. Keep out of reach of young children.
