Frequently Asked Questions
When to prune a potted blackcurrant bush? Prune in late winter, February-March, before growth starts. Remove the oldest and woodiest branches at ground level to encourage new productive shoots. Avoid pruning in autumn — flower buds are already formed on 2-3 year old wood and you would remove the future harvest.
Can the blackcurrant bush stay outside in winter? Yes, the Little Black Sugar blackcurrant is very hardy and withstands temperatures down to -20°C. It can stay in a pot on a balcony or terrace all year round without protection. Only protect the flowers from late frosts in April-May with a frost cloth if negative temperatures are forecast.

🫐 Sweet and aromatic blackcurrants • 🌿 Certified organic cultivation • 🌸 Nectar-rich flowering April-May • ☀️ Full sun to partial shade • 💧 Regular watering • 📏 H50 cm | Pot Ø23 cm • ❄️ Very hardy -20°C • 🐾 Non-toxic
The Blackcurrant 'Little Black Sugar' Organic is a compact fruit shrub grown organically. It produces generous clusters of sweet and aromatic blackcurrants in July-August, preceded by a nectar-rich flowering in April-May that attracts pollinators. Its compact size and bushy habit make it an ideal choice for pot cultivation on a balcony or terrace.
Very hardy, easy to care for, and certified organic — it is one of the most productive plants in our fruit and aromatic plant selection. Also discover it in our urban vegetable garden collection.
Exposure & location
The Blackcurrant 'Little Black Sugar' is a hardy shrub that adapts to various conditions — but the quantity and quality of the fruits depend directly on the exposure.
- Ideal exposure: full sun to partial shade — south, east, or west-facing balcony or terrace.
- In full sun: sweeter fruits and more abundant production.
- In partial shade: decent production but less sweet fruits.
- Substrate: rich, fresh, and well-drained — potting soil for fruit trees or enriched universal potting soil.
- Pot: minimum Ø30 cm for good root development.
- Hardiness: Very hardy down to -20 °C — can stay outdoors all year round.
A sunny exposure in the morning is ideal — morning warmth promotes fruiting and reduces the risk of fungal diseases related to nighttime humidity.
Watering & care
- Watering: regular — keep the substrate moist, especially during flowering and fruiting.
- Frequency: about 2 times per week in spring-summer, reduced in autumn-winter.
- Drainage: a pot with drainage holes is essential — blackcurrants do not tolerate standing water.
- Fertilizer: organic fruit tree fertilizer once in spring, after flowering.
- Pruning: light pruning in late winter (February-March) to open the center and stimulate fruiting — remove the oldest and woodiest branches.
- Harvest: July-August, pick the clusters when the berries are fully black and come off easily.
A lack of water during berry formation causes premature dropping or small, less sweet fruits. Keep watering regularly from flowering to harvest.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The 'Little Black Sugar' Blackcurrant is as decorative as it is productive — white flowers in spring, fresh green foliage in summer, clusters of black berries in July-August.
- In an urban vegetable garden: pair it with an organic raspberry or an organic red currant for a productive terrace with a harvest spread throughout the season. Discover our ideas in our balconies and terraces selection.
- With herbs: mint, thyme, or basil at the base complement the arrangement and maximize pot space.
- Ideal pot: large terracotta, ceramic, or recycled plastic pot (minimum Ø30 cm) for optimal root development.
Its clusters of blackcurrants elegantly contrast with the fresh green foliage — a decorative and delicious effect that changes with the seasons.
Verdeia Tips
- Water more during fruiting — a lack of water from flowering to harvest is the main cause of small, less sweet fruits or fruits that fall before ripening. Keep the substrate consistently moist from May to August.
- Prune at the end of winter, not in autumn — flower buds form on 2- to 3-year-old wood. Autumn pruning risks removing future flowers. Wait until February-March to thin the center and remove the oldest wood.
- Use only organic fertilizer — certified organic farming, it deserves consistent fertilization. An organic fruit tree fertilizer in spring is sufficient — no chemical fertilization.
- Protect flowers from late frost — the April-May flowering can be affected by late frosts. When cold weather is forecast during flowering, cover with a frost cloth at night.
- 🐝 Melliferous and beneficial for biodiversity — its spring flowering is one of the first resources for pollinators after winter. When combined with other fruit trees, it actively contributes to the biodiversity of your balcony.
- 🐾 Non-toxic — the blackcurrant and its fruits are safe for dogs and cats.
