Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Cycas revoluta stay outside in summer? Yes, it enjoys warmth and direct summer sun as long as it is brought indoors before the first frosts — it tolerates cool temperatures down to 5 °C but not prolonged freezing.
Why are the fronds of my Cycas revoluta turning yellow? Yellowing fronds are almost always due to overwatering or lack of light — check that the soil is dry before watering and move the plant closer to a bright light source.

🌴 Living fossil of 200 million years • ☀️ Bright light to direct sunlight • 💧 Moderate watering • 🌿 Pinnate fronds in a symmetrical crown • 🐾 Toxic to pets
Native to Japan and southern China, the Cycas revoluta is a true living fossil whose ancestors roamed the Earth over 200 million years ago, long before flowering plants appeared. It is not a palm but a primitive cycad—a distinct plant lineage that produces cones instead of flowers. Its shiny dark green pinnate fronds arranged in a symmetrical crown around a thick, scaly trunk make it one of the most historically rich collector plants, alongside other equally remarkable species in our original and rare plants collection.
Its extremely slow growth—a new crown of fronds each year—and exceptional longevity make it a valuable collector’s plant, to be considered a true long-term botanical investment.
Exposure & Location
- Exposure: bright light to direct sunlight for a few hours a day—the more abundant the light, the more compact and vigorous the new fronds will be. For less bright spaces, our large XXL plants offer more shade-tolerant alternatives.
- Ideal: bright living room, sunroom, balcony, or sheltered terrace during warm seasons.
- Temperature: 15 to 27 °C — tolerates cool temperatures down to 5 °C.
- Substrate: very well-drained and rich—potting soil for green plants mixed with sand and perlite.
Watering & Care
- Watering: moderate—allow the top 3 to 5 cm of substrate to dry out between waterings. Excess water causes irreversible trunk rot, a common mistake among frequent indoor plant errors.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring and summer, greatly reduced in winter.
- Drainage: essential—pot with drainage holes and very well-draining substrate.
- Humidity: perfectly tolerates dry air—no need for misting.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring and summer, diluted balanced liquid fertilizer.
Decor Ideas & Plant Combinations
- Solo: its architectural silhouette in a symmetrical crown stands on its own—place it alone in a bright corner of a living room or sunroom to make it the centerpiece of the space.
- Large format compositions: pair it with a Strelitzia nicolai with large paddle-shaped leaves and a Zamioculcas with shiny foliage—three radically different shapes that complement each other in a structured tropical arrangement, as detailed in our article large indoor plants: which to choose.
- Ideal pot: a Brussels anthracite or a Bfor soft anthracite highlights the brown scaly trunk and dark green fronds through contrasting texture and color.
Verdeia Tips
- Never cut green fronds: only remove fronds that are completely dry and brown at the base—cutting a still green frond creates a permanent scar and deprives the plant of photosynthetic energy.
- Repot only every 3 to 5 years: its very slow growth means it depletes substrate slowly—wait until roots appear under the pot before repotting into very well-draining substrate.
- Move it outdoors to the balcony or terrace starting in spring: direct sun and summer heat stimulate the production of the annual new crown of fronds—Cycas shows its best vigor outdoors; bring it inside before the first cool nights below 10 °C.

What to do upon receiving my plant?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
