Frequently Asked Questions
Can a red rose bush survive winter in a pot? In a pot, roots are more vulnerable to frost than in the ground — protect it with a frost cloth or bring it indoors to a cool, bright place as soon as temperatures consistently drop below 0 °C.
How to plant a rose bush in a pot in the ground? Place it directly into the soil, with the original pot slightly buried below ground level, then water thoroughly during the first week to encourage root establishment.

🌹 Deep burgundy double flowers • ☀️ Full sun • 💧 Regular watering • 🌸 Generous flowering • 📏 H45 cm | Pot Ø17 cm
This Red Rose is a compact rose with deep burgundy double flowers carried in dense clusters above shiny dark green foliage. It is delivered in full bloom with many buds — a plant that blooms immediately and flowers again all summer through autumn.
A universal symbol of love and passion, the red rose is also one of the most generous outdoor plants in bloom. In a pot on a balcony or planted directly in the ground, it brings color and fragrance throughout the beautiful season. It is also one of the most meaningful plant gifts — for a special occasion or simply to bring color.
Which rose color to choose?
Here are the roses available in our catalog to help you choose according to your desires:
- Red Rose (this plant) — deep burgundy double flowers, dense flowering in clusters. The most intense and symbolic.
- Pale Pink Rose — soft and romantic pink flowers, compact form. The most delicate and romantic.
- White Rose — pure and bright white flowers. The cleanest and brightest.
- Climbing Rose Red 'Crazy in Love' — climbing rose with large red flowers, slender form H65 cm. The climbing version for trellis or espalier.
- Climbing Rose Pink 'Crazy in Love' — climbing rose with large pink flowers. The romantic climbing version.
- Climbing Rose Cream 'Crazy in Love' — climbing rose with cream and soft pink flowers. The most elegant in warm tones.
Red is the color that stands out best from a distance — ideal for a balcony or terrace visible from the street or from inside an apartment.
Exposure & location
The Red Rose blooms all the more generously when it receives light — at least 5 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day are necessary for abundant and continuous flowering. Below that, it blooms but less intensely and becomes more susceptible to diseases.
- Ideal exposure: full sun — balcony, terrace, or windowsill facing south or west.
- Tolerates: light partial shade with at least 4 to 5 hours of sun.
- To avoid: full shade which stops flowering, cold drafts.
- Hardiness: hardy down to −5 °C in pots — protect from severe frost in winter.
- Substrate: rich and well-draining — quality universal potting soil or special rose bush soil.
Avoid watering in the evening — wet leaves left damp overnight promote powdery mildew and rust, the two most common fungal diseases on potted rose bushes.
Watering & care
Potted rose bushes dry out faster than those in the ground — check the substrate regularly, especially during hot periods. To properly welcome your rose bush upon arrival, follow our new plant care guide.
- Watering: regular — keep the substrate slightly moist without soaking it.
- Frequency: about every 2 to 3 days in midsummer; reduce significantly in winter.
- Technique: always water at the base — never on the leaves or flowers.
- Drainage: essential — pot must have drainage holes, empty the saucer after each watering.
- Fertilizer: special fertilizer for rose bushes or flowering plants, every 2 weeks from March to September.
Remove faded flowers as soon as they wilt by cutting just above the first leaf with 5 leaflets — this is the most effective way to trigger a new wave of buds.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The deep red of the flowers creates a striking contrast with any light background — white wall, balcony tiles, green or silver foliage. To create a cohesive flowering outdoor space, check out our ideas to green your space.
- Solo on a sunny balcony: place it in a Brussels anthracite decorative pot — the contrast between the red flowers and the anthracite gray is especially elegant and contemporary.
- In a trio of rose bushes: pair it with the Pale Pink Rose Bush and the White Rose Bush for a red, pink, and white trio — same size, same care, extended bouquet effect all summer long.
- In floral combinations: pair it with a Lavender Hidcote Blue — lavender blue and burgundy red are complementary colors that intensify each other, and lavender naturally repels aphids.
- Decorative pot and color scheme: the burgundy red also stands out on a white background — a white Greenville decorative pot creates a sharp graphic contrast and highlights each flower individually.
Turn the pot a quarter turn every 2 weeks so all sides receive light evenly and achieve uniform flowering on all sides.
Verdeia tips
- Prune short after the first flowering: as soon as the first wave fades, cut back the stems by one third — the second flowering that follows is usually denser than the first.
- Overwinter by protecting it from severe frost: below −5 °C, bring the pot indoors to a cool, bright place or wrap it in frost cloth — potted roots are much more vulnerable to frost than those in the ground.
- Plant it in the ground in spring for maximum longevity: place it directly in the soil, with the original pot slightly buried, and water abundantly the first week — in the ground, the rose can live and bloom for decades.
Lavender planted near a rose naturally repels aphids thanks to its scent — a functional as well as decorative combination.
