Frequently Asked Questions
How cold-hardy is it? It withstands temperatures down to around -10 °C. When grown in a pot, in regions where winter temperatures drop lower, shelter it under an awning or in a bright, unheated room during severe cold spells.
Can it be grown in a pot? Yes, it remains compact, reaching around 30 to 40 cm. Choose a well-draining growing medium: it is mainly susceptible to stagnant moisture in winter.

🍃 Blue-green foliage marbled with cream • 🌸 Cup-shaped cream-green flowers washed with purple • 📅 Flowering from January to April • ⛅ Partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to -10 °C • 🪴 Compact habit, ideal for growing in a pot
Helleborus lividus 'Purple Marble' is a selection of Majorcan hellebore, a species recognised first and foremost by its foliage. Native to Majorca (Balearic Islands), it is an evergreen perennial that retains its appeal all year round on partially shaded balconies and terraces, even outside the flowering period.
Its leathery leaves, divided into three toothed leaflets, are blue-green and veined with silvery cream, borne on reddish stems. From January to April, it produces cup-shaped cream-green flowers washed with rosy purple, which tilt slightly above the foliage.
Which hellebore should you choose?
Nine hellebores in the catalogue, taking turns throughout winter:
- Majorcan hellebore 'Purple Marble' (this plant) — cream-green single flowers washed with purple, from January to April. Blue-green foliage marbled with cream.
- Christmas rose 'Christmas Carol' — pure white single flowers, from late October to March. The earliest.
- Christmas rose 'Diamonfire' — cream-white and green single flowers with dusty pink highlights, from December to March. The most vigorous, flowering in clusters on red stems.
- Hellebore 'Angel Glow' — frosty pink single flowers that turn deep pink and green, from December to March. The flowers with the most changeable colours.
- Lenten rose 'Dacaya' — medium-pink single flowers streaked with burgundy, from February to April. The most flowering, supplied as a large clump.
- Lenten rose 'Double Ellen Pink' — pale pink double flowers speckled with purple, from February to April. The most nuanced.
- Lenten rose 'Double Ellen White' — snow-white double flowers, from February to April. The brightest in the shade.
- Lenten rose 'Double Ellen Red' — burgundy-purple double flowers, from February to April. The most intense.
- Silver 'Silver Dollar' Hellebore - single cream-green flowers with a yellow centre, from February to April. The most silvery foliage.
Christmas roses and Lenten roses, such as Angel Glow, tolerate intense cold; hellebores with marbled or silvery foliage are chosen for a sheltered balcony.
Exposure & location
In Majorca, the species grows among rocks and at the edge of scrubland: it needs more light than the Lenten rose, but not the scorching summer sun, and above all a spot sheltered from winter rain.
- Exposure: partial shade, morning sun or filtered light.
- Location: covered balcony, east-facing terrace, at the foot of a wall beneath a roof overhang.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -10 °C - below that, bring it indoors to a bright, unheated room.
- Soil type: rich in humus and very well drained, neutral to alkaline.
The foliage marbling is more contrasted in bright light: avoid deep shade, where the leaves turn green.
Watering & care
More than thirst, it is excess water that threatens it: testing the substrate with your finger before each watering helps prevent the roots from drowning, while a substrate lightened with perlite or clay pebbles drains the water in winter.
- Watering: moderate - when the top of the substrate is dry in spring and summer, very sparingly in winter.
- Water: tap water is suitable.
- Fertiliser: apply organic fertiliser in autumn.
- Pruning: remove only damaged leaves and spent stems in spring - the foliage is what makes the plant special.
- Repotting: the following spring, in a pot that is only slightly wider, with a drainage layer at the bottom.
Wear gloves when pruning: hellebore sap can irritate the skin.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its cream-veined blue-grey foliage works more as a foliage plant than a flowering plant: choosing its neighbours according to the exposure allows you to pair it with plants with the same needs.
- For a foliage arrangement, pair it with a Korean Fern - its dark, glossy green brings out the leaves' light marbling.
- To dress the edge of the pot, plant a Carex 'Ice Dance' — its cream edging echoes the veins of the foliage, with a fine texture that contrasts with the leathery leaves.
- For elevated winter flowering, place a Laurustinus beside it — evergreen, it flowers from November to March and creates a dark green backdrop behind the clump.
- To enhance the pot, choose the Capi Nature Skin anthracite pot — the dark grey makes the cream marbling and red stems appear brighter.
Cut and floated in a bowl of water, the purple-green flowers reveal their centre, which cannot be seen on the drooping flowers.
Verdeia tips
- Protect it below -10 °C: in a pot, the roots freeze more quickly than in the ground. Bring it indoors for a few days to a garage or an unheated conservatory during cold spells; our guide to cold-hardy plants helps you create a winter balcony suited to your region.
- Protect it from winter rain: waterlogged soil in cold weather causes the crown to rot. Under an overhanging roof, it will get through winter without any problems.
- Do not cut back all the foliage in winter: unlike the Lenten rose, its leaves remain beautiful during flowering and provide all the visual appeal.
