Frequently Asked Questions
Can you plant a climbing honeysuckle in the shade? Lonicera henryi is the most shade-tolerant honeysuckle — it blooms and keeps its shiny leaves even in north or east-facing spots, where other varieties refuse to grow.
When should you prune an evergreen honeysuckle? Prune Lonicera henryi only at the end of winter, never in autumn — autumn pruning would remove flower buds and expose the stems to late frosts in March-April.

🌿 Evergreen dark green foliage all year round • 🌸 Fragrant orange-pink flowers from May to August • 🐝 Bee-friendly • ❄️ Hardy down to –15 °C • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
Lonicera henryi, or Henry's honeysuckle, is a perennial climbing vine native to China, distinguished from all other honeysuckles by its evergreen, glossy dark green foliage — a rare decorative asset that provides plant coverage all year round, even in winter. Its fragrant orange-pink tubular flowers from May to August make it one of the most versatile climbers in the outdoor climbing plant collection.
Vigorous, undemanding and suitable for both pots and open ground, it is the ideal choice for permanently dressing a wall, fence or pergola on a balcony or terrace without ever losing its foliage.
Which honeysuckle should you choose?
The Verdeia climbing plant collection features four honeysuckles with distinct characteristics. Here's how to position Lonicera henryi among the varieties in the catalogue:
- Lonicera henryi (this plant) — glossy dark green evergreen foliage, fragrant orange-pink flowers from May to August. The choice for a permanent green screen all year round.
- Lonicera periclymenum 'Serotina' — dark pink and cream flowers, very intense fragrance in the evening, flowering from June to September. The most fragrant variety, with deciduous foliage.
- Lonicera periclymenum 'Belgica' — pale pink and white flowers, early flowering from May to July, delicate fragrance. The choice for a soft, spring-like atmosphere.
- Lonicera japonica 'Halliana' — white flowers turning yellow, gentle fragrance, semi-evergreen foliage. The most spreading and fastest-growing variety for concealing a fence.
Exposure & placement
Lonicera henryi is the most shade-tolerant of the honeysuckles — it grows in full sun as well as light shade, making it particularly valuable for challenging exposures. Its evergreen foliage ensures visual coverage in every season, including winter when other climbers are bare.
- Exposure: full sun, partial shade or light shade — less flowering in deep shade, but the foliage remains decorative.
- Support: trellis, pergola, fence, wall - the stems twine around on their own with initial training.
- Soil: fertile, moist and well-drained - tolerates most garden soils.
- In a pot: large container at least 30 cm wide, with more frequent watering than when planted in the ground.
Plant it with the base in the shade - a tile placed on the ground or ground cover at the base keeps the roots cool and significantly stimulates flowering in summer.
Watering & care
Once well established, Lonicera henryi is very self-sufficient. During the first year, keep the soil regularly moist - the finger test deep down is the best guide. Yellowing leaves outside winter often indicate a substrate that is too dry or lacking nutrients.
- Watering: regular during the first year - moderate thereafter, with very infrequent watering in winter.
- Pruning: light pruning at the end of winter to remove dead stems and open up the framework - avoid severe pruning, which would remove the flower buds.
- Fertilizer: adding compost around the base in spring is enough to support flowering.
- Hardiness: down to –15 °C - no protection needed in the ground.
Unlike deciduous honeysuckles, do not cut Lonicera henryi back severely - its evergreen foliage recovers slowly after overly heavy pruning.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The glossy, dark green evergreen foliage of Lonicera henryi forms a stable plant backdrop all year round, highlighting seasonal-flowering plants - it acts as a backdrop in an outdoor jungle or as a structuring screen in a Mediterranean garden.
- For a fragrant two-season living wall, pair it with Lonicera 'Serotina' on the same support - henryi provides an evergreen green backdrop in winter, while 'Serotina' takes over with its highly fragrant pink flowers from June to September.
- For a pergola with three seasons of flowering, combine it with Passiflora caerulea - the passion flower's graphic blue flowers (June-September) contrast with henryi's pink-orange flowers (May-August) against a backdrop of evergreen foliage.
- To quickly cover a north- or east-facing fence, Lonicera henryi is the only climbing plant in the catalog capable of covering a shaded area while flowering — no other honeysuckle or jasmine tolerates as much shade.
- In a pot on a north- or east-facing balcony, a large anthracite gray ceramic pot visually anchors the base of the vine and creates a sharp contrast between the dark container and the glossy green foliage, which remains attractive all year round.
The foliage of Lonicera henryi turns slightly red in cold winters before turning green again in spring — this seasonal color change adds extra decorative interest to north-facing façades.
Verdeia tips
- Train it from planting to guide its framework: the first stems secured in the right direction form the plant's permanent structure — a well-oriented framework from the outset prevents a tangle that would be difficult to untangle after two or three growing seasons.
- Prune only at the end of winter, never in autumn: the evergreen foliage protects the flower buds in winter — autumn pruning would remove future flowers and expose the stems to late frosts in March-April.
- Add compost around the base every spring instead of mineral fertilizer: compost releases its nutrients slowly and improves the soil structure over time, which stimulates the growth of new stems and foliage density more effectively than an application of concentrated fertilizer.
