🌿 Spectacular red veins • 🌙 Leaves fold at night • ☀️ Low light • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H30 cm | Pot Ø12 cm • 🐾 Non-toxic
The Maranta Leuconeura 'Fascinator', also called Prayer Plant or Sleepy Plant, is a tropical plant native to the humid undergrowth of Brazil. Its dark green foliage with bright red veins creates a striking graphic pattern — but it’s its behavior that makes it truly unique: every evening, its leaves rise and fold like praying hands, then unfold again at dawn.
Among the low-light tolerant plants, it is one of the most decorative — and one of the few entirely non-toxic for pets. Ideal for an office, bedroom, or a low-exposure shelf.
Which Maranta variety to choose?
All Marantas share the same nyctinastic movement — it’s the leaf pattern that distinguishes them. Here are the varieties available in our collection:
- Maranta Leuconeura 'Fascinator' (this plant) — dark green leaves with very pronounced bright red veins. The most graphic and contrasting.
- Maranta 'Fascinator Lemon Lime' — bicolor leaves in lime green and dark green with red veins. The brightest and most colorful.
- Maranta Leuconeura Kerchoveana — light green leaves with symmetrical brown spots, without red veins. The softest and most classic.
- Kokodama Maranta Mix — 3 Marantas suspended in moss balls, ready to display. The turnkey decorative pot version.
The Fascinator is the most popular variety — its red veins immediately stand out against the dark green and create the strongest contrast in the family.
Exposure & location
The Maranta Leuconeura naturally grows under tropical forest cover, away from any direct sunlight. It is one of the indoor plants best suited for low-light spaces.
- Ideal exposure: moderate to low indirect light — north-facing window, room away from windows, interior office.
- Tolerates: relative shade — but leaf movement will be less noticeable without enough light.
- Avoid: direct sunlight that fades the foliage and dries out the substrate too quickly.
- Temperature: 18–25 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
- Substrate: light, rich, and well-drained — universal potting soil with 20% perlite.
If the leaves no longer fold up in the evening, it’s often due to lack of light — move the plant to a slightly brighter spot and observe its behavior over the following days.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — keep the substrate slightly moist without ever letting it become soggy.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring and summer, slightly reduced in winter.
- Water: non-calcareous water is essential — filtered, rainwater, or water left to stand for 24 hours. Hard water causes brown edges on leaves.
- Humidity: prefers 60–70% humidity — mist regularly or group with other plants.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring and summer with diluted liquid green plant fertilizer.
- Cleaning: gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to preserve the brightness of the veins.
Brown edges on leaves are almost always due to hard water or dry air — rarely a watering issue. Start by changing the water before adjusting watering frequency.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The Maranta 'Fascinator' brings movement and life where most plants remain still. Placed in a low-light corner, it enlivens the space on its own.
- On a desk or shelf: in a matte white or terracotta ceramic decorative pot, it creates a graphic and lively focal point in a workspace.
- In the bathroom: natural humidity suits it perfectly — it’s one of the few decorative plants adapted to this environment.
- In arrangements: pair it with a Calathea or a Peperomia for a contrast of patterns and textures in a low-light corner.
Watch it in the evening — the movement of the leaves rising is a spectacle in itself, especially visible in soft lighting.
Verdeia Tips
- Calcareous water is its main enemy — the characteristic brown edges are not a sign of overwatering but a reaction to lime and fluoride in tap water. Switch to filtered water or water left to stand overnight before use.
- Maintain ambient humidity — native to humid tropical undergrowth, it suffers from the dry air of heated apartments in winter. Mist the foliage 2 to 3 times a week or place the pot on a bed of moist clay pebbles.
- Never let the substrate dry out completely — unlike succulents, Maranta needs a substrate that is constantly slightly moist. Too dry substrate causes leaf curling and brown edges.
- Leaf movement is a health indicator — a plant that closes well in the evening and unfolds in the morning is a happy plant. If the movement stops, check light and humidity first.
- Repot in spring into a wide, shallow decorative pot — Maranta has shallow roots. A pot that is too deep retains too much moisture at the bottom and promotes root rot.
- 🐾 Non-toxic — Maranta is completely safe for dogs and cats. One of the few graphic tropical plants that is pet-friendly — find more ideas in our pet-friendly selection.
