Frequently Asked Questions
Can the 'Black Satin' mulberry grow in a pot on a balcony? Yes, in a container at least 30 cm in diameter with a sturdy support — its semi-climbing stems reach 1.5 to 2 meters and need a trellis or fence to grow properly.
Why choose a thornless mulberry instead of a classic mulberry? Handling, pruning, and harvesting can be done without the risk of pricks — a decisive advantage for balconies frequented by children or in spaces where the plant is often accessed.

🍇 Large shiny sweet blackberries • 🌿 Thornless • ☀️ Full sun to partial shade • ❄️ Very hardy • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H45 cm | Pot Ø13 cm
The Rubus fruticosus 'Black Satin' is an organic blackberry with a vigorous growth habit and no thorns, known for the quality and abundance of its fruit. Its large shiny sweet blackberries are harvested in mid-summer and can be enjoyed fresh from the plant or made into homemade jam.
Its special feature: the complete absence of thorns, making it ideal for family balconies and terraces — handling, pruning, and harvesting without risk of pricks.
Exposure & Location
The 'Black Satin' blackberry enjoys light and warmth while tolerating cold well. The sunnier the exposure, the sweeter and more abundant the fruit. Its flexible semi-climbing stems need support to develop properly.
- Exposure: full sun to partial shade — full sun for sweeter fruit.
- Support: trellis, fence, arch, or barrier to guide the long flexible stems.
- Substrate: rich, fresh, and well-drained.
- In a pot: container at least 30 cm in diameter with support for the stems.
Guide the stems as they grow by tying them to the support — blackberry stems quickly become long and hard to manage once woody.
Watering & Care
The blackberry prefers a fresh but well-drained soil — it does not tolerate standing water, which promotes root diseases. Water regularly during flowering and fruit formation, and apply an organic fertilizer in spring to support fruiting.
- Watering: regular during growth and fruiting — substrate fresh but never waterlogged.
- Mulching: organic mulch at the base to retain moisture and reduce watering.
- Pruning: in winter, remove stems that have fruited — only new shoots from the current year will produce next season’s fruit.
- Fertilizer: compost or natural fertilizer in spring.
Good drainage is key — a constantly waterlogged substrate causes root rot and a sharp drop in fruit production.
Decor Ideas & Plant Combinations
The 'Black Satin' blackberry combines beauty and deliciousness: dense deep green foliage, white flowers in summer, and large shiny blackberries — three decorative and edible assets in one shrub.
- For a complete mini urban orchard, pair it with the Organic Raspberry 'Malling Promise' — red raspberries and blackberries are harvested at slightly different times for continuous small fruit production all summer.
- To add currants to the harvest, the Organic Red Currant 'Jonkheer van Tets' is an ideal companion — its bright red clusters complement the blackberries in a very decorative two-tone fruit composition.
- For a thornless blackberry duo, the Blackberry 'Thornless Evergreen' offers a second thornless variety with semi-evergreen foliage — both varieties produce at slightly different times to spread out the harvest.
- To enrich with a large exotic fruit, the Organic Self-fertile Kiwi 'Jenny' adds a climbing and graphic dimension — its large leaves and velvety fruits contrast with the small shiny blackberries for a very varied terrace vegetable garden.
Verdeia Tips
- Prune only stems that have already fruited: the blackberry fruits on last year’s shoots — remove in winter the stems that bore fruit and keep the new green shoots that will produce next season.
- Install support before planting: 'Black Satin' stems grow fast and become long and heavy — a trellis or sturdy fence installed from the start avoids having to reorganize everything with an already developed plant.
- Renew the substrate every 2 years: in a pot, a spring repotting into a rich fresh substrate immediately boosts vigor and fruiting — the blackberry quickly depletes the soil in containers.

What to do upon receiving my plant?
