Frequently Asked Questions
Does the spider plant really purify the air? Yes, it is among the plants studied by NASA for their ability to filter formaldehyde, xylene, and benzene present in indoor air.
Why do the tips of the spider plant leaves turn brown? It is almost always a sign of excess lime in the watering the water or air that is too dry; prefer rain or filtered the water.

🌿 Deep green ribboned foliage edged with cream • 🌱 Produces trailing offshoots • ☀️ Bright indirect light to partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H25 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
Chlorophytum comosum 'Ocean' — also called Ocean Spider Plant — displays deep green ribboned foliage edged with a fine cream border, forming a dense, slightly trailing clump. Native to South Africa, it is one of the most well-known air-purifying plants, studied by NASA for its ability to filter formaldehyde, xylene, and benzene from indoor air.
Delivered in its brown stone-effect ceramic pot, it is ready to place on a shelf, console, or low furniture where its trailing offshoots can spread. A pet-safe plant for cats and dogs, ideal as a gift or a first indoor plant.
Light & Location
The Chlorophytum Ocean is one of the most light-tolerant indoor plants. It enjoys bright indirect light that highlights the green-cream contrast of its ribbons but also adapts well to bright partial shade. Prolonged direct sun should be avoided in summer as it fades the foliage and can burn leaf tips.
- Light: bright indirect to bright partial shade — avoid prolonged direct sun.
- Location: shelf, console, low furniture, hanging, bright bathroom — perfect to showcase trailing offshoots.
- Temperature: 15 to 25 °C — can tolerate 10 °C briefly, protected from cold drafts.
- Soil type: light, well-draining universal potting mix with some sand or perlite added.
The cream variegation becomes more pronounced in bright indirect light; in low light, new leaves tend to revert to solid green — a useful visual cue to adjust placement.
Watering & Care
Chlorophytum stores reserves in its fleshy tuberous roots, making it especially tolerant of missed waterings. In spring and summer, water moderately when the soil surface starts to dry. In winter, water sparingly. The offshoots (young plantlets at the end of flower stems) root with surprising ease: just place them on moist substrate or in a glass of water and they will root within days.
- Watering: moderate in spring and summer, as soon as the substrate surface dries — spaced out in autumn and winter.
- Drainage: essential — the included ceramic pot has no hole, so empty excess water after each watering by tilting the container slightly.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants once a month in spring and summer only.
- Pruning: cut damaged leaves at the base and remove faded flower stems if you do not want to keep the offshoots.
- Repotting: every 2 years in spring into a pot just slightly larger — fleshy roots quickly fill the container.
If leaf tips brown, it is almost always due to excess lime in the water or dry air — prefer rain or filtered water and occasionally increase ambient humidity.
Decor Ideas & Plant Pairings
The upright clump form and trailing offshoots of Chlorophytum Ocean make it a natural candidate for indoor trailing plant arrangements, enlivened by the graphic note of its cream-edged ribboned foliage.
- For a bright trailing trio on a shelf, pair it with a Golden Pothos with yellow-green heart-shaped leaves and a Peperomia Rotundifolia with small fleshy leaves — three distinct foliage types, three graphic rhythms, same water needs for a cohesive shelf display.
- For an air-purifying duo in bedroom or office, place the Chlorophytum next to a Spathiphyllum Bingo Cupido with dark green leaves and white flowers — two NASA references for air purification, a dialogue between cream ribbons and immaculate spathes.
- For a graphic hanging display, add nearby a Ceropegia woodii string of hearts above the Chlorophytum — the long heart-shaped vines of Ceropegia complement the trailing offshoots for a very natural leafy curtain effect.
- To highlight the brown stone-effect ceramic pot, place the plant on a wooden saucer or a woven rush mat — natural material warms the mineral finish of the container and enhances the tropical note of the variegated foliage without distracting from it.
Let the offshoots trail over the edge of the furniture: their small plantlets at stem tips create a very decorative cascading effect, and each can be propagated to gift or enrich another arrangement.
Verdeia Tips
- Use offshoots to multiply the plant: each flower stem produces small plantlets with their own roots — cut them and plant directly in soil or water to get a new plant in a few weeks, perfect for gifting.
- Watch the ceramic pot drainage: this holeless ceramic container is very decorative but requires special care — gently tilt it after each watering to drain excess water collected at the bottom, or place a layer of clay pebbles at the bottom before repotting.
- Prefer rain or filtered water: Chlorophytum is sensitive to lime and chlorine which brown leaf tips — letting tap water rest for 24 hours before watering is enough to preserve the beauty of the variegated foliage.
