Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Calathea Crocata bloom again every year? Yes, it generally blooms once or twice a year depending on care conditions — sufficient indirect light, high humidity, and regular fertilization in spring encourage the bracts to reappear.
Why do the leaves of my Calathea Crocata have brown edges? Browning edges are almost always caused by hard water or dry air — switch to filtered or rainwater and increase ambient humidity by misting 2 to 3 times a week.

🌿 Velvety dark green foliage • 🌸 Spectacular bright orange flowers • ☀️ Partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H40 cm | Pot Ø14 cm
Calathea Crocata, also called Flame Plant, is a unique plant in the Calathea genus — the only variety to produce flowers: spectacular bright orange bracts that emerge above velvety dark green foliage with a deep purple underside. A standout piece in our Calathea collection.
Native to the tropical forests of Brazil, Calathea crocata naturally grows in humid, shaded undergrowth. Like all Calatheas, its leaves fold at night and unfold during the day — a fascinating movement linked to the life cycles of indoor plants. Non-toxic to pets and children.
Which Calathea variety to choose?
The Calathea genus offers a great diversity of patterns and textures — here is how Calathea Crocata stands out from other varieties in the catalog:
- Calathea Crocata (this plant) — velvety dark green foliage, purple underside, spectacular bright orange flowers. The only variety with colorful flowering.
- Calathea Warscewiczii — velvety dark green foliage with drawn patterns, purple underside, majestic posture. The velvety version without flowering.
- Calathea Ornata — dark green leaves striped with very graphic pink. The most elegant pink version.
- Calathea Majestica 'Princeps' — elongated dark green leaves with spectacular pink stripes, purple underside. The royal and graphic version.
- Calathea Orbifolia — large round leaves with very bright silver stripes. The XXL silver version.
- Calathea Makoyana — leaves with complex stained glass effect patterns, purple underside. The artistic version.
- Calathea Lancifolia 'Insignis' — elongated leaves spotted with dark green on a light green background. The elongated graphic version.
Exposure & location
The Calathea Crocata thrives in Partial shade — soft, consistent indirect light is enough to maintain its foliage and encourage flowering. The light-humidity balance is the key to success with all Calatheas.
- Exposure: Partial shade to soft indirect light — avoid direct sun that burns and fades the velvety leaves.
- Ideal: living room, office, bedroom, or bright bathroom without direct sunlight.
- Temperature: 18 to 25 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
- Substrate: light, rich, and well-draining — universal potting soil mixed with perlite.
A bright bathroom is an ideal location — the natural humidity after showers suits Calathea Crocata perfectly and extends its flowering period.
Watering & care
Calathea Crocata is sensitive to water quality — lime causes brown spots on the edges of the velvety leaves. Preferably use filtered water or water left to rest overnight, as recommended in our complete watering guide.
- Watering: moderate — keep the substrate slightly moist without ever letting it become soggy.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring-summer, slightly reduced in winter.
- Water: preferably non-calcareous water — filtered or rainwater to avoid brown edges.
- Drainage: essential — use a pot with drainage holes and well-draining substrate.
- Humidity: prefers 60–70% humidity — mist regularly or place near other plants.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring-summer with a diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants.
Gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to preserve their velvety texture — dust accumulates in the fibers and dulls the deep dark green of the foliage.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
With its bright orange flowers and velvety dark green foliage, the Calathea Crocata is the only Calathea to bring a true touch of floral color to indoor tropical arrangements.
- Create a trio of movement plants by pairing the Calathea Crocata with a Maranta Leuconeura Fascinator and a Calathea Warscewiczii — three plants from the same family that fold their leaves at night, three very different foliage types in the same green and purple tones.
- Place it in a bathroom or bright living room in the white relief ceramic decorative pot Ø13.5 cm — the matte white contrasts beautifully with the bright orange flowers.
- Pair it with a Guzmania Hope and a Vriesea Elan — three tropical plants with colorful bracts that create a floral composition without cut flowers, durable and graphic.
- For a graphic composition in warm tones, pair it with an Anthurium Red in the gray Borneo basket Ø14 cm — the neutral gray of the natural fiber highlights the orange and red tones of both blooms.
Verdeia tips
- Maintain high humidity: this is the most important factor to prolong flowering and prevent browning of leaf edges — mist 2 to 3 times a week or place a humidifier nearby in winter.
- Use non-calcareous water: lime causes persistent brown spots on the edges of the velvety leaves — switch to filtered or overnight-set water if your water is calcareous.
- Repot every 2 years in spring: in a slightly larger pot with fresh, well-draining substrate — properly done, repotting restarts growth and encourages the production of new floral bracts.
