🌀 Unique spiral foliage • ☀️ Bright light / partial shade • 💧 Infrequent watering • 📏 H15 cm | Pot Ø11 cm • 🌿 Trailing & graphic • 🐾 Non-toxic
Sedum makinoi 'Tornado', or Spiral Sedum, is a compact succulent native to the rocky slopes of Japan. Its bright green fleshy leaves, arranged in tight spirals along flexible trailing stems, give it a striking graphic silhouette — a plant that intrigues and effortlessly structures any plant arrangement.
Very easy to care for, it stores water in its leaves and easily tolerates missed waterings. It thrives equally well on a windowsill, hanging, or on a shelf. Discover it in our selection of trailing plants and our cactus and succulents collection.
Exposure & location
Sedum 'Tornado' comes from the rocky, well-lit environments of Japan — it loves light and can make do without too much of it.
- Ideal exposure: bright indirect light — east or west-facing windowsill, a few hours of gentle sun.
- Tolerates: partial shade — but growth will be looser and spirals less dense.
- Avoid: intense direct afternoon sun which can scorch the leaves.
- Outdoors: possible from May to September, sheltered from heavy rain and wind.
- Temperature: 15–28 °C, minimum 10 °C.
- Substrate: very well-draining — special cactus and succulent soil or universal potting mix + 30% sand/perlite.
The brighter its location, the denser and more compact its rosettes — light maintains the characteristic spiral effect of the Tornado.
Watering & care
- Watering: infrequent — wait until the substrate is completely dry before watering.
- Frequency: about every 8–10 days in summer, every 2–3 weeks in winter.
- Technique: generous watering then complete drying — avoid frequent light watering which promotes root rot.
- Drainage: essential — pot must have drainage holes, no standing water in the saucer.
- Fertilizer: light, every 6–8 weeks in spring-summer with diluted succulent fertilizer.
Soft or yellowing leaves indicate overwatering — the most common mistake with succulents. When in doubt, always wait one more day before watering. Check out our complete watering guide to never overwater again.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
With its trailing stems and graphic spirals, Sedum 'Tornado' is equally comfortable hanging alone or in a composition with other succulents.
- Hanging: its trailing stems elegantly spread from a high shelf or hanging support — its natural showcase.
- In arrangements: pair it with a Crassula or a Senecio for a mini succulent garden with contrasting textures.
- Ideal pot: light concrete, natural terracotta, or matte ceramic — mineral materials enhance its graphic and Japanese character.
- Style: minimalist, contemporary, wabi-sabi — it fits equally well in a clean interior or a dense urban jungle.
Placed on decorative gravel in a concrete decorative pot, it creates a very successful minimalist zen garden effect.
Verdeia tips
- Never overwater — it’s the number one enemy of succulents. Its fleshy leaves store water: a constantly moist substrate rots roots within weeks without visible signs until it’s too late.
- Choose a pot wider than it is tall — Sedum makinoi has shallow, spreading roots. A wide, shallow pot suits it better than a tall pot that retains too much moisture deep down.
- Propagate easily by cuttings — cut a 5–7 cm stem, let the cut dry for 24 hours in open air, then place it on dry substrate. It roots in 2–3 weeks without special care.
- Take it outside in summer — from May to September, it enjoys a sunny terrace or balcony. Bring it indoors as soon as nights drop below 10 °C and protect it from heavy rain.
- Remove dry leaves at the base — leaves that naturally dry at the bottom of stems don’t need urgent removal, but regularly removing them keeps the plant neat and airy.
- 🐾 Non-toxic — Sedum makinoi is safe for dogs and cats. One of the few graphic succulents that is entirely pet-friendly.

What to do upon receiving my plant?
