Frequently Asked Questions
When should you prune a Hydrangea arborescens 'Pink Annabelle'? Cut all stems back to 10–15 cm from the ground in February-March — 'Pink Annabelle' blooms on new growth and a short prune each winter produces the largest pink flower clusters.
Why do the flower clusters of Hydrangea 'Pink Annabelle' droop? Drooping clusters are caused by lack of water — water generously as soon as the foliage wilts and mulch the base to keep the soil cool between waterings.

🌸 Huge bright pink spherical bouquets from June to September • 💪 Strong stems — flowers do not droop • ☀️ Partial shade to gentle sun • ❄️ Hardy down to –25 °C • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H30 cm | Decorative pot Ø19 cm
Hydrangea arborescens 'Pink Annabelle', or pink ball hydrangea, is a perennial shrub from a European horticultural selection, developed to bring the pink color to arborescent hydrangeas — a shade absent from the classic variety. Its huge bright pink spherical bouquets, which fade to pale pink then soft green at the end of the season, brighten balconies, terraces, and flower beds with a generous and romantic bloom. Among outdoor flowering plants, it is one of the most generous for partial shade exposures.
Easy to prune, very hardy, and suitable for pots as well as open ground, it is the pink version of the 'Strong Annabelle'® for a flower-filled and romantic terrace from early summer until the first frosts.
Which ball hydrangea to choose?
Verdeia offers two Hydrangea arborescens with distinct colors. Here is how to compare them:
- Hydrangea arborescens 'Pink Annabelle' (this plant) — bright pink spherical bouquets turning green at the end of the season, blooming June-September. The choice for a warm and romantic palette.
- Hydrangea arborescens 'Strong Annabelle'® — pure white spherical bouquets turning soft green, same blooming period, reinforced stems that do not droop. The choice for a brighter, architectural atmosphere, or for a very elegant white-pink duo.
Exposure & location
'Pink Annabelle' thrives in bright partial shade — it is sheltered from the harsh afternoon sun that keeps the pink color most intense and long-lasting. Full sun quickly fades the bouquets and shortens the blooming period. Like all arborescent hydrangeas, it adapts well to pot culture as well as open ground in fresh soil.
- Exposure: partial shade to gentle sun — avoid midday full sun which fades the pink.
- Location: balcony, terrace, courtyard, shaded flower bed, or urban garden.
- Soil: rich, fresh, humus-rich, and slightly acidic — avoid overly calcareous soils.
- In pot: large container at least 30 cm deep, slightly acidic substrate.
In calcareous regions, water preferably with rainwater — tap water that is too calcareous causes yellowing of the foliage and can gradually reduce the intensity of the pink bouquets.
Watering & care
'Pink Annabelle' is very sensitive to lack of water during hot periods — its foliage visibly droops as soon as the soil dries. The finger test at 5 cm depth is essential to gauge watering. If leaves yellow outside of water stress periods, check the possible causes — often excess lime or depleted substrate in pots.
- Watering: abundant and regular in summer — the soil should never dry out completely.
- Pruning: at the end of winter, cut all stems back to 10–15 cm from the ground to fully renew flowering.
- Fertilizer: for flowering plants or special hydrangea fertilizer in spring — avoid nitrogen-rich fertilizers that promote foliage growth.
- Dried flowers: leave the heads in place all winter — they protect the buds and are decorative when frosted.
Never prune 'Pink Annabelle' in autumn — it blooms on current year wood and a winter pruning to 10–15 cm from the ground in February-March is not only harmless but essential for dense flowering.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The bright and generous pink of 'Pink Annabelle', its imposing volume, and long flowering period make it a structuring plant that brings warmth and romance to any composition — whether in a Mediterranean garden or a lush outdoor jungle.
- For a striking white and pink contrast in flower beds, pair it with the white Hydrangea 'Strong Annabelle'® — same habit, same flowering schedule, pink-white palette that together fades to green at season’s end.
- For a very graphic red and pink zen effect, place it next to the Acer palmatum 'Garnet' in a pot — the finely cut garnet red of the maple and the huge pink hydrangea bouquets create a warm and sophisticated palette in a Japanese garden spirit.
- For a persistent backdrop that intensifies the pink, plant it in front of a Lonicera henryi evergreen — the shiny dark green honeysuckle foliage contrasts to amplify the warmth of the pink bouquets.
- To enhance pink bouquets in pots, a decorative pot in bottle green or anthracite gray ceramic creates the sharpest contrast — the cool background intensifies the warm pink of the flowers and adds depth to the arrangement.
Cut flowers of 'Pink Annabelle' are stunning fresh or dried — cut stems at 40–50 cm as soon as bouquets are fully open and immediately place them in water for optimal vase life.
Verdeia Tips
- Cut back short every late winter without exception: 'Pink Annabelle' blooms on new shoots — severe pruning to 10–15 cm from the ground in February-March produces vigorous stems with larger bouquets than an unpruned plant, which blooms high with small scattered bouquets.
- Water generously on hot days: drooping foliage in hot weather is an immediate warning sign — water in the evening to let water penetrate without evaporation, and mulch at the base to keep soil cool between waterings.
- Do not remove flower heads in autumn: old inflorescences left in place protect buds just below from winter frosts — remove them only in February during annual pruning.
