Hydrangea arborescens 'Pink Annabelle', or pink ball hydrangea, is a perennial shrub from a European horticultural selection, developed to bring the pink color to arborescent hydrangeas — a shade absent from the classic variety. Its huge bright pink spherical bouquets, which fade to pale pink then soft green at the end of the season, brighten balconies, terraces, and flower beds with a generous and romantic bloom. Among outdoor flowering plants, it is one of the most generous for partial shade exposures.
Easy to prune, very hardy, and suitable for pots as well as open ground, it is the pink version of the 'Strong Annabelle'® for a flower-filled and romantic terrace from early summer until the first frosts.

Exposure & location
'Pink Annabelle' thrives in bright partial shade — it is sheltered from the harsh afternoon sun that keeps the pink color most intense and long-lasting. Full sun quickly fades the bouquets and shortens the blooming period. Like all arborescent hydrangeas, it adapts well to pot culture as well as open ground in fresh soil.
- Exposure: partial shade to gentle sun — avoid midday full sun which fades the pink.
- Location: balcony, terrace, courtyard, shaded flower bed, or urban garden.
- Soil: rich, fresh, humus-rich, and slightly acidic — avoid overly calcareous soils.
- In pot: large container at least 30 cm deep, slightly acidic substrate.
In calcareous regions, water preferably with rainwater — tap water that is too calcareous causes yellowing of the foliage and can gradually reduce the intensity of the pink bouquets.
Watering & care
'Pink Annabelle' is very sensitive to lack of water during hot periods — its foliage visibly droops as soon as the soil dries. The finger test at 5 cm depth is essential to gauge watering. If leaves yellow outside of water stress periods, check the possible causes — often excess lime or depleted substrate in pots.
- Watering: abundant and regular in summer — the soil should never dry out completely.
- Pruning: at the end of winter, cut all stems back to 10–15 cm from the ground to fully renew flowering.
- Fertilizer: for flowering plants or special hydrangea fertilizer in spring — avoid nitrogen-rich fertilizers that promote foliage growth.
