🌼 Bright yellow flowers from January on bare stems • 🌿 Climbing or trailing • ☀️ Full sun to partial shade • ❄️ Very hardy • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
Jasminum nudiflorum, or winter jasmine, is a climber native to China that blooms when everything else is asleep. Its small bright yellow flowers appear from January directly on the bare green stems, awakening balconies and terraces in the heart of winter with a bold and luminous color. Note: unlike other jasmines, its flowers are scentless — it is its winter flowering, not its fragrance, that makes it valuable.
Among the hardy climbers in the catalog, it is one of the easiest and most resilient — it requires almost no maintenance once established.
Exposure & Location
Winter jasmine is very adaptable — it tolerates full sun as well as partial shade, and withstands harsh winters without protection. It can climb a wall, railing, or trellis, or cascade down from a low wall or tall planter — two very different uses for the same plant.
- Exposure: full sun to partial shade — blooms in both conditions.
- Location: balcony, terrace, wall, pergola, trellis, or low wall.
- In a pot: stable container with vertical support or elevated to allow stems to trail down.
- Hardiness: excellent — tolerates cold winters very well.
Place it near an entrance or window — its bright yellow flowers on bare green stems are especially striking in January and February when the rest of the garden is still dormant.
Watering & Care
Winter jasmine is one of the least demanding plants in the catalog. Water regularly in pots, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings — in the ground, it becomes almost self-sufficient. A light pruning just after flowering encourages new stems that will bear next winter’s flowers. Semi-woody stem cuttings taken in summer root very easily.
- Watering: moderate in pots — allow slight drying between waterings, avoid stagnant water in winter.
- Pruning: light pruning just after flowering, late winter or early spring.
- Care: minimal — suitable for beginners and low-maintenance balconies.
Always prune after flowering, never before — the January-March flowers form on the previous year’s stems, so pruning too early would remove all the winter blooms.
Decor Ideas & Plant Combinations
Winter jasmine brings color when everything else is still bare. Its bright green arched stems are graphic even without leaves, and its vivid yellow flowers visually warm facades and balconies in January and February.
- For a white and yellow winter arrangement, the Camellia 'Nuccio's Gem' blooms at the same time — the large double white camellia flowers and the small bright yellow jasmine flowers create a very refined winter duo with contrasting colors and shapes.
- To brighten a green backdrop all winter, the evergreen Lonicera henryi creates a dense dark green foliage background — the bright yellow of winter jasmine stands out even more against this dark evergreen backdrop.
- For a texture contrast at the base, the evergreen variegated green and cream Carex 'Ice Dance' adds a graphic and bright touch at the foot of winter jasmine — two very hardy evergreen plants to dress a terrace corner even in January.
- For a yellow and gold climbing wall, the evergreen gold and green variegated Hedera helix 'Goldherz' complements winter jasmine — two very hardy climbers that dress the wall year-round with warm complementary tones.
Verdeia Tips
- Guide young stems on the support from planting: winter jasmine does not cling by itself — tie the main stems fanwise to the trellis or railing with raffia from the start; they will form the framework of the mature plant.
- Mulch the base in pots to protect roots: winter jasmine is hardy in the ground but its roots in pots are more vulnerable to prolonged frost — a thick mulch layer of 5 to 8 cm protects the root ball during harsh winters.
- Use pruned stems for cuttings: stems cut after flowering root very easily in summer — dip them in fresh, moist substrate in the shade to get new plants in a few weeks. If leaves yellow out of season, check drainage and watering.
