Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Alocasia Macrorrhiza suitable for a standard apartment? It is suitable for apartments provided there is a large, bright room with enough floor and ceiling space — its giant leaves need room to spread freely.
Does the Alocasia Macrorrhiza lose its leaves in winter? Yes, it commonly loses several leaves in winter during its resting period, especially if light levels drop significantly — reduce watering and the plant will grow back vigorously in spring.

🌿 Giant glossy green leaves • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🏙️ XXL architectural presence • 📏 H70 cm | Pot Ø19 cm
Alocasia Macrorrhiza, also called Giant Elephant Ear, is a majestic tropical plant known for its huge glossy heart-shaped leaves held by long sturdy petioles — leaves that can reach one meter in length at maturity. An unmatched architectural presence among large indoor plants.
Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia and the Pacific, Alocasia macrorrhiza naturally grows in wet and swampy areas where it develops massive foliage. At 70 cm upon delivery, it is still in its juvenile phase — its leaves will quickly grow to create the most immersive indoor jungle atmosphere possible. The benefits of large plants on mood and concentration are especially notable with species of this scale.
Which Alocasia variety to choose?
The Alocasia genus offers a great diversity of shapes and sizes — here’s how Alocasia Macrorrhiza stands out from other large varieties in the catalog:
- Alocasia Macrorrhiza (this plant) — giant glossy green leaves that can reach 1 m in length, very imposing habit. The largest variety of the entire genus.
- Alocasia Regal Shield — very large shield-shaped leaves dark green on top with deep purple undersides. The darkest and most dramatic version.
- Alocasia Gageana California — very large thick leaves with spectacular embossed veins. The most architectural textured version.
- Alocasia Lauterbachiana — long narrow wavy leaves with pronounced veins, airy habit. The most slender and graphic version.
- Alocasia Zebrina — arrow-shaped leaves held by spectacular black and white striped stems. The version with the most decorative stems.
- Alocasia Polly — dark green leaves with very pronounced silvery-white veins, compact size. The classic version to start with.
Exposure & location
The Alocasia Macrorrhiza thrives in bright indirect light — good brightness is essential for the leaves to reach their maximum size and for growth to remain vigorous. Light and humidity are the two main factors in its care.
- Exposure: bright indirect light to partial shade — avoid direct sunlight which burns the large leaves.
- Ideal: spacious living room, hallway, veranda, or any large space with a well-lit window and high ceiling.
- Temperature: 18 to 27 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
- Substrate: light, airy, and well-draining — universal potting soil mixed with perlite.
Allow plenty of space around the plant from the start — the giant leaves need room to spread freely and quickly get damaged if they touch a wall or furniture.
Watering & care
Despite its imposing size, Alocasia Macrorrhiza is sensitive to overwatering like all Alocasias — its roots rot easily in soggy substrate. The size of the leaves also makes knowing its life cycle particularly useful to anticipate winter dormancy periods.
- Watering: moderate — let the top 2 to 3 cm of substrate dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring and summer, every 2 weeks in winter.
- Drainage: essential — use a pot with drainage holes and well-draining substrate.
- Humidity: prefers 60–70% humidity — mist occasionally or place near other plants.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring-summer with diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants.
- Cleaning: gently wipe the huge leaves with a damp cloth — an essential task to preserve their characteristic shiny green glow.
Guttation — small drops of water that appear on the leaf edges in the morning — is a normal phenomenon in Alocasia Macrorrhiza, indicating the plant is healthy and well hydrated.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its giant leaves make it a statement plant that often stands on its own — but in large spaces, it also fits well into ambitious urban compositions.
- Pair it with a Strelitzia Nicolai with large paddle-shaped leaves and a Musa Tropicana with ribbon-like leaves — three tropical large-leaf plants of very different shapes (heart / paddle / ribbon) for an XXL arrangement available as a pack.
- Place it in a corner of a spacious living room or hall in the Capi Nature Groove Taupe pot Ø22 cm — the warm taupe brown of the pot harmonizes with the intense shiny green of the large leaves without creating a harsh contrast.
- Pair it with a Ficus Cyathistipula with shiny rounded leaves and a Caryota Mitis with very graphic triangular leaves — three radically different leaf textures (giant smooth / shiny round / serrated triangular) in a bright corner.
- For a unique space around a relaxation corner, place it alone in the natural Selin basket Ø22 cm — creating a calming plant corner sometimes only requires one well-chosen imposing plant.
Verdeia advice
- Wipe the large leaves once a month: on such broad surfaces, dust quickly accumulates and significantly reduces photosynthesis — a damp cloth wiped on both sides of each leaf maintains the characteristic shiny green and the plant’s vigor.
- Prepare for the winter rest period: below 15 °C or with a strong drop in light, Alocasia Macrorrhiza may lose several leaves and go dormant — this is normal; reduce watering, keep it warm, and the plant will vigorously regrow in spring.
- Repot into a stable, heavy container: as the leaves grow, the plant’s center of gravity rises — choose a ceramic pot or a weighted basket wide enough to prevent tipping, and plan to repot every 2 years in spring with fresh substrate.
