Frequently Asked Questions
Can you plant a climbing honeysuckle in the shade? Lonicera henryi is the most shade-tolerant honeysuckle — it blooms and keeps its shiny leaves even in north or east-facing spots, where other varieties refuse to grow.
When should you prune an evergreen honeysuckle? Prune Lonicera henryi only at the end of winter, never in autumn — autumn pruning would remove flower buds and expose the stems to late frosts in March-April.

🌿 Glossy dark green evergreen foliage all year • 🌸 Scented orange-pink flowers from May to August • 🐝 Honey-producing • ❄️ Hardy down to –15 °C • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
The Lonicera henryi, or Henryi honeysuckle, is a perennial climbing vine native to China, distinguished from all other honeysuckles by its glossy dark green evergreen foliage — a rare decorative asset that ensures plant coverage all year, even in winter. Its scented orange-pink tubular flowers from May to August make it one of the most versatile climbers in the outdoor climbers collection.
Vigorous, undemanding, and suitable for pots as well as open ground, it’s the ideal choice to sustainably dress a wall, fence, or pergola on a balcony or terrace without ever losing its foliage.
Which honeysuckle to choose?
The Verdeia climbers collection offers four honeysuckles with distinct characters. Here’s how to position Lonicera henryi among the catalog varieties:
- Lonicera henryi (this plant) — glossy dark green evergreen foliage, scented orange-pink flowers from May to August. The choice for a permanent green screen all year round.
- Lonicera periclymenum 'Serotina' — dark pink and cream flowers, very intense evening fragrance, blooming from June to September. The most fragrant variety, deciduous foliage.
- Lonicera periclymenum 'Belgica' — pale pink and white flowers, early blooming from May to July, delicate fragrance. The choice for a soft, springtime atmosphere.
- Lonicera japonica 'Halliana' — white flowers turning yellow, sweet fragrance, semi-evergreen foliage. The most covering and fastest variety to hide a fence.
Exposure & location
Lonicera henryi is the most shade-tolerant of honeysuckles — it grows in full sun as well as light shade, making it especially valuable for challenging exposures. Its evergreen foliage ensures visual coverage all year round, including winter when other climbers are bare.
- Exposure: full sun, partial shade, or light shade — less floriferous in dense shade but the foliage remains decorative.
- Support: trellis, pergola, fence, wall — stems twine by themselves with initial training.
- Soil: fertile, fresh, and well-drained — tolerates most garden soils.
- In a pot: large container of at least 30 cm, watering more frequent than in open ground.
Plant it in the shade — a tile placed on the ground or a ground cover at the base keeps the roots cool and significantly stimulates flowering in summer.
Watering & maintenance
Once well established, Lonicera henryi is very self-sufficient. In the first year, keep the soil regularly moist — the finger test deep down is the best guide. If leaves yellow outside of winter, it often indicates too dry or nutrient-deficient substrate, as detailed in our article on yellowing leaves.
- Watering: regular during the first year — moderate afterwards, very sparse in winter.
- Pruning: light pruning at the end of winter to remove dead stems and open up the structure — avoid heavy pruning that would remove flower buds.
- Fertilizer: a spring compost application at the base is enough to support flowering.
- Hardiness: down to –15 °C — no protection needed in open ground.
Unlike deciduous honeysuckles, do not cut back Lonicera henryi severely — its evergreen foliage recovers slowly after heavy pruning.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The shiny dark green evergreen foliage of Lonicera henryi forms a stable green backdrop all year round that highlights seasonal flowering plants — it acts as a background in an outdoor jungle or as a structuring screen in a Mediterranean garden.
- For a scented green wall in two seasons, pair it with Lonicera 'Serotina' on the same support — henryi provides the evergreen green background in winter while 'Serotina' takes over with its highly fragrant pink flowers from June to September.
- For a three-season flowering pergola, combine it with Passiflora caerulea — the graphic blue passionflower blooms (June-September) contrast with the orange-pink flowers of henryi (May-August) against a backdrop of evergreen foliage.
- To quickly cover a fence facing north or east, Lonicera henryi is the only climber in the catalog able to cover a shaded area while flowering — no other honeysuckle or jasmine tolerates shade as well.
- In a pot on a north or east balcony, a large anthracite gray ceramic container visually anchors the base of the vine and creates a sharp contrast between the dark pot and the shiny green foliage, highlighted all year round.
The foliage of Lonicera henryi reddens slightly in cold winter before turning green again in spring — this seasonal color change adds extra decorative interest on north-facing walls.
Verdeia tips
- Train the plant from planting to guide the framework: the first stems fixed in the right direction form the plant’s final structure — a well-oriented framework from the start prevents a tangled mess that’s hard to untangle after two or three growing seasons.
- Prune only at the end of winter, never in autumn: the evergreen foliage protects flower buds in winter — autumn pruning would remove future flowers and expose stems to late frosts in March-April.
- Apply compost at the base each spring instead of mineral fertilizer: compost releases nutrients slowly and improves soil structure over time, which stimulates new shoot growth and foliage density more than concentrated fertilizer.
