Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the leaves of my Calathea stop moving at night? Nyctinastic movement decreases or disappears in case of low light, water stress, or drafts. Move the plant to a slightly brighter spot, ensure the soil stays slightly moist, and keep it away from cold sources. The movement should resume within a few days.
Is Calathea Bluegrass safe for cats and dogs? Yes, Calathea is completely non-toxic to cats and dogs. It’s one of the few large tropical plants with graphic foliage that is entirely pet-friendly.

🌿 Blue-green foliage with silver reflections • 💜 Purple undersides • ☀️ Partial shade to indirect light • 💧 Regular watering • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø17 cm • 🌬️ Air-purifying • 🐾 Non-toxic
The Calathea Bluegrass is a tropical plant native to the humid understory of South America. Its large elongated blue-green leaves adorned with delicate silver veins and purple undersides give it a soothing and sophisticated character — one of the rarest palettes among Calatheas.
Like all Marantaceae, it exhibits nyctinasty — its leaves raise in the evening and lower in the morning. Completely non-toxic to pets. Discover it in our Calathea collection and our pet-friendly selection. Check our new plant care guide to get started right.
Which Calathea variety to choose?
The Calathea genus offers a great diversity of patterns and colors. Here are the most distinctive profiles from our catalog:
- Calathea Bluegrass (this plant) — blue-green foliage with silver reflections, purple undersides, H65 cm | Pot Ø17 cm. The most soothing and unique in color.
- Calathea Stripestar — very contrasting white stripes on green background, same size H65 cm | Pot Ø17 cm. The most graphic.
- Calathea Majestica 'Princeps' — dark green foliage with elegant white stripes. The most regal.
- Calathea Ornata — fine pale pink stripes on dark green background. The most delicate.
- Calathea Crocata — dark green foliage with spectacular orange blooms. The only truly flowering one.
Other varieties are available in our full collection — Fusion White, Lancifolia, Fasciata, and more.
Exposure & location
The Calathea Bluegrass naturally grows under tropical forest canopy — it prefers diffuse light and constant humidity, and does not tolerate direct sun or dry air well.
- Ideal exposure: partial shade to soft indirect light — a few meters from a window.
- Avoid: direct sunlight that burns leaves and fades silvery reflections, very dark corners that stop growth.
- Temperature: 18–25 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
- Humidity: 60–80% essential — bright bathroom or humidifier nearby.
- Substrate: light and well-drained — universal potting soil with perlite.
A bright bathroom is the ideal spot — the natural humidity after showers replicates the tropical conditions it needs without extra effort.
Watering & care
- Watering: regular — keep the substrate slightly moist without ever soaking it.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times a week in spring and summer, reduced in winter.
- Water: non-lime water is essential — filtered or rainwater. Lime causes characteristic brown edges.
- Humidity: mist the foliage 2 to 3 times a week in dry environments.
- Drainage: pot must have drainage holes, empty saucer after watering.
- Fertilizer: liquid green plant fertilizer diluted by half, once a month from April to September.
Brown edges are almost always caused by lime or dry air — not by underwatering. Start by changing the water before adjusting the watering frequency. Check out our complete watering guide to adjust frequency by season.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The blue-green tones of the Calathea Bluegrass bring a rare note of freshness and serenity among tropical plants — a color that stands out without ever overwhelming.
- Solo in a bedroom or zen living room: in a matte white or gray ceramic pot, its blue-green palette creates an immediate calming atmosphere.
- In arrangements: pair it with a Maranta or a dark green Philodendron for a harmonious cool/warm color contrast.
- Ideal pot: matte white, gray, or pale blue ceramic — cool tones enhance its silvery reflections without competing with them.
Its silvery reflections beautifully catch the soft light of a dimly lit room — one of the few foliage types that gains presence in partial shade.
Verdeia tips
- Calcareous water is its number one enemy — brown edges, white spots on leaves, and dull silver reflections are almost always caused by calcareous water. Switch to filtered water or water left to stand overnight before use.
- Humidity is essential — native to humid tropical understories, it quickly suffers from dry air in heated apartments during winter. Mist 2 to 3 times a week or place the pot on a bed of constantly moist clay pebbles.
- Leaf movement is a health indicator — a plant that closes well at night and opens in the morning is a happy plant. If the movement stops, check light and humidity first.
- Protect it from drafts — very sensitive to sudden temperature changes. Keep it away from poorly insulated windows in winter and air conditioners in summer.
- Repot every 2 years in spring — in a light, well-draining substrate. Choose a slightly larger size — a pot that’s too big retains too much moisture.
- 🐾 Non-toxic — Calathea is completely safe for dogs and cats. Check out our plants and pets guide for more pet-friendly ideas.
