Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Polyscias losing its leaves? Leaf drop is almost always due to a change of location, a draft, a sudden temperature change, or irregular watering. Stabilize all these factors — place it in its permanent spot without moving it, maintain proper humidity, and water regularly. A slight leaf drop upon arrival is normal during acclimation.
How to prune a Polyscias Ming Gold to maintain its bonsai shape? Lightly prune in spring, always above a leaf node to encourage branching. Remove branches that unbalance the silhouette. Avoid heavy pruning that stresses the plant and causes leaf drop. Repotting every 3-4 years in a well-draining bonsai substrate is sufficient.

✨ Ultra-fine golden foliage • 🌳 Polyscias Ming Gold shaped as bonsai • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H40 cm | Pot Ø14 cm • 🌬️ Air-purifying • ⚠️ Toxic to pets
The Polyscias Ming Gold, also called Golden Aralia, is a tropical plant native to the Pacific islands, cultivated and shaped here as a bonsai. Its bright golden feathery fronds, arranged on a woody, branched trunk, give it an immediately recognizable sculptural silhouette — a plant that is as much a decorative object as a living plant.
More demanding than other Polyscias — it needs constant light and humidity to keep its ultra-fine foliage — but its sculpted shape and unique character make it a collector’s plant. Discover it in our Polyscias collection and our selection of collector plants.
Which Polyscias variety should you choose?
Each Polyscias has a distinct character — it’s the foliage and habit that set them apart. Here are the available profiles:
- Polyscias Ming Gold Bonsai (Golden Aralia) (this plant) — ultra-fine golden foliage, woody trunk, sculpted bonsai shape. The most refined and sculptural.
- Polyscias Hawaiiana 'Ming' — same ultra-fine foliage but green, natural shrubby habit. The classic non-bonsai version.
- Polyscias Roble — glossy deep green rounded leaves, compact dense habit. The most versatile and easiest.
- Polyscias Fabian — round burgundy-purple leaves, bushy habit. The most colorful.
- Polyscias Balfouriana — round green and cream variegated leaves, airy habit. The brightest.
The Polyscias Ming Gold Bonsai is the only variety in our catalog shaped as a bonsai — if you’re looking for a plant that is both alive and sculpted, this is it. Other varieties are available in our full collection.
Exposure & location
The Polyscias Ming Gold Bonsai (Golden Aralia) requires more light than other Polyscias — its ultra-fine foliage and sculpted shape need good exposure to stay dense and balanced.
- Ideal exposure: bright indirect light — near an east- or west-facing window, a few hours of gentle sun accepted.
- To avoid: deep shade that causes foliage to stretch and disrupts the bonsai shape, harsh direct afternoon sun.
- Temperature: 18–24 °C, without sudden changes or drafts — very sensitive to temperature shocks.
- Humidity: 50–70% ambient humidity essential — mist regularly or place on a bed of moist clay pebbles.
- Substrate: light and well-drained — bonsai soil or universal potting mix with perlite.
Do not move it once its spot is chosen — like all Polyscias, it reacts to environmental changes by dropping leaves. Choose its permanent location upon receipt.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — let the surface of the substrate dry slightly between waterings.
- Frequency: once a week in spring-summer, reduced in autumn-winter.
- Water: room temperature water, filtered or left to stand for 24 hours if possible.
- Misting: 1 to 2 times a week — the ultra-fine foliage is sensitive to dry air.
- Drainage: pot with drainage holes required, empty the saucer after watering.
- Fertilizer: liquid green plant fertilizer diluted by half, once a month in spring and summer.
- Pruning: light pruning in spring to maintain the bonsai shape and encourage branching.
Polyscias prefers to be slightly underwatered rather than overwatered. Yellow leaves = overwatering in almost all cases.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The bonsai shape of the Polyscias 'Ming Gold' makes it a sculptural plant — it doesn’t need to be surrounded to stand out. Placed alone, it’s enough to give character to a space.
- Alone as a centerpiece: in a gray or black ceramic bonsai pot, it creates an immediate zen focal point on a console, desk, or bright shelf.
- In a zen arrangement: pair it with a pebble, a dry branch, or some stones to enhance the Japanese-inspired aesthetic.
- Ideal pot: low and wide bonsai pot in matte ceramic — the flattened shape of the traditional bonsai pot highlights the trunk and branches.
Its ultra-fine golden foliage beautifully catches the low light — placed near a window late in the day, it creates a very decorative glowing halo.
Verdeia advice
- Leaf drop is its warning signal — like all Polyscias, it responds to shocks by losing leaves. Main causes: change of location, draft, sudden temperature change, irregular watering. Stabilize all these variables upon receipt.
- Humidity is essential — its ultra-fine foliage dries quickly in heated environments. Mist 2 to 3 times a week in winter, or place the pot on a bed of constantly moist clay pebbles.
- Prune carefully to maintain shape — light pruning in spring on overly long branches keeps the bonsai silhouette. Always prune above a leaf node to encourage branching.
- Brown leaves: hard water or dry air — switch to filtered water and increase misting frequency. Brown tips on such fine foliage are very noticeable — act at the first signs.
- Minimal repotting — the bonsai prefers to be snug in a shallow pot. Repot only every 3–4 years in spring, using a special well-draining bonsai substrate.
- ⚠️ Toxic to pets — Polyscias contains irritating saponins, toxic if ingested by dogs and cats. Keep out of reach of animals. See our plants and pets guide for suitable alternatives.
