Exposure & placement
The Clusia Rosea is a tropical plant that enjoys light — the more it receives, the more vigorous its growth and dense its foliage.
- Ideal exposure: bright indirect light — near a south- or west-facing window, without harsh direct sun.
- Tolerates: partial shade — growth will be slower but the plant remains decorative.
- Avoid: deep shade and direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.
- Temperature: 16–29 °C — does not tolerate temperatures below 12 °C.
- Humidity: prefers a humid atmosphere — ideal for a bright kitchen or bathroom.
- Substrate: well-draining universal potting soil.
Clusia is a hemi-epiphyte in nature — it likes to be placed near other plants that maintain ambient humidity.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — let the top few centimeters of substrate dry out before watering.
- Frequency: about once a week in summer, less often in winter.
- Drainage: essential — no stagnant water in the saucer.
- Humidity: mist the foliage regularly or group with other plants.
- Fertilizer: every 4–6 weeks in spring-summer with a liquid green plant fertilizer.
- Cleaning: wipe large leaves with a damp cloth to maintain their shine.
Its thick, tough leaves allow it to tolerate occasional missed waterings — it’s one of the most drought-resistant tropical plants. Check out our new plant care guide to get started right.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
With its broad, shiny leaves and structured form, the Clusia Rosea adds volume and strong plant presence to an interior. The branded "Let's Clean the Air" pot adds a positive message visible every day.
- Solo: the matte white gift pot stands on its own on a desk, coffee table, or console.
- In arrangement: pair it with other Clusia Rosea or a Ficus for a contrast of textures and volumes.
- Gift: the turnkey presentation with a greeting card makes it an ideal plant gift for a housewarming, birthday, or office farewell.
The Clusia Rosea is also nicknamed "Autograph Tree" — you can carve initials or a small word into its thick leaves, which will keep the mark indefinitely.
Verdeia Tips
- Never let water stagnate — its roots quickly rot in constantly soggy substrate. Always empty the saucer after watering and ensure perfect drainage.
- Humidity is its comfort condition — native to the Caribbean, it suffers from the dry air of heated apartments in winter. Mist the foliage 2 to 3 times a week or place it in a bright kitchen or bathroom.
- Protect it from cold — below 12 °C, growth stops and spots appear on the leaves. Keep it away from poorly insulated windows in winter.
- Repot in spring if necessary — Clusia can grow quickly under good conditions. As soon as roots appear under the pot, repot into a slightly larger container with fresh substrate.
- The message engraved on the leaves is permanent — if you want to personalize the plant, use a sharp object on a mature leaf. The mark remains visible as the leaf grows.
- ⚠️ Toxic to pets — Clusia Rosea is toxic to dogs and cats if ingested (digestive issues). Keep it out of reach of animals. See our plants and pets guide for suitable alternatives.
