Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Polyscias losing its leaves? Leaf drop is almost always due to overwatering, a change of location, or a draft. Reduce watering, stabilize the temperature, and avoid moving the plant. Losing a few leaves upon arrival is normal after transport.
What light exposure does a Polyscias Roble need? Soft indirect light to partial shade. It’s one of the few structured plants that tolerates low-light spaces. Avoid direct sunlight, which burns the leaves. Rotate the pot regularly for a balanced shape.

🌿 Air-purifying • 🌤️ Indirect light / Partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 🌴 Indoor tree look • ⚠️ Slightly toxic if ingested
The Polyscias Roble, also called Indoor Aralia, is a tropical shrub native to Pacific regions. Its thin woody trunk topped with dense foliage of glossy deep green rounded leaves gives it a structured, balanced silhouette reminiscent of a miniature tree — a strong plant presence in a compact size.
Suitable for low-light interiors, tolerant of neglect, and slow, controlled growth, it’s one of the most elegant indoor plants to dress up a living room, office, or entryway with minimal care. Also discover it in our selection of decorative foliage plants.
Which size to choose?
The Polyscias Roble is available in two sizes — the choice depends on the space and desired effect:
- D17 x H60 cm — compact size, ideal on a low shelf, desk, or in a corner. Perfect for a first Polyscias or a smaller space.
- D21 x H80 cm — generous size, more defined silhouette. Stands out more as a centerpiece in a living room or spacious entryway.
If you’re unsure, go for the D21 — the presence difference is significant and the plant grows slowly, so it will occupy that space for a long time.
Which Polyscias variety to choose?
Each Polyscias has a distinct character — it’s the foliage that makes all the difference. Here’s how the Roble fits into our collection:
- Polyscias Roble (this plant) — glossy deep green rounded leaves, compact and dense form. The most classic and versatile.
- Polyscias Fabian — round purple-burgundy leaves, bushy form. The most colorful and contrasting.
- Polyscias Balfouriana — round leaves variegated green and cream, airy form. The brightest and most graphic.
- Polyscias Hawaiiana 'Ming' — very finely cut foliage, slender form. The most graphic and airy.
Other varieties are available in our catalog — including Fruticosa and Ming Gold Bonsai for fans of sculpted shapes.
Exposure & placement
The Polyscias Roble is one of the few structured plants that can thrive away from windows. In its natural environment, it grows under tropical canopy — it replicates this behavior indoors.
- Ideal exposure: soft indirect light to Partial shade — north-facing window or room away from windows.
- Tolerates: low-light corners, offices without direct natural light.
- Avoid: direct sunlight that burns the foliage and dries the substrate too quickly.
- Temperature: 18–25 °C, without cold drafts or sudden changes.
- Substrate: well-draining — universal potting soil with clay pellets at the bottom of the pot.
Turn the pot a quarter turn every 2 weeks — Polyscias naturally grows toward the light, and regular rotation ensures a balanced shape on all sides.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — let the substrate surface dry between waterings.
- Frequency: every 7–10 days in summer, every 2–3 weeks in winter.
- Water: room temperature water, preferably non-calcareous.
- Drainage: essential — pot must have drainage holes, empty saucer after watering.
- Fertilizer: every 3–4 weeks in spring and summer with a liquid fertilizer for green plants.
- Repotting: every 2–3 years in spring into a slightly larger pot.
Polyscias prefers to be slightly underwatered rather than overwatered. Yellowing and dropping leaves almost always indicate overwatering — reduce watering immediately and let the substrate dry deeply.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
With its miniature tree silhouette and glossy foliage, the Polyscias Roble structures a space without overwhelming it. It adds vertical volume where many plants stay low.
- Alone as a centerpiece: in a white matte ceramic or concrete decorative pot, it plays the minimalist card with elegance — entryway, office, reading nook.
- In arrangement: pair it with a Ficus or a Dracaena for a contrast of textures and heights in a low-light interior.
- Ambient lamp: placed near indirect lighting, its glossy foliage catches the light and creates a very decorative effect in the evening.
Its slow growth is a decorating advantage — it keeps the same shape for a long time without spreading or needing frequent pruning.
Verdeia tips
- Avoid frequent moves — Polyscias is sensitive to environmental changes. Each move can cause temporary leaf drop. Choose its permanent location upon arrival and do not move it afterward.
- Leaf drop on delivery: no worries — losing a few leaves in the first days after transport is normal. Let it readjust for 48 hours without watering before placing it in its final spot.
- Mist in dry air — native to the tropics, it appreciates proper humidity. In heated apartments during winter, mist the foliage 2 to 3 times a week.
- Prune in spring to thicken — light pruning of overly long branches in March-April encourages branching and gives the plant a fuller, more balanced shape.
- Dust regularly — glossy leaves collect dust, which clogs stomata and dulls their shine. A damp cloth every 3–4 weeks is enough.
- ⚠️ Slightly toxic if ingested — keep out of reach of young children and pets. See our plants and pets guide for suitable alternatives.
