Wisteria – Climbing Wisterias: The Spring Spectacle

Wisteria is the queen of flowering climbing plants. Every spring, its long fragrant clusters — mauve, violet, white, or pink — transform pergolas, facades, and trellises into unforgettable floral cascades. Our wisterias are delivered in D15 cm × H65 cm pots, well-rooted and ready to be planted.

Our Available Varieties

  • Wisteria sinensis 'Prolific' – Blue wisteria — Early and very fragrant bloom (April–May), short clusters before the leaves.
  • Wisteria sinensis 'Caroline' – Violet wisteria — Spectacular in spring, ideal for pergolas or walls.
  • Wisteria floribunda 'Alba' – White wisteria — Long elegant clusters, blooming in May–June.
  • Wisteria floribunda 'Rosea' – Pink wisteria — Rare and delicate variety, romantic effect on arches or trellises.
  • Wisteria floribunda 'Naga Noda' – Double violet wisteria — Exceptionally long clusters, collector’s variety.

Growing Tips

  • ☀️ Exposure: full sun essential (minimum 6 hours/day)
  • 🌱 Soil: any well-drained soil, avoid overly nitrogen-rich fertilizers
  • 💧 Watering: regular during the first year, then very self-sufficient
  • ✂️ Pruning: twice a year — August (5–6 leaves) and January–February (2–3 buds)
  • 🏗️ Support: sturdy trellis or pergola required
  • ❄️ Hardiness: very hardy down to −20 °C

Wisteria sinensis or floribunda: which to choose?

Wisteria sinensis (Chinese wisteria) blooms before the leaves in April for a spectacular effect, with short, highly fragrant clusters. Wisteria floribunda (Japanese wisteria) produces long hanging clusters in May–June, reaching up to 90 cm in 'Naga Noda'. Both species are hardy to −20 °C and adapt well to all French gardens.
