Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the trunk of my Brighamia insignis softening? A softening trunk is almost always a sign of overwatering or collar rot — immediately reduce watering, check drainage, and always empty the saucer after each watering.
Is Brighamia insignis really threatened in the wild? Yes — it is classified as critically endangered in its natural habitat on Hawaiian cliffs, making it a collector’s plant with high botanical heritage value.

🌤️ Partial shade / Bright indoor light • 🌺 Fragrant autumn bloom • 🌿 Sculptural fleshy trunk • 📏 H37 cm | Pot Ø12 cm
The Brighamia insignis, nicknamed the Hawaiian Palm, is a fascinating and rare succulent native to the volcanic cliffs of Kaua'i and Ni'ihau — a species now threatened in its natural habitat. Its column-shaped fleshy trunk and bright green leaf rosette give it an immediately recognizable sculptural silhouette. Discover our collector plants.
Its autumn bloom — small delicately scented creamy white flowers — is a rare indoor event that rewards care throughout the year.
Exposure & Location
The Brighamia insignis enjoys bright but indirect light — on its native cliffs, it benefits from intense light often veiled by coastal mists. A few hours of gentle sun are acceptable; prolonged direct sun dries out the trunk.
- Exposure: partial shade or bright indoor light — an east or southeast-facing windowsill is ideal.
- Ideal for: bright living room, veranda, bright office, reading nook.
- Temperature: 18 to 26 °C, protected from cold drafts.
- Substrate: light, sandy, and very well-draining soil — cactus and succulent mix.
Watering & Care
- Watering: moderate — about every 10 to 12 days in summer, let the substrate dry well between waterings. Our guide to creating a plant relaxation corner will give you ideas to integrate it into your decor.
- Drainage: essential — always empty the saucer after watering; collar rot is irreversible.
- Fertilizer: twice a month from spring to late summer, diluted green plant fertilizer — stimulates autumn flowering.
- Winter rest: greatly reduce watering from October to February to respect its natural cycle.
- Pruning: unnecessary — simply remove yellowed leaves at the base of the trunk.
Decor Ideas & Plant Combinations
Its sculptural silhouette stands on its own — placed alone on a tall stand in a bright corner, it immediately becomes a focal point of the room without any composition effort.
- In an exotic arrangement: pair it with a Zamioculcas and a Sansevieria Laurentii — three low-watering plants, three distinct vertical forms, a coherent composition with no demanding maintenance.
- As a statement plant: place it alone on a stool or a light wood plant stand — its columnar silhouette immediately draws the eye without competition.
- Decorative pot: a matte ceramic or beige stoneware highlights the contrast between the fleshy trunk and the bright green foliage.
Verdeia Tips
- Respect the winter rest: drastically reduce watering from October to February — this period of relative dryness triggers the autumn bloom. An overly watered winter compromises the following year’s flowering.
- Avoid temperature shocks: Brighamia is sensitive to sudden temperature changes and drafts — choose its permanent location at installation and do not move it. Our guide to easy-care plants explains how to anticipate these needs.
- Fertilize in summer to bloom in autumn: bi-monthly fertilizer from June to August stimulates flower bud formation — without this nutrition, flowering is rare or absent.

What to do upon receiving my plant?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What to do if my plant arrives damaged?
