Frequently Asked Questions
Can you make coffee from the berries produced by an indoor Coffea arabica? Technically yes — the berries contain real arabica coffee beans. However, the quantities produced by an indoor plant remain very limited. The main interest is decorative and educational: watching the full cycle of the coffee cherry, from the fragrant white flower to the ripe red berry, is a fascinating experience in itself.
Why are the leaves of my Coffea arabica turning yellow? Yellowing leaves most often indicate overwatering or water that is too hard. Check that drainage is adequate and use filtered or rested water for 24 hours. Lack of light or nutrient deficiency can also cause this symptom — apply liquid fertilizer regularly in spring and summer.

☕ Arabian coffee plant — coffee plant • 🌿 Dense shiny dark green foliage • 🌸 Fragrant white flowers at maturity • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🪴 Included handcrafted two-tone ceramic pot • 📏 H20 cm | Pot Ø12 cm
The Coffea arabica, or Arabian coffee plant, is a fascinating indoor plant native to Ethiopia — it is the plant that produces the coffee beans we consume. Its shiny dark green foliage with wavy leaves is very decorative. When mature (3 to 4 years), it produces small star-shaped white flowers with a jasmine scent, followed by decorative red berries.
Delivered in its included handcrafted two-tone ceramic pot — matte cream lower part, black upper part with iridescent glazed effect — a distinctive container that immediately sets this set apart. Discover it in our collection of original plants and in our plant gift selection.
Which version of Coffea arabica should you choose?
Coffea arabica is available in several containers in our catalog:
- Coffea arabica in handcrafted two-tone pot (this product) — H20 cm | Pot Ø12 cm. The most artisanal and distinctive version.
- Coffea arabica in golden pot — H20 cm | Pot Ø12 cm. The luxurious and shiny version.
- Coffea arabica in jade pot — H20 cm | Pot Ø12 cm. The version with natural green tones.
- Classic size Coffea arabica — without decorative container included.
The handcrafted two-tone pot gives this set a unique character — the transition between matte cream and iridescent glazed black evokes the volcanic lands of Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee.
Exposure & location
The Coffea arabica prefers bright indirect light — in its natural habitat, it grows under the canopy of Ethiopian forests, sheltered from direct sun.
- Light: bright indirect light — avoid direct sunlight which can burn the shiny leaves.
- Ideal: bright office, well-lit shelf, near a window with a sheer curtain.
- Temperature: 18 to 24 °C, without cold drafts.
- Substrate: light, well-drained, and slightly acidic — universal potting soil with perlite.
To encourage flowering, provide high ambient humidity (60–70%) — mist regularly or place near a humidifier.
Watering & care
Coffea arabica prefers a slightly moist substrate — neither dry nor waterlogged. Check our watering guide to find the right rhythm.
- Watering: moderate — keep the substrate slightly moist, let the surface dry between waterings.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring-summer, reduced in winter.
- Humidity: prefers 60 to 70% ambient humidity — mist the leaves regularly.
- Fertilizer: every 4 weeks in spring-summer with a liquid fertilizer for green plants.
- Pruning: pinch the tips to encourage bushy and compact growth.
Turn the pot regularly — Coffea naturally grows toward the light and tends to become unbalanced if not rotated a quarter turn each week.
Flowering & fruiting
It is one of the few indoor plants that can produce fragrant flowers and edible fruit. Find our guide on the life cycles of indoor plants to understand its stages.
- Flowers: small, deliciously fragrant white stars (jasmine), after 3 to 4 years of cultivation under favorable conditions.
- Flowering period: spring-summer, can last several weeks.
- Berries: after flowering, green berries gradually ripen to bright red — each contains 2 coffee beans.
- Conditions for flowering: constant bright light, high humidity, stable temperature, regular fertilizing.
Flowering can take 3 to 4 years — a plant that rewards patience with a unique olfactory plant display indoors.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The glossy dark green foliage and the handmade two-tone pot create a composition that is both natural and sophisticated — a set that combines craftsmanship and greenery.
- Pairing: pair it with a Ficus elastica Tineke or a Calathea Makoyana for a tropical arrangement with contrasting graphic foliage. Find more ideas in our tropical pairing guide.
- Included pot: the two-tone handmade ceramic pot is included — the set is ready to display with nothing else needed.
- Atmosphere: perfect on a desk, a bright shelf, or as a unique gift — its story (it’s the coffee plant!) always makes it a conversation starter.
Verdeia advice
- A plant with a story — Coffea arabica is the plant that produces the coffee consumed worldwide. Its shiny foliage, fragrant flowers, and red berries make it one of the most fascinating and original indoor plants to grow at home.
- Humidity for flowering — maintain ambient humidity between 60 and 70% by misting daily or placing the pot on damp clay pebbles. In a bright bathroom, flowering is naturally encouraged.
- Pinch the tips — to encourage a bushy, compact shape, regularly pinch new shoots in spring. Without pruning, the coffee plant tends to grow tall at the expense of foliage density.
- Slightly toxic if ingested — leaves and beans contain caffeine and are slightly toxic to cats and dogs. Keep out of reach of pets.
