The Eucalyptus gunnii 'Azura' is immediately recognisable by its glaucous blue-grey foliage, made up of small round leaves arranged in pairs along slender stems. Native to the highlands of Tasmania, it is one of the few terrace shrubs with distinctly blue foliage.
Its special feature is its hardiness: while most eucalyptus freeze from -5 °C, 'Azura' withstands temperatures down to -15 °C, making it the only eucalyptus genuinely suitable for growing on a terrace in a continental climate. The crown also remains compact, whereas the typical species grows to 10 metres.
Light & placement
Eucalyptus requires full sun to develop the bluish tint of its foliage. In shade, the leaves turn green, the stems become elongated and the plant loses what makes it so decorative.
- Exposure: full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sun per day.
- Placement: terrace, exposed balcony, entrance, pathway — sheltered from strong winds that can break the slender stems.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -15 °C — no protection is needed in most regions.
- Soil type: well-drained and rather poor — potting soil mixed with coarse sand, without excessive fertilisation.
Leave the bamboo stake in place during the first year: eucalyptus grows quickly and its young wood remains flexible until the trunk thickens.
Watering & care
Eucalyptus uses a lot of water while growing, more than most terrace shrubs, but it does not tolerate standing water. A well-drained growing medium is essential in a pot, and the foliage always signals a problem before it gets worse.
- Watering: regular — two to three times a week in summer for this pot size, once every ten days in winter.
- Drainage: essential — never leave standing water in the saucer.
- Pruning: cut back by one third in March to keep the crown compact and encourage young shoots, which are bluer than the older ones.
- Suckers: remove shoots that appear along the trunk, as they spoil the standard form.
- Fertiliser: very little — one application in spring is enough; excess nitrogen turns the foliage green.
Branches cut during pruning keep perfectly well in a dried arrangement: hung upside down in a well-ventilated place, they retain their colour and fragrance for several months.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
Blue-grey is a rare colour outdoors. It brightens a terrace and pairs well with everything. The airy crown lets light through, unlike evergreen shrubs with dense foliage.
- For a duo of Mediterranean greys, pair it with an Olive tree — two silvery foliage types, one with small round leaves and the other with narrow blades.
- For a contrast of volume, place a Bay laurel standard beside it — the laurel's dense, deep-green crown highlights the eucalyptus's bluish lightness.
- To structure a corner, add a Goldcrest Wilma cypress with golden foliage — blue and gold create the clearest contrast between two evergreens.
- To enhance the pot, a container made from natural fibre or terracotta warms up the blue-grey foliage, whereas a grey pot dulls it.
A simple brush against the foliage releases its characteristic fragrance: placed along a passageway, eucalyptus is sensed before it is seen.

- Use almost no fertiliser: eucalyptus grows in poor soil in its native habitat. Excess nitrogen turns the foliage green and causes it to lose the glaucous colour that makes it worth buying.
- Shelter it from wind rather than cold: it withstands -15 °C without issue, but its slender stems and light crown catch the wind like a sail. A sheltered corner is better than an exposed position.
