Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my fig tree not producing figs? Three main causes: lack of light (minimum 4-6 hours of direct sunlight), plant too young (significant production starts after 2-3 years), or pruning done at the wrong time (autumn pruning removes already formed fruit buds). Check these three points before any other diagnosis.
Can the Precose de Dalmatie fig tree stay outside in winter? Yes, it withstands down to -10°C and can stay outdoors year-round in regions with mild winters. For the first two years, protect the base with mulch and cover the plant with a frost cloth if severe freezes are forecast, until the roots are well established.

🍇 Dark purple figs from June-July • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H40 cm | Pot Ø15 cm • ❄️ Hardy -10°C • 🐾 Non-toxic
The Ficus carica 'Early Hardy of Dalmatia' is a Mediterranean fig tree especially valued for its earliness — it produces its dark purple figs from June-July, several weeks before most other varieties. Hardy, drought-tolerant once established, and perfectly suited for container growing.
An easy-to-grow Mediterranean fruit shrub for a sunny balcony or terrace. Discover it in our selection of fruit and aromatic plants and our balconies and terraces collection.
Which fig tree variety to choose?
Each fig tree has its strengths — earliness, hardiness, compactness, or ornamental foliage. Here’s how the Early Hardy of Dalmatia ranks in our fig tree collection:
- Ficus carica 'Early Hardy of Dalmatia' (this plant) — harvest from June-July, dark purple figs, very productive. The earliest.
- Ficus carica 'Panaché' — unique green and cream marbled foliage, edible figs. The most ornamental.
- Ficus carica 'Little Miss Figgy' — very productive dwarf variety, ideal for small spaces. The most compact.
- Ficus carica 'Brown Turkey' — very hardy down to -15 °C, brown-purple figs. The most cold-resistant.
- Ficus carica 'Bornholm' — compact habit, dark purple figs, ideal for balconies. The balanced variety.
The Early Hardy of Dalmatia is the ideal choice if you want an early harvest in the season — its figs arrive as early as June, while other varieties still fruit in August-September.
Exposure & location
The Ficus carica 'Early Hardy of Dalmatia' is a Mediterranean plant — sunlight is its primary condition for generous fruiting.
- Ideal exposure: full sun to partial shade — minimum 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
- Location: sunny balcony or terrace, facing south or southwest.
- Hardiness: resistant down to -10 °C — can stay outside year-round in mild regions.
- Substrate: rich and well-drained — potting soil for fruit trees or enriched universal potting soil.
- Pot: minimum 30–40 cm diameter for good root development.
The sunnier the exposure, the earlier and more abundant the harvest. A north-facing balcony is not suitable — direct sunlight is needed for the figs to ripen properly.
Watering & maintenance
- Watering: moderate — allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times per week in summer, reduced in winter. More regular watering during fruiting.
- Drainage: pot must have drainage holes — no standing water in the saucer.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring-summer with a liquid fertilizer for fruit trees.
- Pruning: light pruning in late winter (February-March) to maintain a compact shape and stimulate fruiting. Do not prune in autumn — fruit buds are already formed.
- Repotting: every 2–3 years in spring into a slightly larger pot.
Water more regularly during fig formation and growth — lack of water causes premature fruit drop before maturity. Check our new plant care guide to get off to a good start.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its large dark green lobed leaves and dark purple figs create a generous and aesthetic Mediterranean composition from early summer.
- In an urban vegetable garden: pair it with lavender, rosemary, or thyme for a coherent and productive Mediterranean urban garden corner.
- Fruit duo: combine it with an organic Blackcurrant to stagger the harvests — figs in June-July, blackcurrants in July-August.
- Ideal pot: natural terracotta or wood — warm materials enhance its Mediterranean character.
Its earliness makes it a strategic plant on a productive terrace — its figs arrive as early as June when other fruit trees are still flowering.
Verdeia Tips
- Prune in late winter, not autumn — the fruit buds for the first harvest (June-July) are already formed on last year's wood by autumn. Autumn pruning would remove them and you would miss the early harvest. Always wait until February-March.
- Water more during fruiting — from June to August, maintain regular watering. A substrate that dries out too much during fig growth causes premature fruit drop.
- Be patient for the first harvest — a young plant takes 2 to 3 years before producing significantly. The variety’s earliness is fully expressed once the shrub is well established.
- Protect it during the first years — Hardy once established, it can suffer from frost before it is well rooted. A winter cover or moving it to a sheltered spot is enough for the first two seasons.
- Drought tolerant once established — after 2 to 3 years of growth, the fig tree develops a deep root system that allows it to endure dry periods without watering. Before that, do not neglect watering.
- 🐾 Non-toxic — the figs are edible and the plant is safe for pets.
