Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Ficus ginseng losing its leaves? Leaf drop is almost always triggered by a change of location, a draft, or a sudden temperature change — choose a stable spot when setting it up and don’t move the plant afterward.
How to maintain the bonsai shape of the Ficus ginseng? Regularly pinch off young shoots as soon as they appear to keep a compact shape — without pruning, the plant grows freely and gradually loses its bonsai silhouette.

🌳 Exposed roots and sculptural trunk • 🌿 Glossy evergreen foliage • ☀️ Bright light without direct sun • 💧 Moderate watering • 🪴 Available in two sizes
The Ficus ginseng, also called Indoor Bonsaï, is a Ficus microcarpa native to tropical Asia recognizable by its thick exposed roots and knotted trunk that give it a natural bonsaï silhouette without requiring complex pruning techniques. A symbol of serenity and longevity, it naturally belongs to the indoor Ficus family and fits perfectly among plants easy to integrate into every room.
Its exceptional longevity makes it a lasting decorative investment: a well-maintained Ficus ginseng can live for several decades indoors. With a strong and calming presence, it suits both a contemporary living room and a minimalist office corner.
Light & location
The Ficus ginseng enjoys bright light without direct sun, which burns its leaves and fades the foliage. It especially appreciates stability: avoid moving it, as it often loses leaves when relocated before readapting. Once placed in a suitable bright spot, it becomes a durable and low-maintenance companion.
- Light: bright indirect light — avoid prolonged direct sun, especially in summer.
- Location: living room, office, bright entrance — away from heat sources and drafts.
- Temperature: 18 to 28 °C — minimum 15 °C in winter.
- Soil type: rich, light, and well-drained — bonsaï or green plant potting mix with added pumice works perfectly.
If your Ficus suddenly loses several leaves after moving or changing rooms, do not repot or change watering: this is temporary stress that resolves in two to three weeks once the plant stabilizes.
Watering & care
The Ficus ginseng prefers moderate and regular watering, never excessive. Before watering, check the finger test method: if the substrate surface is still moist, wait a few days. Non-calcareous water is preferable to preserve the health of the exposed roots. Yellowing leaves almost always indicate overwatering or poor drainage.
- Watering: moderate — once the substrate surface dries, about once a week in spring and summer, less often in winter.
- Drainage: essential — always empty the saucer after watering to avoid water stagnation around the roots.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants or bonsaï once a month in spring and summer only.
- Pruning: regularly pinch young shoots to maintain the bonsaï’s compact shape and encourage branching.
- Repotting: every 2 years in spring with rich, airy substrate, trimming roots slightly to boost growth.
Dust leaves monthly with a soft damp cloth — this promotes photosynthesis and helps quickly spot any scale insects, the most common indoor Ficus pest.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The knotted trunk and exposed roots of the Ficus ginseng make it a true living sculpture: it stands well alone on a console or low furniture and perfectly serves as the centerpiece of a balanced plant arrangement.
- For a zen and minimalist duo, pair the Ficus ginseng with a Zamioculcas with glossy green foliage — the bonsaï’s organic knotted silhouette contrasts with the upright, geometric form of the ZZ, two robust plants with opposite characters that complement without competing.
- For a graphic console arrangement, add a Sansevieria Moonshine with architectural gray-green leaves — the Ficus’s organic roots and the Moonshine’s silver upright leaves create a very effective minimalist dialogue in a contemporary interior.
- For a sculptural presence on low furniture, place the Ficus in a pot Capi Nature Skin anthracite with a matte finish — the understated container amplifies the trunk and roots’ presence without distracting from the plant’s silhouette.
- To highlight natural elegance in soft ceramic, choose a decorative pot Elho Vibes Fold white Ø22 cm with a matte finish — the pure white makes the warm brown trunk and glossy green foliage stand out, ideal for size S.
Never place the Ficus ginseng directly on cold stone or tile floors in winter: its partially aerial roots are sensitive to thermal shocks from below — a wooden saucer or woven rush mat acts as an effective insulator.
Verdeia Tips
- Choose its permanent location at installation: the Ficus ginseng is very sensitive to changes — it often loses leaves when moved then readapts, but each move is unnecessary stress for the plant.
- Pinch young shoots regularly: trim the tips of new shoots as soon as they reach 4 to 6 leaves to maintain the bonsaï’s compact shape — without regular pruning, the plant gradually loses its characteristic form and becomes untidy.
- Rotate the pot monthly: regular rotation ensures balanced foliage on all sides and compensates for branches’ natural tendency to grow toward the light source, preserving silhouette symmetry.
