Frequently Asked Questions
When to prune a lacecap hydrangea without removing the flowers? Prune only in spring, removing only the old dry flower heads above the first strong bud — the hydrangea blooms on last year's wood and pruning too severely removes already formed flower buds.
What exposure to choose for a hydrangea in a pot on a balcony? A north or east-facing balcony is ideal — the hydrangea tolerates full sun only if the soil remains constantly cool, which is difficult to maintain in a pot during summer heat.

🤍 7 to 12 large flat white umbels per plant • 🌿 Flowering from June to September • 🌤️ Partial shade or soft light • ❄️ Very hardy • 📏 H45 cm | Pot Ø23 cm
The Hydrangea Teller 'Benxi' is a lacecap hydrangea native to Switzerland, selected in the 1970s at the Wädenswil Federal Research Station in the Teller series — "plate" in German, referring to the flat shape of its inflorescences. Its large white umbels feature two types of flowers: small fertile flowers in the center, surrounded by a crown of large sterile pure white flowers. Delivered with 7 to 12 flower heads per plant, it transforms balconies, terraces, and gardens into a floral composition of very natural elegance.
Vigorous, very hardy and tolerant of partial shade, it is one of the most appreciated summer-flowering shrubs for partially shaded spaces — a rare quality among large flowering plants.
Which hydrangea to choose?
Verdeia offers several hydrangeas with distinct shapes and colors. Here is how to place the Teller 'Benxi' among the varieties in the catalog:
- Hydrangea Teller 'Benxi' (this plant) — large flat white umbels (lacecap), 7 to 12 heads per plant, flowering June-September. The most natural and wild variety, very attractive to pollinators.
- Hydrangea Early Rosa — large very dense pink balls, early flowering. The classic choice for an intense color ball effect.
- Hydrangea Early Blue — large intense blue balls, early flowering. The choice for a bright and spectacular blue in pot or garden.
- Hydrangea Crystal Palace — deep violet-blue balls, compact habit. The choice for dense violet tones on a sunny terrace.
- Hydrangea arborescens 'Strong Annabelle' — very large white balls, sturdy stems that do not bend under the weight. The choice for a pure and voluminous white that is very structuring.
- Hydrangea petiolaris — climbing hydrangea with flat white umbels, clings by itself to walls. The only climbing hydrangea in the catalog, ideal for dressing a shaded wall.
Exposure & location
The Teller 'Benxi' appreciates soft light in partial shade — it tolerates full sun only if the soil remains constantly fresh. A location sheltered from the burning afternoon sun is ideal, especially in pot on a terrace, where the substrate dries out quickly. The flat shape of its inflorescences naturally attracts bees and bumblebees.
- Exposure: Partial shade or soft light — sheltered from burning sun between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m.
- Location: north or east-facing balcony, shaded terrace, garden under partial cover.
- Soil: rich, humus-rich, fresh, and slightly acidic — avoid calcareous soils that turn white flowers pink.
- In pot: large deep container with acidic substrate for hydrangeas — preferably water with rainwater.
Water exclusively with rainwater or demineralized water — tap water with lime neutralizes the substrate's acidity and can turn white flowers pink in a few seasons.
Watering & maintenance
The hydrangea is a heavy water consumer — in pot, insufficient watering is the main cause of flower wilting. Pruning is light: only remove old flower heads in spring, keeping as much wood from the previous year that will bear flowers. A careful restart in spring and a specific hydrangea fertilizer in March-April ensure dense flowering.
- Watering: abundant and regular — the soil must never dry out completely, especially in pot in summer; preferably water with rainwater.
- Pruning: only in spring — remove old dry flower heads above the first strong bud; never prune green wood.
- Fertilizer: specific for hydrangeas (acidifying) in March and June — avoid generic fertilizers that neutralize acidity.
- Repotting: every 2 years in spring with acidifying substrate for hydrangeas.
- Winter care: very hardy in open ground; in pot, protect the container from frost with a cover or bring it indoors to a frost-free space.
If the leaves wilt despite moist soil, it is a symptom of soil that is too alkaline — adding acidifying fertilizer for hydrangeas quickly corrects the situation and revives the foliage’s brightness.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The pure white and graphic shape of the flat umbels of 'Benxi' make it a very versatile plant — it fits equally well in a romantic composition or a structured contemporary garden, and naturally pairs with pink, purple tones or dark foliage for a green and elegant terrace.
- For a very romantic white and pink combination, the Hydrangea arborescens 'Pink Annabelle' pink perfectly complements the white 'Benxi' — the two hydrangeas with contrasting shapes (flat umbels vs round balls) create a very natural and elegant two-tone composition in the same corner of the terrace.
- For a bright white and pink springtime combination, the Rhododendron 'Bollywood' variegated pink blooms in April-May before the hydrangea takes over in June — the two partial shade shrubs succeed each other for a flowering terrace from winter to early autumn.
- For a very elegant lasting background in winter, the Camellia japonica 'Nuccio's Gem' white blooms from February-March when the hydrangea is still past its peak — the white camellia covers the winter, the hydrangea takes over in summer, and both shrubs remain green and decorative all year round.
- To enhance the white in a contemporary container, the pot Capi Nature Groove taupe provides a natural, matte background that highlights the purity of the white umbels — the ribbed texture of the pot made from recycled material creates a very elegant harmony with the natural and wild character of this lacecap hydrangea.
The Teller 'Benxi' is the hydrangea that attracts the most pollinators — its fertile central flowers are accessible to bees and bumblebees, unlike mophead hydrangeas whose flowers are all sterile; place it in a visible corner to enjoy this lively ballet all summer.
Verdeia tips
- Water only with rain or demineralized water: hard tap water is the main enemy of potted hydrangea — it gradually neutralizes the substrate's acidity, fades the flowers, and weakens the plant; collect rainwater or use demineralized water for all watering.
- Prune as little as possible and only in spring: hydrangea blooms on last year's wood — severe or late pruning removes already formed flower buds and deprives the plant of its flowering; remove only old dry heads above the first strong bud in March.
- Keep flower heads dry in winter: old dried inflorescences on the stem naturally protect flower buds from frost — do not remove them in autumn; leave them in place until spring, they are also very decorative under frost.
