Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my lavender not flowering or flowering very little? Two main causes: lack of sunlight (it needs at least 6 hours of direct sun per day) or excess nitrogen fertilizer which promotes foliage at the expense of flowers. Move it to a sunnier spot and limit fertilizer use. Insufficient pruning can also reduce flowering over time.
Is Hidcote Blue lavender cold-hardy? Yes, Lavandula angustifolia Hidcote Blue is hardy down to -15 degrees C in the ground. In pots, the roots are more exposed to frost — protect the container with a frost cloth or move it closer to a sheltered wall during severe cold.

🌸 Intense violet-blue flower spikes • 🌿 Aromatic silvery foliage • ☀️ Full sun essential • 💧 Light watering • 📏 H20 cm | Pot Ø12 cm • ❄️ Hardy down to -15°C • 🦋 Honey plant • 🐾 Non-toxic
Lavender Hidcote Blue (Lavandula angustifolia) is a compact lavender with a powerful fragrance and flower spikes of a violet-blue almost indigo color. Its silvery gray-green evergreen foliage releases its essential oils at the slightest touch. Its flowering from June to August attracts butterflies and bees — a plus for the biodiversity of your balcony or terrace.
Hardy, drought-tolerant, and very easy to care for, it is one of the most reliable aromatic plants for a Mediterranean urban garden in full sun. Discover it in our selection of plants for balconies and terraces.
Exposure & location
Lavender Hidcote Blue is a sun-loving plant — without at least 6 hours of direct light per day, it will become leggy and flower little. This is its non-negotiable requirement.
- Ideal exposure: full sun — south or southwest-facing balcony or terrace.
- To avoid: partial shade and shade which reduce flowering, fragrance, and plant longevity.
- In a pot: preferably choose a terracotta or light ceramic pot — porous materials regulate moisture better and prevent root overheating.
- Substrate: well-draining — universal potting soil mixed with 30% sand or gravel.
- Hardiness: resistant down to -15 °C — protect the pot from severe cold in winter.
The sunnier its location, the more flower spikes it will have and the stronger its fragrance. Heat concentrates the essential oils in the foliage — gently rub the leaves to release it.
Watering & care
- Watering: light — water only when the substrate is dry deep down.
- Frequency: once a week during hot summer weather, every 2 weeks in spring and autumn, very little in winter.
- Drainage: essential — pot must have drainage holes, clay pebbles at the bottom, saucer always emptied.
- Fertilizer: light in spring, use flowering plant fertilizer. Avoid excess nitrogen, which promotes foliage at the expense of flowers and fragrance.
- Pruning: after flowering, cut back faded flower stems and trim the foliage by about one-third to maintain a compact shape.
- Harvest: pick the spikes at the start of flowering to dry them — tie into bouquets and hang upside down in a dry, airy place.
Lavender hates stagnant moisture — it’s the main cause of pot mortality. Perfect drainage is more important than watering frequency. When in doubt, always wait an extra day before watering.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The Lavender Hidcote Blue is a plant that is decorative, aromatic, and useful. It naturally fits into a Mediterranean or minimalist setting.
- Solo on a sunny balcony: in a terracotta pot, it instantly brings an aromatic and colorful atmosphere. Discover our ideas for balconies and terraces.
- In an aromatic arrangement: pair it with rosemary, thyme, or sage from our aromatic plants selection to create a fragrant and functional herb corner.
- With other sun-loving plants: combine it with a Calamondin or an olive tree for a cohesive Hardy Mediterranean urban garden ensemble.
- Ideal pot: natural terracotta, stoneware, or beige ceramic — warm, porous materials enhance its aromatic character.
Its flowering from June to August naturally attracts pollinators — place it near your other flowering plants to encourage biodiversity on your terrace.
Verdeia Tips
- Foliage yellowing or blackening at the base: excess moisture — this is the number one symptom of poor drainage or overwatering. Reduce watering immediately, empty the saucer, and check that the pot’s bottom drains well.
- Weak flowering: lack of sun or excess fertilizer — without 6 hours of direct sun, lavender will not flower abundantly. Too much nitrogen fertilizer promotes foliage at the expense of flowers. Move to a sunnier spot and limit feeding.
- Bare and woody growth: lack of pruning — lavender becomes bare at the base if not pruned regularly. Cut back by one third after each flowering — never into old wood, always on the green part.
- Prune after flowering, never late autumn — pruning too late in autumn exposes new shoots to frost. Wait until spring if you missed the post-flowering pruning.
- Protect the pot in winter — Hardy in the ground, potted lavender is more vulnerable because the roots are exposed to frost. Insulate the pot with a cover or move it closer to a sheltered wall.
- 🐾 Non-toxic — lavender is safe for dogs and cats. It is even one of the most pet-friendly aromatic plants.
