Ligustrum delavayanum, or Delavay privet, bears small oval, deep-green leaves on dense, flexible branches. Native to the mountains of southwestern China, it is the most versatile of the terrace shrubs for pruning.
Its distinctive feature is its response to pruning: its small leaves and dense branching make it the most widely used topiary specimen after boxwood. Where laurel shows every cut, Ligustrum creates a clean outline and seals its wounds within a few weeks.
Light & placement
Privet tolerates a very wide range of light conditions, making it one of the easiest evergreens to place on a terrace or in a courtyard.
- Light: sun to partial shade — it even tolerates low-light locations, with slower growth.
- Placement: terrace, entrance, pathway, balcony, inner courtyard.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -15 °C — it may lose some of its foliage during the harshest winters, then grow back in spring.
- Soil type: ordinary and well-draining — Ligustrum adapts to almost any growing medium.
It is semi-evergreen: in very cold climates, it may partially lose its leaves in winter before regrowing them from April onwards.
Watering & care
Privet is one of the most tolerant shrubs in the catalogue, but its rapid growth calls for regular pruning to maintain its shape. A well-draining growing medium is sufficient for growing it in a pot, and the foliage always signals a problem before it worsens.
- Watering: moderate — once or twice a week in summer for this pot size, greatly reduced in winter.
- Drainage: essential — never leave standing water in the saucer.
- Pruning: two to three times a year, from May to September — Ligustrum regrows quickly and tolerates hard pruning.
- Suckers: remove shoots that appear along the trunk, as they spoil the standard form.

- To frame an entrance, place two identical plants on either side of the door, in matching containers — symmetry works year-round with an evergreen.
- For a trio of clipped forms, pair it with a Double-Ball Topiary Cypress — two geometric forms that complement each other, one green and the other golden.
- For foliage contrast, place a Photinia 'Carré Rouge' beside it — the privet's solid green highlights the Photinia's red new growth.
- To balance a deciduous plant, complete the arrangement with Magnolia stellata — the privet fills the space in winter, while the magnolia takes over in spring.
Its flexible branches also take well to training or braiding: it is the species nurseries use for the most complex forms.

- Prune without hesitation: Ligustrum is one of the few shrubs that regrows perfectly from old wood. An unbalanced or sparse crown can be restored in a single season, whereas rosemary or Ceanothus would retain the gap permanently.
- Plan for two to three prunings a year: its rapid growth causes it to lose its shape within a few months. Light cuts in May, July and September require less effort than one severe annual pruning.
- Don't worry about partial leaf drop in winter: delavayanum is semi-evergreen. In cold climates, it may become slightly sparse in January and regrow all its foliage by April.
