💙 Blue fescue • 💛 Yellow variegated sedge • 🤍 Cream-edged sedge • ❤️ Copper-red uncinia • 🌿 Evergreen foliage • ⛅ Sun or partial shade • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H50 cm | 4 pots Ø17 cm
This set of 4 grasses brings together four evergreen foliage plants in four colors, each in its 17 cm pot: a Festuca glauca 'Intense Blue' with a silvery-blue clump, a yellow-cream and green striped Carex oshimensis 'Evergold', a green Carex morrowii 'Ice Dance' edged in cream, and a copper-red Uncinia 'Everflame'. Species originating from Europe, Japan and New Zealand, they are among the cold-hardy plants that retain their colors all winter.
Delivered as already formed clumps, they fill out a planter as soon as they are planted. The uncinia brings red, a rare shade among hardy grasses, found in no other grass-like foliage plant in the catalogue.
Which grass should you choose?
The grasses and grass-like foliage plants in the catalogue:
- Set of 4 grasses (this plant) — blue, yellow, green and red, 4 pots Ø17 cm. The only composition with red foliage.
- Trio of grasses — blue fescue, yellow sedge and hair grass, 3 pots Ø17 cm. The most dynamic, for full sun.
- Blue fescue 'Azura Blue' — silvery-blue ball, in Ø14 or Ø19 cm. The most compact.
- Carex 'Ice Dance' — green leaves edged in cream, in Ø14 cm. For a single pot in partial shade.
- Miscanthus 'Strictus' — tall upright leaves striped with yellow, in Ø19 or Ø23 cm. The tallest, for a light screen.
Exposure & location
All four plants share a bright exposure without scorching: morning sun or light partial shade. The fescue retains a more intense blue in the sun, while the two sedges and the uncinia prefer a little shade during the hottest hours.
- Exposure: morning sun or partial shade — avoid the full afternoon southern sun, which dries out the uncinia's tips.
- Location: balcony planter, patio container, entrance border, base of a shrub.
- Hardiness in pots: down to -15 °C for the fescue and sedges, around -10 °C for the uncinia.
- Soil type: well-draining potting soil that retains some moisture.
Place the red uncinia between the blue fescue and yellow carex: its copper tones stand out best between these two light colours.
Watering & care
Unlike fescue, uncinia and carex do not like to dry out completely: browning leaf tips indicate that the substrate has remained dry for too long, while a pot standing in water exposes the plant to overwatering and damaged roots.
- Watering: moderate — when the substrate is dry on the surface, more often in summer; greatly reduced in winter.
- Water: tap water is suitable.
- Fertiliser: a light application in spring is sufficient.
- Pruning: in spring, comb through the clumps with your fingers to remove dry leaves; never cut them right back.
- Repotting: every two or three years, dividing clumps that have become too wide.
In a shared planter, plant the fescue near the edge, where the substrate dries out fastest, and the uncinia in the centre, where it stays moist.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Their fine foliage lightens evergreen shrubs and pairs well with balcony plants for shade that share the same soft light.
- For a red balcony in winter, pair them with a Nandina Obsessed™ 'Seika' — its young red leaves echo the uncinia and add height behind the clumps.
- To add flowers to the planter in winter, add a Helleborus 'Christmas Carol' — its white flowers open from December to February, when grasses are the only colourful foliage.
- To extend the yellow of the carex, place a Leucothoe 'Curly Gold' beside it — its golden, curled leaves echo the shade of 'Evergold' with a broader texture.
- To enhance the pot, choose the taupe Capi Nature Groove pot — its warm shade complements the copper tones of the uncinia, while its vertical grooves echo the upright foliage.
Arranged in a line in a planter, alternate light and dark colors: fescue, uncinia, yellow carex, cream-edged carex.
Verdeia tips
- Protect the uncinia in very cold weather: it is the least hardy of the four. Below -10 °C, move its pot closer to a wall and cover it with a fleece; if the tips have frozen, a few simple steps can help save a frost-damaged plant.
- Do not cut the carex back to ground level: its evergreen foliage regrows slowly from the center. Remove only the dry leaves by hand in March, without touching the colored leaves.
- Divide the clumps after three years: when the center becomes sparse, cut the root ball in half in spring and replant each half, as explained in the plant propagation guide.

Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.

What to do upon receiving my plant?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What to do if my plant arrives damaged?
