The Magnolia 'Susan' bears large, upright tulip-shaped flowers, pink-purple on the outside and lighter inside, with a delicate fragrance. A hybrid from the American Little Girls breeding program, it is one of the most reliable patio shrubs in spring.
Its distinctive feature is the timing of its flowering: 'Susan' opens in April-May, two to six weeks after early-flowering magnolias. This delay was deliberately achieved by breeders so the flowers would escape late frosts, which ruin the flowering of March varieties every year.
Which standard magnolia should you choose?
Two cultivars trained on a standard, with very different flowering periods:
- Magnolia 'Susan' (this plant) — large tulip-shaped, pink-purple flowers, flowering in April-May. The latest flowering, escaping frosts.
- Magnolia stellata — star-shaped white flowers from March, before the leaves (H90 cm | Pot Ø19 cm). The earliest and brightest flowering.
Exposure & location
The 'Susan' flowers abundantly in sun or partial shade. Its late flowering avoids most of the risk of frost, allowing it to be placed where early-flowering magnolias cannot.
- Exposure: sun to partial shade — 4 hours of direct sun are enough for beautiful flowering.
- Location: patio, entrance, pathway, balcony — all orientations, as its late flowering avoids the risk of morning frost.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -20 °C.
- Soil type: rich, moist and rather acidic — planting compost mixed with ericaceous soil, never calcareous.
A magnolia planted in calcareous soil gradually yellows between the veins: this is chlorosis, which can only be prevented with an acidic substrate.
Watering & care
Magnolias have shallow, fleshy roots that are just as sensitive to drought as to suffocation. A cool but well-draining substrate is the right combination, and the foliage always signals a problem before it worsens.
- Watering: regular — the substrate should remain cool from April to September without ever becoming waterlogged.
- Water: preferably non-calcareous — hard water gradually alkalizes the substrate.
- Mulching: recommended — a layer of bark keeps the soil cool and protects the shallow roots.
- Pruning: very light and only after flowering — magnolias heal poorly and dislike being pruned.
- Suckers: remove shoots that appear along the trunk; they ruin the standard form.
- Fertilizer: fertilizer for ericaceous plants, once at the beginning of spring.
The large, fuzzy buds visible all winter are the future flowers: they form the previous summer, which explains why autumn pruning eliminates the entire bloom.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The tulip-shaped upright flowers are visible from a distance on a terrace, and their rich purplish-pink color holds its own against colorful furniture, where white would be absorbed.
- To extend the flowering period, pair it with Magnolia stellata — stellata flowers in March, and 'Susan' takes over in April–May.
- To fill the winter gap, place a standard bay laurel beside it — its evergreen foliage fills the space from November to March, when the magnolia is bare.
- For foliage contrast, add an Eucalyptus 'Azura' — the eucalyptus's blue-gray foliage highlights the purplish-pink flowers.
- To enhance the pot, a terracotta or natural-fiber container keeps the substrate cooler than a black pot exposed to the sun.
The flowers open gradually over three to four weeks, extending the display much longer than simultaneous flowering.

- Choose it if your springs are unpredictable: 'Susan' was selected to flower late, after the frost period. Where a March-flowering magnolia loses its flowers every other year, this one flowers every spring.
- Never prune in autumn or winter: flower buds form from the previous summer. Pruning after September removes all the following year's flowers.
- Mulch the base and never water with calcareous water: magnolia roots are shallow and the species dislikes lime. Bark mulch and soft water alone solve most container-growing problems.
