🌿 Iconic cut foliage • 🪴 Natural woven basket included • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H60 cm | Natural basket Ø21 cm • ⚠️ Toxic to pets
The Monstera deliciosa, also called Swiss cheese plant or False philodendron, is the most iconic tropical indoor plant. Its large perforated and cut leaves — the fenestrations — are a natural adaptation that allows it to filter light in the Central American understory where it climbs trees. The more mature and well-lit the plant, the more cut its leaves will be.
This version is presented in a natural woven basket — ready to display with no repotting or extra purchases needed. Discover it in our Monstera collection and our large indoor plants guide.
Which Monstera variety to choose?
Each Monstera has its own character — size, foliage, and habit vary significantly. Here are the available profiles:
- Monstera deliciosa with basket (this plant) — large fenestrated leaves, medium size D21 x H60 cm, woven basket included. The classic ready-to-display version.
- Classic Monstera deliciosa — same large cut leaves, more compact size, no basket. The most accessible.
- Monstera Thai Constellation — unique cream-marble variegated leaves, rare collector’s plant. The most sought-after.
- Monstera adansonii — smaller leaves with oval holes, climbing or trailing habit. The light and airy version.
Unsure between Monstera and Philodendron? Our comparison guide helps you choose based on your space and preferences.
Exposure & placement
The Monstera deliciosa is a tropical understory plant — it likes light but not direct sun. The quality of light directly affects the shape of its leaves.
- Ideal exposure: bright indirect light — near an east- or west-facing window, or a few meters from a south-facing window.
- Tolerates: partial shade — but new leaves will be less cut and growth slower.
- Avoid: direct sunlight that burns the leaves, very dark rooms that produce whole leaves without fenestrations.
- Temperature: 18–27 °C, without cold drafts.
- Soil: rich and well-drained — universal potting soil with a bit of perlite.
The more indirect light your Monstera receives, the more its new leaves will develop beautiful fenestrations. Lack of light results in whole leaves without cuts — this is the first sign to watch for.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — water when the top 2–3 cm of soil is dry.
- Frequency: once a week in summer, every 10–15 days in winter.
- Water: room temperature, filtered or left to rest for 24 hours if possible.
- Drainage: essential — no standing water in the saucer.
- Humidity: regularly mist the foliage to recreate the tropical atmosphere.
- Fertilizer: liquid green plant fertilizer once a month from April to September.
- Cleaning: dust the large leaves with a damp cloth to maintain their shine.
The Monstera naturally develops aerial roots — don’t cut them. Guide them toward the soil or let them hang freely. For everything about watering, check out our complete watering guide.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The Monstera deliciosa is an architectural plant — it structures a space on its own. The natural woven basket fits all styles, from minimalist to Bohemian.
- Solo in a bright corner: placed directly in its basket, it needs nothing else to stand out in a living room or entryway.
- In a tropical arrangement: pair it with a Strelitzia or an Alocasia for a contrast of shapes and heights.
- With trailing plants: a Pothos or a Monstera adansonii placed up high creates a very effective play of vertical levels.
- The basket: it naturally pairs well with rattan, light wood, and terracotta — a consistent combo of natural materials.
If you add a moss pole, the aerial roots will cling to it and the Monstera will develop even larger and more cut leaves — this is its natural behavior as it climbs trees.
Verdeia Tips
- Leaves without cuts: lack of light — young leaves are always whole, which is normal. But if new leaves on an adult plant continue to emerge without fenestrations, move it closer to a window.
- Yellow leaves: overwatering — this is the number one cause. Let the substrate dry out more between waterings and always empty the saucer after watering.
- Do not cut aerial roots — they are useful and part of the plant. Direct them toward the substrate to feed or let them hang freely.
- Stake for larger leaves — a moss stake allows aerial roots to cling and stimulates the production of larger, more cut leaves.
- Repot in spring when roots overflow — Monstera is a fast-growing plant. See our repotting guide to know when and how to proceed.
- ⚠️ Toxic to pets and humans — contains irritating calcium oxalates. Keep out of reach of cats, dogs, and young children. See our plants and pets guide for suitable alternatives.
