Frequently Asked Questions
How to prune a potted black mulberry tree? Prune lightly in February only, before the sap rises — remove dead wood and crossing branches, never after March because the mulberry heals late cuts poorly.
Does the black mulberry 'Mulle' produce fruit in its first year? Fruiting usually starts in the second year after planting, provided the tree is placed in a warm, sunny spot and given organic fertilizer in spring.

🌿 Certified organic cultivation • 🍇 Sweet-tart blackberries from July to September • ☀️ Sun / Partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to -15 °C • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H45 cm | Pot Ø13 cm
Morus nigra 'Mulle', or Korean black mulberry, is a small organic fruit tree native to Korea, selected for its compact shape and abundant production of juicy sweet-tart blackberries. Its dark green deciduous foliage — turning golden yellow in autumn — and rounded silhouette make it a reliable choice in the fruit and aromatic plants collection, perfect for balconies and terraces as well as small urban gardens.
Self-fertile and suitable for pots or open ground, it is one of the most accessible fruit trees to combine visual pleasure and delicious harvests without a large garden.
Exposure & Location
The 'Mulle' mulberry thrives in full sun but tolerates bright partial shade — it grows well in a large deep container or well-drained open ground. A warm spot sheltered from cold winds extends the harvest season.
- Exposure: full sun or partial shade (minimum 4 to 6 hours per day).
- Location: balcony, terrace, patio, small garden — in a deep pot or open ground.
- Soil: rich, light, well-drained — tolerates most garden soils.
- In pot: container at least 40 cm deep, well-drained.
Against a south-facing wall, the heat accumulated during the day intensifies the fruit flavor and can advance the harvest by two to three weeks.
Watering & Care
Once established, the black mulberry requires little intervention. In pots, be careful not to leave the substrate waterlogged in winter — excess water during cold periods is the main cause of decline. An organic fertilizer application in spring is enough to support fruiting.
- Watering: regular in summer, very sparse in winter — let the substrate dry between waterings.
- Pruning: in November-December on bare wood — remove crossing branches, shorten the longest by one third.
- Fertilizer: organic in spring for pots — unnecessary in well-amended open ground.
- Mulching: 8 to 10 cm at the base in open ground to retain moisture and naturally nourish the soil.
Harvest by hand when the fruits detach easily — ripe blackberries stain permanently, avoid light-colored surfaces under the tree.
Decor Ideas & Plant Combinations
The contrast between the rough dark green foliage of the mulberry, its bright red-black fruits, and its rounded structure creates an atmosphere both rustic and graphic, ideal for a Mediterranean garden or an outdoor jungle.
- For a gourmet terrace with two harvests, pair it with the organic blueberry 'Reka' — similar size, shiny foliage contrasting with the mulberry’s rough leaves, and two complementary harvest seasons.
- In a large container on a balcony, a terracotta ceramic decorative pot matches the red-black tones of the summer fruits and the golden yellow of the autumn foliage — a warm and coherent palette throughout the season.
- For a structured urban orchard in open ground, the thornless mulberry 'Black Satin' with its spreading shrub form offers a silhouette contrast with the more upright 'Mulle', while extending the harvest into autumn.
- To complete the composition with spring color, the organic raspberry 'Malling Promise' provides white blossoms and an early summer harvest before the mulberry reaches maturity.
The mulberry loses its leaves early in autumn, revealing some small decorative orange fruits that persist on the branches — place it in a spot visible from indoors to enjoy this display after the season.
Verdeia Tips
- Keep the soil slightly moist throughout fruiting: water stress in July-August causes premature fruit drop before full maturity, significantly reducing the weight and flavor of the harvest.
- Prefer pruning on bare wood in November-December: pruning after complete leaf fall allows better visualization of the tree structure, identification of branches to remove, and cleaner healing before winter dormancy.
- Repot only when roots emerge from drainage: the mulberry fruits better when slightly root-bound — premature repotting stimulates vegetative growth at the expense of fruit.
