🤍 Pure white flowers, 2 to 3 per stem • 🌸 Soft, sweet fragrance • 🌿 30 to 35 cm stems • 🌤️ Flowers in April • 💐 Beautiful in bouquets • ⛅ Sun or partial shade • ❄️ Very hardy • 🔁 Naturalizes and flowers again every year • 📏 Bulb size 10/12
Narcissus 'Thalia' is the most elegant of the white narcissi: in April, each 30 to 35 cm stem bears two to three pure white, slightly drooping flowers with gracefully swept-back petals, earning it the nickname “orchid narcissus.” Its soft, sweet fragrance is noticeable as soon as you get close. It is a horticultural selection from Europe (the Netherlands), derived from a wild narcissus native to the Iberian Peninsula, and one of the oldest varieties still in cultivation.
It flowers after the yellow daffodils and brings a bright, elegant touch to flower beds, pots, and partially shaded spots. Among our flower bulbs, this is the variety that returns most reliably every spring, gradually forming generous clumps.
Which narcissus should you choose?
- Narcissus 'Thalia' (this plant) — pure white and fragrant, 30 to 35 cm tall, with two to three flowers per stem in April. For elegant flower beds, pots, and bouquets.
- Daffodil 'Carlton' — large yellow daffodil, 40 to 45 cm tall, with one large flower per stem in March-April. For gardens, lawns, and bouquets.
- Narcissus 'Tête-à-Tête' — dwarf yellow daffodil, 15 to 20 cm tall, with two to three small flowers per stem from February. For pots and planters.
Planted all three together, they flower from February to the end of April: Tête-à-Tête opens the season, Carlton follows in March, and Thalia finishes in April.
How many bulbs should you choose?
Thalia makes the biggest impact in clumps: allow 30 to 40 bulbs per square metre, or 8 to 10 bulbs in a pot 25 cm in diameter.
- 15 bulbs: about 0.5 m², or two pots on a terrace or balcony.
- 30 bulbs: about 1 m², for a white clump at the foot of a shrub or in a flower bed.
- 60 bulbs: about 2 m², for a white border along a path.
- 120 bulbs: about 4 m², for naturalizing a wooded area or a patch of lawn.
The larger the pack, the lower the price per bulb: the 120-bulb pack costs less than half as much per bulb as the 15-bulb pack.
Planting & placement
Plant the bulbs from September to December, as long as the ground is not frozen, for blooms in April.
- Exposure: sun or partial shade; in partial shade, the white flowers stand out even more.
- Depth: 10 to 12 cm, point facing up.
- Spacing: 10 cm between bulbs in the ground, 5 cm in a pot.
- Soil type: ordinary and well-drained; it only dislikes standing water.
- Hardiness: down to -25 °C in the ground, with no protection needed.
Plant it near an entrance, a bench, or a window: its fragrance is best enjoyed up close, especially at the end of the day.
Watering & care
Rain is enough for plants in the ground. In a pot, check the moisture with the finger test before each watering.
- Watering: light — at planting, then in a pot when the potting soil is dry on the surface, especially when the buds emerge.
- Fertilizer: unnecessary in the ground; in a pot, use bulb fertilizer when the leaves emerge.
- Spent flowers: cut them off once they have wilted, so the bulb keeps its energy instead of producing seeds.
- After flowering: let the foliage turn yellow for six weeks before cutting it back; this replenishes the bulb for the following year.
Its slender leaves turn yellow discreetly: plant it among perennials or grasses that will take over in summer.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
Its bright white calms the vivid colors of spring and brightens partial-shade corners, as our guide which plants are right for my balcony shows.
- For a blue and white duo, plant Armenian grape hyacinth at its feet — its blue clusters bloom at the same time and highlight the white of the daffodils.
- To soften a colorful flower bed, mix it with mixed Darwin tulips — they bloom together in April, and the white brings the reds, yellows, and pinks together.
- For an evergreen planter, pair it with Skimmia japonica 'Rubella' — its dark green foliage and red buds make the white flowers stand out.
- For a patio version, plant 8 to 10 bulbs in the Elho Greenville Round leafy green pot in Ø25 cm — the green highlights the white, and the pot's drainage hole prevents standing water.
In a pot, plant them in layers: Thalia at the bottom, 12 cm deep, and grape hyacinths above, 7 cm deep, for a fragrant blue and white display in April.
Verdeia tips
- Enjoy its fragrance in a vase: cut a few stems when the first bud opens. They will perfume a room for a week, like the other fragrant plants on the balcony.
- Leave them alone for a few hours before adding them to a mixed bouquet: the sap of freshly cut daffodils makes other flowers wilt. First, place them alone in a vase, then arrange them with other flowers without recutting the stems.
- Give it as a gift in a pot: a pot of fragrant white daffodils makes an elegant springtime gift, as shown in our ideas for plants to give as gifts.
