The Olea europaea, or olive tree, is an evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean basin, an emblem of the southern landscape since Antiquity. Its sculpted, curving trunk, narrow silver foliage that quivers in the slightest breeze, and slender silhouette give it an incomparable architectural presence. It is the ultimate choice for a Mediterranean urban garden.
Its distinctive feature lies in its longevity and the way it ages: the trunk hollows and takes shape year after year, so a ten-year-old olive tree in pot becomes a decorative piece in its own right. Three sizes are available, from a balcony plant to a large terrace specimen.
Light & placement
The olive tree is a sun-loving plant, and this is non-negotiable. At least five hours of direct sunlight per day are essential for a beautiful silhouette and dense silver foliage. Below this, growth slows and the foliage loses its characteristic color.
- Light: full sun — at least 5 h of direct sunlight per day.
- Placement: south- or southwest-facing balcony or terrace, garden, sunny patio.
- Overwintering: can spend the winter in front of a very bright south-facing window in cold regions, but should be moved back outdoors as soon as spring arrives.
- Hardiness in pot: down to -2 °C — protect or bring indoors below this temperature.
Turn the pot a quarter turn every two to three months: an olive tree exposed from only one side develops an asymmetrical crown that is difficult to correct later.
Watering & care
The olive tree is one of the most drought-tolerant plants in the catalog: its deep roots and leathery leaves allow it to go several weeks without water when planted in the ground. In pot, a very well-draining substrate is essential, and the foliage always signals a problem before it gets worse.
- Watering: moderate — let the substrate dry out to a depth of 3 cm between waterings; never leave standing water in the saucer.
- Substrate: light and very well-draining — potting mix amended with coarse sand or perlite; never use a heavy mix.
- Pruning: light pruning after flowering to shape the silhouette — the olive tree tolerates it well but does not require it.
- Winter: reduce watering considerably and bring the pot indoors if frost is forecast.
- Fertilizer: fertilizer for Mediterranean shrubs once a month from April to August only.
In winter, an olive tree in pot tolerates temperatures close to 0 °C if the substrate is dry: it is the combination of moisture and frost that kills it, never the cold alone.
