Frequently Asked Questions
Is Pennisetum a perennial plant? Yes, it is a deciduous perennial grass — it loses its leaves in winter and regrows vigorously in spring from the base. With annual pruning and a sunny location, it can last for many years.
Can Pennisetum be planted in a pot on a terrace? Yes, its compact rounded shape makes it an excellent container plant. Choose a pot at least 25 cm in diameter with well-drained soil. In a pot, it dries out faster — water regularly during the first weeks after planting.

🌾 Compact rounded clump • 🤍 Creamy white feathery spikes July-September • 🍂 Golden foliage in autumn • ☀️ Full sun to partial shade • 💧 Drought tolerant • 🐾 Non-toxic
Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Hameln', known as Fountain Grass, is a deciduous ornamental grass native to East Asia. Its fine, arching leaves form a compact rounded clump that is covered with creamy white feathery spikes from July to September, then turns bright golden in autumn. H40 cm | Pot Ø19 cm at delivery.
Hardy, wind and drought tolerant, non-toxic. Discover it in our selection of urban perennials and grasses.
Which grasses to combine?
Pennisetum 'Hameln' pairs perfectly with other grasses and plants with contrasting foliage:
- Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Hameln' (this plant) — compact rounded clump, creamy white spikes. The most floriferous in summer.
- Festuca glauca 'Azura Blue' — spiky, silvery blue evergreen clump, more compact size. The ideal warm-cool contrast with the green of Pennisetum.
- Carex morrowii 'Ice Dance' — variegated green and cream foliage, evergreen. The brightest.
- Phormium 'Rubra Nana' — coppery red strap-like foliage, fan-shaped habit. The strongest color contrast.
Exposure & location
- Ideal exposure: full sun — good exposure encourages abundant flowering.
- Tolerates: light partial shade, wind, sea spray, urban pollution.
- Soil: well-drained, moderately fertile — not too heavy or too wet.
- Hardiness: good to very good — withstands mild winters.
- Uses: flower bed, container, gravel garden, wildflower meadow, border.
In full sun, its feathery spikes develop generously and its golden autumn color is more intense. Check our spring preparation guide for the right seasonal care.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate to low — drought tolerant once established.
- Pruning: cut the clump down to one-third of its height in March, before new growth starts.
- Foliage: deciduous — leave the dried stems in place all winter, they are decorative and protect the plant’s crown from frost.
- Fertilizer: little needed — a light feed in spring is enough.
Spring pruning is the only really important step — without it, new shoots struggle to emerge from old stems. Check our care calendar so you don’t miss this key step.
Decoration ideas & plant combinations
Its creamy white feathery spikes swaying in the wind create a natural, airy movement that is very decorative — a grass that lives and moves.
- In containers on terraces: its compact rounded habit makes it an excellent container plant — decorative from July to November with its spikes and autumn foliage.
- In borders: plant several clumps in a bed for a natural, contemporary meadow effect.
- In compositions: combine it with a Festuca glauca 'Azura Blue' — the silvery blue of Festuca and the bright green of Pennisetum complement each other perfectly.
Keep the dried spikes all winter — frosted in the morning, they create a very poetic winter plant display. Find more grasses in our balcony and terrace plant selection.
Verdeia Tips
- Prune in March — cut the clump down to one-third of its height before new growth starts. This is the only truly essential step to keep the plant vigorous and well-shaped.
- Leave the spikes in winter — do not prune in autumn. The dry stems protect the plant’s crown and remain decorative until spring.
- Divide every 3-4 years — like all clumping grasses, Pennisetum tends to thin out in the center over time. Divide in spring to rejuvenate the plant. See our propagation guide for how to do it properly.
- 🐾 Non-toxic — Pennisetum is completely safe for dogs and cats.
